The door opened with a soft click, the sound nearly inaudible to human ears, but he hears it. He looked every bit as hale and hearty as ever; a god in his prime, immortal and every young with a beauty to match. And yet, he pulled his aura close to him, his eyes distant as he moved. The god was exhausted; he always was when he came back from the world he’d just visited. There, he was alone, a lone god to a universe full of people. People who cried out in his name for everything from a good harvest to political success to entire wars won in his name.

Seth had never wished for violence to be done in his name, not by his worshippers, his faithful. His priests knew that, preached a reverence for all life, and yet there were droves of men and women alike who felt that it was against some unspoken rule for people to choose not to pray to him.

Sighing, the god leaned back against the door for a moment, eyes closing as he took a moment to try to release the tension. Failing, he strode to the balcony, his form shifting as he took wing and flew over the sky of the Hub, letting the dusking sun warm his small body even as he flew upwards before dipping back down, alighting on a bench, the soft feathers of the owl fluffing out and back down where they belonged.

It was so much quieter here where no one called out his name for their wars or lives or crops. He could never simply walk away from his responsibilities, but here, at least, he could have a reprieve from them.

The feeling of her mate unsteady, unsettled, discontent in his being should not in a fairer universe be as common as it was. But than who better than Gods knew of the inherent unfairness of the universe.

A henna covered hand rose, stroking over his feathers, a gentle familiar touch. Adhira shifted on the bench, the long curl of her tail visible peeking out from the folds of her sari.

She felt his exhaustion and did what she could to soothe it.

There were no fair universes. Some were easier than others, some were kinder, but none were fair.

He hadn’t actually come here seeking his mate, looking for comfort, but neither did he shy away from her touch and comfort. Large dark eyes that spoke of the night sky closed slowly, the owl making a soft sound.

It’s always war with them. Unnecessary war. Sometimes I wish I could just reach out and take the idea away from them, snatch it from their thoughts permanently. His voice was a whisper, less spoken, even in her mind as much sighed through his aura against hers.

He hadn’t been meant to rule alone. He didn’t enjoy it, would much prefer her or one of their children, or both of their children, at his side… But to do so would be to invite the same travesties that they had befallen in the past to be revisited and he had no interest in that.

He had never been mean to rule, much less alone.

Seth was so much closer to the nature he had been created as; while she...she had become what was needed, what she needed to be.

Adhira could rule alone, ruthless and cold as humans demanded of their multifaced Gods. And Seth rebelled against that same aspect.

Adhira slipped her fingers over his breastbone, stroking the feathers there, “We’ve known this since the beginning, it was humans who stole our child’s sweetness to twist into the God they demanded for their punishment.” It was a cold comfort she offered. But her presence still reached for him.

She could think he’d never been meant to rule, but it should have been him, by all rights, to rule over half of Egypt, to care for the people there. Instead, it had gone to his brother, not due to any wrongdoing of his own, but because of nepotism. And while it had angered him, Seth had quietly done what he could. He had fulfilled his roles with honor and dignity until his nephew’s pride and greed had lead to the destruction of his priesthood. She wasn’t wrong that he hadn’t changed as much as she had, though. He was still the god he had been born as, though he took on his original form less often now than he had in the past. People found the Sha frightening, but then, it was a predator, and humanity was vulnerable to such creatures.

Where Adhira’s original domains had been filled with warmth and gentleness, Seth had been born into a domain that was by default cold and inexorable. Humanity looked at death and saw evilness and cruelty, but that was an illusion. Seth had never wanted to be frightening or impassive, thus he fought against being so harder than Adhira might.

The reminder was almost cruel. The bird shuddered, caught between enjoying the caress and shrinking away from the statement his mate made. Still, he didn’t shy away from her. “How thoughtful of you to remind me.” The words were spoken this time, coming from the owl, though the voice was the same she’d known for millennia. “There are times when I hate them.”

The death of their first child, the corruption of her beloved second...it had twisted her; Adhira blamed herself for not seeing the changes for what they truly were, the same corruption that took their son had slipped into her. Made her all to willing to be ‘evil’. If humans wished a god of punishment, a god of war and pain...she had filled those aspects with the grief filled vengeance of a mother wronged.

Seth hated Ruda for killing their son. Adhira had hated her self for letting her babies fall, betraying the core nature of ‘mother’. After that...there had been hardly any choice but to embrace the shift in her nature that had started with her sons traumatic birth.

Green slitted eyes turned to meet his, she did not need to respond; the millennium had dulled the pain, the memories, but the scars lingered, and his presence with their children only served to deepen the ache. “I think I always hate them.” Her voice was sillibant around fangs and forked tounge.

Their sons had been loved. Kayin by his father, the humans who had watched him grow, and the masses of humans who had adored the godling from his birth. Rudra had been loved by his parents, his brother, and the humans that had been closest to his parents. But their second son had grown twisted over time.

Seth blamed Rudra for killing Kayin, yes. But what tore the death god apart was the fact that he hadn’t stopped loving either of his sons. He grieved for his murdered child, and he grieved for the son that had been taken from him in a different way. A god of death and the dead, able to visit any of the souls within his kingdoms, Seth would never see either of those sons again. It was a fact he still lamented untold eons later.

To always hate… Sadness crept over him. Once upon a time, long, long ago in a universe that he had to force himself to remember the location of, she had been the voice of reason between them. It had been so long since that little island in the middle of the sea that it was easy to misplace the memory, to forget that this was not always how his beloved mate had been. The owl’s head cocked to the side, dark eyes opening to watch her, “All of them?”

The face that had never been human no matter how close she had drifted elongated, shifted, scales slipping down her form, leaving a sunset green hued constrictor speaking to and owl about the pain of loss, and the cold hate of a mothers heart - “yes all of them. I became Vengeance-“ so so long ago, that first broadcast where her skin showed finger prints - “A woman’s hate for injustice forced.” The snake rose its head, staring at the Owl - “How can I ever forgive for what they did to our babies?” Snakes could not cry, there was only the endless void of grief.

A mortal passing by would likely think it an odd sight; a bird and a snake, sharing a bench peacefully, but any who could see deeper would understand there was more than just two animals present.

She had become a goddess of vengeance for women eons ago, but Seth remembered when it had happened. He remembered his own rage at the realization of what was being done to her. She was his beloved, his mate, even if she’d left him back then for a time, it hadn’t changed that fact. Hurt, angry, anguished, he had never stopped loving her. “There are those whose hearts hold no evil, my love. What of them? What of the mothers whose children were also taken from them, who grieve as have?”

He couldn’t, not for all of his rage, his grief, or his pain, hate all of them all of the time. There were those who were innocent, after all. And it were those souls that drew him away from his hatred. “Is there none who you would find innocent?”

Scaled lips drew back; a passerby might wonder if the snake had at last decided to take its so sweetly offered meal - “shall we War again?” The simple words belayed a history of violence that left worlds ruined across the eons.

Adhira and Seth; they were circular, when one would rise into ‘maddness’ the other would gather their forces to battle. Sometimes it was Adhira protecting the children he wished to cull for disobedience, sometimes it was Seth bringing order to her Chaos.

In the end the reasons hardly mattered; the Gods made war with the same ferocity they loved. And Seth and Adhira’s Love has burned stars from the sky’s across the multiverses.

The show of fangs and the threat made so subtly in her body language as well as her words earned a long, quiet look from the owl, seemingly unperturbed by the snake’s ferocity. Finally, after moments that drew out into one another, he asked evenly, “Ready to do battle so soon, my love?” There was no threat in his tone, but there was no soft ache there, either. If she wished to war, then there was nothing for it but to war. There was acceptance, cool and calm, but there was also a touch of unhappiness that felt almost like regret in the god as well. ”Over a simple question?”

The bird shifted, its feathers puffing and then resettling in a better order. They rounded each other, but it usually took longer than a few months for one of them to slide into unease and eventually feel the need to save the other, or save worlds from the other. It was a rare event that a conversation turned to threats. And while Adhira might be ready to throw down the gauntlet and go to war, Seth found that he would rather, at least for now, keep his peace.

“Our children seem to care for them. Not just one or two, but in general.” The eyes that should be sightless looked up at the sky, considering, “Their mother raised them rather well. They are both beautiful.”

In temples across universe's, Oracles woke to building terror, Priests and Diviners stares at the omens before them and felt dread.

Was she ready to War? Yes. But rarely was it one incident that started an instant battle; it was a slow slide. A frown from Seth, a ruthless cull by her. A lover struck down.

The Snake became Goddess, and Goddess tugged at reality, time, slipping through the universe's taking Him with her.

Heels clacked on pavement, long heavy settles in the fog curling around their ankles. Thick coyling scents of coal and woodfire along with the buildings before them told of a city a world just taking the first steps towards industrialization.

A world also with out Gods.

Adhira turned to him, hair pinned up under a smart velvet hat pinned at a jaunty angle - “we need a lifetime.” Jade eyes almost sad. “Just...us.” And he would understand she meant to diminish them, remove the knowledge of who and what they were, give them or this aspect of them a chance at finding each other once more.

The priests of Seth slept soundly in their beds. He would go to war if she began it, yes, but until she did so, those who worshipped him continued to find their peace. He was a god of quick passion and firm dogma, but he was also a god of order and balance. He had no love for their warring cycles, but he understood it and more than played his part.

Even as she pulled the hazel eyed man into another world, one where their power dwindled, the owl spread its wings and beat them into the sky, spiralling slowly upward.

Seth offered his wife a smile and his arm, his free hand smoothing the lapels of his jacket, “Then let us take a lifetime together.” He sounded...almost eager. “What adventures will await us this time around, do you think? It’s never really dull, not when we can spend the years together.”

A life.

Lips curled at his eager agreement - “No it’s never dull is it?” Her hands lifted to his head - “What shall we become here?” Someway they would find each other- it was inevitable, they were they tide and shore, parted for a time but always rushing back.

But she wouldn’t make it simple for them, it shouldn’t be, “Lords? Too easy. “ there were parts of her that could never be erased, parts of him that would remain no matter how buried. She was almost tempted to make a soldier; war still on her mind. In this world or at least this nation woman served in their own corps, and Adhira felt her blood warm at the thought.

...but no.

This was to avoid war.

The trust that he handed their future over to her, put the Goddess and woman at ease, the gentle acceptance of her mate gave her the ease to smile without any hint of sadness. They needed this; she hoped they found each other once again.

A world without gods but not a world without the supernatural, if nothing so great as the world they had once been born into; Adhira took her powers, her godhood, nearly everything that made her more than human and locked it away, she left Him with the choice of how much to give up, she would not rip his godhood away with her own hands; the face she chose for him, and her were new to them both, they would not even have a hint of buried familiarity to fall back on to find and love another once again.

Celeste Smith woke as she did every morning to the sound of her household slowly stirring as well; a bright green eyed creature her beauty was only marred by a long twisting scar running from under her left ear, disappearing into the practical coiffure she pinned her dark hair into. One of the few practicing female doctors in London she accepted the cup of tea her maid brought her with a smile of thanks. Her household was small, only four people including herself, and only the bequeathment from her mother had afforded her the luxury of buying it even in the less desirable section of London near the theaters. But that suited her; Celeste when she was not keeping her admittance permissions active with London Gernal by taking bi weekly rounds, she kept a neat little practice catering discreetly to the ladies of the theater, those fallen birds that so many of her colleagues declined to treat.

This morning far too early for her mind, she was by nature a night owl, and facing waking the wrong side of dawn sat poorly with her, yet needs must, and as the most junior doctors she was forced to take the least desirable shifts or be left with out, and with her own practice so new (a discrete plaque at the door only stated Dr. C. Smith) and she would require the operation theaters at the hospital Celeste must as needful take on these horrible shifts.

Although…

Celeste could not help but smile as she lifted the baby who had decided to come into this world bottom first to his exhausted mothers breast, several hours later, how could she feel anything but grateful that it was she and not some other who might care less for mother and child?

He knew that she would wipe their slate clean. That he would forget her, forget his goodhood, forget their children and histories.

Honestly, he couldn’t be happier about that last bit. He knew there would be chunks missing from this part of him, that this aspect would miss those things, but he wouldn’t remember what he was missing, he would simply move forward without all of that baggage, without the forlorn ache of his dead son, without the knowledge of his failures with their second son, without the yearning for a home he could never return to.

He could, perhaps, be happy in this little godless world.

—————

He was late. Forever late for everything, but it was worse today…. Today was his presentation; a full quarter of his grade. Today, Hannibal wore a suit and tie, ties neatly under his chin, his hair, for once, combed and tamed into neatness.

He hustled through the streets, slipping fearlessly, or perhaps thoughtlessly, between the others that crowded the streets, headless of the traffic, pedestian and otherwise.

The slender man’s eyes almost never left his watch as he weaved carelessly between people, unerringly avoiding everyone until he suddenly…. Missed. “Oh, pardon me, terribly sorry for that.”

It was too early, or too late, either way it was all she could do not to sigh descending from the horse drawn streetcar - Only to be bowled over before her back foot touched the pavement. The thick coffiture of her hair, and the wide brim of her hat were the only things that kept her skull from a concussion inducing impact with the filthy side walk.

Celeste blinked, the world was...sideways, it was taking her too long to figure out what had happened, why she was laying watching her hand spasm towards her dropped umbrella. Moving from prone in corsets, skirts, and dazed was not quickly done. A hand raised to her head, bitting her lip from the small whimper as lightening crashed through it, her hand bag dangled from its thin chain from her wrist.

When he saw who he had bumped into, Hannibal’s face fell. A lady. And she was a lovely lady at that…. “Oh, I am very sorry. Are you hurt? Please, don’t be injured…” From another man, the words might be selfish or cold, but spoken as they were, there was warmth, concern, and compassion in them. He didn’t want to have hurt the poor lady.

“Let me help, please, miss.” He might sound and hold himself apologetically, appearing unsure, but the hands that moved to politely assist her to stand, supporting her deftly with a gentleness that might be rather surprising. Hannibal was, after all, a gentleman.

Seeing her reach for her head, Hannibal tipped head slightly, glancing to make sure she hadn’t cracked it against the pavement too hard or at a bad angle. “How do you feel? Dizzy? Well enough to walk? I have a flat just down the street…. There’s a lobby there. Perhaps a few moments to sit and recover might do you well?”

Her habit of wearing rather stern walking costumes was done with brutal practicality; there was still enough pushback against women without adding the charge of ‘frivolity’ by wearing the bright colors that naturally called to her. Plus it was economical.

Her parents had left her just enough to buy the modest brownstone and just manage to pay the servants that had been with her, her whole life a wage, but until her practice gained steady clients Celeste was keeping a misers grip on her pennies. Hence the street car and not a hansom cab even on this steamingly hot day.

The offer to rest at his apartment rang alarm bells even in her vaguely addled mind - “Just to the lobby-” Oh. She blinked twice, he did have rather lovely eyes didn’t he? Another blink and the stray thought was banished, her hand came down drawing attention to the thick scar curling under her left ear and into her coiffure. “Thank you.” she brushed ineffectual at the mud now liberally smeared up the side of her skirts, normally the rain would have been a godsend to beat back some of the summer heat, but all it had done was raise the temperature by making it nearly impossible to breathe through it.

Honestly she would have rather gone right home, slipped into a cool bath and napped till the evening when her ladies would begin to appear before their shows as ailments became known, but in all honesty she wasn’t certain of her ability to remain steady that long of a distance.

“You were rushing somewhere…” every time she shook her head against the lingering dizziness it just made it throb worse. “I don’t want to keep you.” she murmured as he escorted her.

She was the lucky one of them. Perhaps Seth hadn’t wanted family again, or maybe he didn’t feel he deserved an easier life this time around, but Hannibal was alone in the world, working and attending his classes, forever living in the in-between world of a student working his way through his life.

The invitation hadn’t been to his apartment, not really, but to the cozy lobby where the doorman would be. “Of course. It will have a seat, and I can fetch you some water.” He offered her a small smile, still apologetic. “Easy.” He didn’t have much, which was why he was walking in this weather, but he wasn’t entirely poor, either. “Please, here,” he offered her his arm to lean on so she wouldn’t fall.

“Oh. Yes, I was..” He was already dreadfully late. “I’ll get one of the boys in my building run down and ask to reschedule. It’s no problem. This,” he indicated her fall and current situation, “Is entirely my fault. I’d rather make it right.”
