Bucky laughed easily at Shuri's reply. He knew as well as any of them where the name had come from, and he knew that some still automatically referred to him with it. As the loner. The old grizzled beast that had stood on the outside of the pack for too long. He didn't feel that way anymore.

Hell. If he wasn't so attached to maintaining Steve's legacy, he might try and trade in the America in his name for Wakanda. It was his home now. But Steve would always be his best pal, and he wasn't going to let the man's work go to waste.

He smirked at Shuri. "I was thinking Bucky or James." He offered, certain that it went without saying. Still, better to be quite confident she had the idea, rather than somewhat so.

"Your faith in me is inspiring." He replied, sarcasm evident in his tone in regards to her warning.

Though his composure was entirely lost when she started fiddling with his hand. Her comment didn't help in the slightest. He was trying to force words out when she looked up to meet his gaze- and Bucky was lost.

Even he could track the blush on her skin when he was already looking at her with such focus. It took a force of will to stop himself from reaching out and tracing the edges of the warmed skin to find out where it stopped. To examine the physical display of her embarrassment- and hopefully spread it much further. His breath caught in his throat when she licked her lips.

Bucky wanted to say screw the rules and steal her mouth then and there. Make it perfectly clear to her what she did to him when she looked like that. He bit his own lip slightly, eyes focused on her soft mouth. What they would feel like- Hell. Bucky was completely and utterly under this woman's spell.

Giving in, he moved his hand to reach for her- which he had forgotten was still in her hand. Taking advantage of that, he linked his fingers with her, pressing a kiss to the captive digits. Leaning forward ever so slightly, Bucky paused.

A whole mess of thoughts were going through his head- but all of them revolved around the woman who sat in front of him. How much trouble this could cause. How unlikely it was that she returned even a mite of his emotions. How awful a person he was for wanting to kiss her until that innocent look was replaced with need-

Oh Damn it all. Bucky was already going to hell, he may as well enjoy it.

He leaned forward into her space, resting against the table so he had less distance to bend. Raising his free hand to lightly stroke her cheek, daring to ghost his thumb over her bottom lip. "Shuri. I would like to kiss you." Bucky managed, though his voice came out so deep that it could have been a growl if there had been anything but soft emotion in the words. He took a slow breath before going for broke.

"May I?"

“Jim? Jimmy? Jimmy-bean?” she shot back, half dancing down the hallway, arms clasped behind her back playfully.

So to be very brutally honest; Shuri was not at all experienced in this, any of this. Boy’s girls’s any of it. Let's be real here her Brother, Father and yup mom too kept her fairly sheltered, and her own personal focus on her education and living up to the responsibility and trust her King had placed in her left no time for anything recreational. Thank god she loved her work and it was more fun and engaging as anything else she had experienced.

She was young, but Shuri was born and raised into that title he insisted in using; she was a Princess. And even if she had never felt the urge to challenge her brother for the throne, she had been educated right beside him, they had the same lessons in diplomacy, the war had only brought into sharp focus that full honesty was not always the best option.

“I think Sargent Barnes” Shuri shifted away from his touch, pushing down the half achey, half nervous, half almost fearful reaction that it aroused in her. “That it is time to eat.” Shuri thanked the fact that she was already sitting, or that deep near growl that made her knees go jelly would have probably been way more obvious.

The probe disconnecting made a sharp click joining the other tools she kept on her “I will add the controls to your beads.” Shuri smiled at him, trying to recover the playfulness she shared with everyone, and knowing that it would be impossible.

Things had changed.

And she didn’t think it was going go back to the way it had been.

Hell. Hell hell hell hell hell. And a whole slew of other curses that Bucky was sure Steve would disapprove of him using. He had known this might happen. He had even considered it the most likely possibility. He thought he had been prepared. And absolutely none of that explained the sour feeling in the pit of his stomach as Shu- Princess Shuri backed away from him.

For a brief second his hands hung awkwardly in the air, his lips parted ever so slightly to ask for an explanation. But- Bucky was capable of reading someone's actions. He didn't need to have her put into words the disgust she felt at his touch. His face slid halfway into the charming Captain America face he kept for the public- before that failed and he settled on the quiet withdrawn mask of the winter soldier.

He tried to frame it better. For one thing, nothing ventured nothing gained. She didn't want him- and now he knew that for certain, he didn't have to question anymore. Maybe he'd feel less ridiculous hope every time she looked at him like more than a wounded animal. She was kind enough to not change how she treated him. Even the relatively icy word Sergeant was- in character. She would still allow him her company. Her absolutely torturous company that at the moment was nothing but a fresh stab wound.

But oh how much easier it would be if she had thrown a fit. If she had been angry. If she had screamed at him for betraying her trust. Maybe- not necessarily, but maybe- Bucky could have liked her a little less. It could feel less like she had slit open one of his veins and then sat down beside him like he wasn't bleeding out. He could feel less like he'd be okay with that just to have her there.

He cleared his throat, taking a step to the side and then backing away. "Yes. Of course Princess." He replied quietly, taking his seat instead of running off a cliff like he would maybe like to.

He nodded slightly when she offered to put the program in his beads- even as he filled his plate efficiently. "Thank you Princess." He added before digging in without hesitation or reservation. It wasn't like he could be more rude than he already had been. He had walked into her quarters and then tried to coerce her into an act that she had no desires for. There wasn't much that could be done to top that.

Bucky wanted to open his mouth- say it was a joke. Say that he used to be funnier- but he didn't hit the mark very often anymore. Be charming and amusing, and make her smile something more real than the fragile one she had pasted on at the moment.

But the words wouldn't come out of his mouth. Partially he was afraid she'd hate him more- but he also... Didn't want to. He wanted her to know that every compliment he had paid her, every dark look she had gotten, every reluctant smile- and later quick and willing laughter- that there was something real to his feelings.

So help him, Bucky was a bad person- because he wanted her to be tormented with the knowledge of his affections the way they tormented him.

But... Even if he didn't deny it, it wasn't fair to the Princess to do that. She didn't deserve to feel bad for the simple act of not seeing him how he saw her. So he gave a small grin at her. He wouldn't lie. He wouldn't say that in that moment he wasn't absolutely desperate for her, and willing to throw away his home- if T'challa found out- just to be able to kiss her once. He wouldn't say that the idea of even one memory of her lips was worth nothing- that he wouldn't have held on to it for as long as memory remained his.

But he could act like nothing happened. He had practice doing that. First, acting like he hadn't made out with guys behind his mom's back. Later acting like he wasn't jealous of his best friend. Acting like he wasn't a wanted felon who deserved to die. Acting like he wouldn't give his own life to bring Steve Rogers back without hesitation.

He finished his food in silence. He felt bad about that, but he needed to have more than a few minutes to collect himself and get his brain together. Emptying the plate before the Princess could do much more than start- Bucky stood up abruptly.

"Sorry, didn't realize what time it is. Promised to call Natasha to update her on the Portal. But I am serious about being around if you need some heavy lifting." He gave a small laugh, hoping it was less empty than he felt. "What else is the guy attached to your arm good for?" He added with a cheesy wink, backing away before walking calmly out the door with a wave behind him. Which once shut, he dropped the smile. He let his shoulders sink under the weight of his own idiocy. Then he started running. He stopped only long enough to shuck his gear before running out of the building as fast and as far as his legs would carry him.
