What the hell did normals do at times like this?

It made Jake furious that he didn’t know if he could do this for Kai. He wanted to do this, but he was terrified he didn’t know how. However he was determined to do it… he just hoped he could manage it, because he didn’t want to let Kai down. Why? Well… he was just chalking that up to sheer stubborn determination, because that was all he had.

Oh, and speaking of that…

Jake reached into the sub-dimensional pocket that held his lantern, pulling it out and re-charging his ring before he did anything else. He had a working theory that the green ring provided a sort of buffer to the more… influencing colors of the spectrum that the white ring gave him access to. So far, it seemed to work, so he made sure his ring was always topped off before heading out into any trying situation… like tonight.

Where he was going on a normal date.

Kai wanted to try a real relationship, and he was quite honestly down for that, but it left him with so many damn questions, like what did you do on a date that wasn’t just a booty call or an effort to get into someone’s pants? He wasn’t going to be dumb and try to watch romantic comedies or sitcoms or anything for ideas, but… damned if he knew if he was doing this right. For one thing, it was hard to pick someone up for a date in the Hub, where people’s addresses could be… well, fluid. He didn’t know if showing up in a sports car made of green light counted as ‘doing it right,’ but that’s exactly how he pulled up to Kai’s current address after making reservations at the Hub’s most fancy, upscale restaurant (which he was going to have to blow two months credits to pay for, but oh well).

“So… ah… hi,” he said when she came out, feeling his face turn red. Easy, tiger. You can do this. You’ve faced down a goddamn Superman, you can do this. “I… ah… got us reservations,” he added lamely. “The place is supposed to be fantastic, I hope you like it.”

Kai had absolutely no idea how human dates worked. Not as a statement of her inhumanity but mostly as a statement that she had no practical experience with them. Certainly she had read a book or two with romance in them, it was hard to avoid that, but she hasn't paid much attention! It wasn't like she had expected her life to go this way, for her to find a guy who she wanted to have a true emotional connection with.

So to say Kai was a little anxious was an understatement. Her sister would probably add on that it was a massive understatement, seeing as Kai had dragged Diane over to help her go through literally everything she owned in the hopes of finding something 'date appropriate.' Because leather jackets didn't exactly scream dinner date- and Kai didn't really own many fancy clothes. They were incredibly difficult to fight in, so she hasn't bothered bringing any.

She did have a copy of the dress she had worn to the last big party she went to- but considering it had been not Jake who took her to bed that night... despite Jake being there... well it seemed like a poor choice.

Kai hadn't put this much thought into her clothes in years.

Finally her sister just went out and came back with a dress that she more or less forced on to Kai. And heels- there were no good reasons for heels. Absolutely none. Make up was still in her wheelhouse, but stars she was grateful for her ring. Kai thought that she might not even be able to convince herself to wear this flimsy thing if she wasn't able to exchange it for a protective uniform at any moment in time.

She was waiting facing the door when Jake drove up- she did appreciate the green sports car- but she was maybe a little eager in her answering of the door. She smiled as well as she could for how awkward she felt.

"Hey." She replied automatically, stepping out and closing the door. She self consciously smoothed the front of her dress, trying to keep from curling her shoulders in. "Um. Nice car. Uh. Clever. We won't need to find parking." She offered lamely, trailing off as she finished her thought. "I'm sure the place will be nice. Um. Also you look nice."

Kai nearly ran to her seat in the car as she tried to hide the red that was burning her cheeks. Could she be any worse at this?! Because she was rather feeling like the answer was no. And she couldn't even come up with a better word than 'Nice.' She was going to be screaming at herself later.

Wow, she looked great. Granted, she always looked great. It made Jake wonder for a moment if he was dressed well enough for the situation. Well, all right, he knew that he was dressed up as well as he could be, but that was little consolation when you were escorting an island goddess… or at least, that’s how he always felt when he was around her: Just a clumsy, brute of a man next to her.

And maybe he should stop thinking in circles? Yeah, that would be awesome.

He looked back at the green sports car and immediately felt that it had been a much better idea in his head than in execution. They were both Lanterns. Why the hell did they need cars? This was just him hot-shotting for her, and it was stupid, and… “Yeah, it… it made sense… I thought…” Abruptly, he shut up, not sure what else he was supposed to say. What had he thought? He probably hadn’t thought, not much at least. Yeah, Lantern business was impressive, sure, but not really to other lanterns, not unless you could do something crazy, which this definitely wasn’t.

God damn it.

He sat down in the car, which did, naturally, rev up just like a real one as he pulled out down the street. He’d already made it, no sense in not using it now, right? They headed down the street, Jake’s eyes fixed on the road, looking for something to say as much as looking for his next turn. “So… um… your sister’s settled in all right?” It was, he figured, a legitimate question, considering how often he dragged her off somewhere to do something dangerous. Also, it was something to say, which was better than saying nothing, which was the only other thing he could think of just then.

The very idea that Kai was an island goddess would have sent her into wild laughter. She was barely holding together on the best of days- she was not even remotely worthy of worship. All that being said, and it became so much more impressive that when he looked at her like that- she kind of did feel like an island goddess. Something to do with having a guy like that looking at her like that.

Tldr Jake was incredibly handsome. If she had known that he was questioning his outfit she would have laughed- herself being so worried that her outfit was too formal.

She settled into the car, not even questioning the green sports car. Perhaps it was unimpressive to other trained lanterns- but Kai was still learning. And honestly even if she was trained? She had spent so much time cuddling up to him in his various constructs that it was perfectly normal and kind of nice to be in one again.

Kai would have been happy to turn to him and express that, Maybe delaying their trip by quite a while- until he went and mentioned his sister. Kai was fairly simple. If her blood was pumping, and adrenaline was in her veins- then it didn't matter too much what the circumstances were. Otherwise? She was freaky but the mention of her kid sister was still distinctly not arousing.

Pursing her lips for a second, she sighed and smiled instead of pouting. This was good, she had to remind herself, he wanted to know about the people she cared about. A very dately thing to do. "She's settled in fairly well. A friend is teaching her magic which is a little terrifying but she's having fun which is the important bit." Kai spoke the last few words with enthusiasm- that blinked out of existence the moment she realized she didn't have anything else to ask.

She tapped her fingers lightly on her thigh as she thought. Finally she went with the first thing she could think of, even though it was a patently awful question. "How's unlocking your white ring going? What's your favourite colour so far?"

Her question, asked innocently, had about as much of an effect on him as his asking about her sister had on her libido. No, he wasn’t trying to dodge the question, but was this something he’d been ready to just volunteer? Oh, hell no. “It’s… going all right,” he allowed, considering his answer carefully. “The other lights… they’re… hard.” He was ready to say that he didn’t think that the white ring had been really meant for him, but that thought died in his head because he knew it was a lie. Once he unlocked a new color, it was there for him, as much as he wanted. The only real question was whether or not he wanted to want them. “I think indigo is the most comfortable one to use. Blue, I’m still getting the hang of. Red and yellow… well, you kind of saw those.” And, unfortunately, she also got to see that he could use them to devastating effect. He could do it and he could enjoy it, which was, to say the least, disconcerting to him. “I still haven’t managed orange yet, though, or violet, so it’s still not at full power. I’m not going to even pretend to know what any of that means.” And that much, at least, was true, though not true the same way all around. He knew why he couldn’t use the orange light yet: He just couldn’t let himself go to greed like that, in part because he knew what a monster Larfleez was and didn’t want to be like that. He didn’t know, though, what exactly he was missing out on by doing that. He had no idea, though, why he couldn’t use violet or what he was missing out on, and he didn’t know where to start with what it meant that this ring wasn’t giving him the full range of the spectrum. Unlike the Guardians, he couldn’t really see how it might be important to have the full range of all seven corps.

Not wanting to really deal with this line of thought, he reached over and squeezed her hand, hoping (possibly in vain) that more wouldn’t be asked on the subject. Why, exactly, did people date? This was unnecessarily complicated.

“Here we are,” he said, stopping the car outside a tall building that was all curves and spiralling platforms. The whole thing was open air, and the higher platforms (which is, of course, what he had reserved) had an unnaturally clear view of the ever-changing night sky of the Hub. Jake got out, hurrying around to open Kai’s door (since that was apparently what you were supposed to do on a date), and then let the car evaporate into motes of emerald light again. More than a little nervously, Jake swallowed and headed into the building, taking a moment to debate whether or not he should hold her hand before finally (and awkwardly) taking it, only to have to let go again to open the door for her. Oh my god I suck at this...

Kai nodded along with his words, not entirely certain what kind of response she had been hoping for from him. Perhaps something along the lines of how violet was- on account of the skimpy outfit it put her in? But then maybe he was trying not to objectify her. Which was unfortunate seeing as she had the distinct feeling that they would both be less uncomfortable if this were a purely physical affair.

Idly she twisted her own ring slightly, still curious about the violet energy it offered her. "I have started taking sort of... lessons. In how to use the violet ring to it's maximum power." Which was sort of the reason she had asked him out properly after everything. Kai had too many questions about what that would mean if things went poorly- if her heart was broken, would she be unable to use the ring any longer? Would it find a new host?

She didn't even want to think about the pain she would be in personally. Yet, Kai's small green sliver had been growing slowly and steadily, so she assumed it couldn't be as easy as one bad date... Right?

She did smile at him brightly when he squeezed her hand, taking the movement as prompting to twine her fingers with his so that he couldn't escape too easily.

Before he let go of it. And then took it. Then let go of it again. It was almost comforting how awkward that was- meant that she wasn't the only one at least a little out of her depth. Or, well she assumed. For all Kai knew, he could just be ambivalent on her and not wanting to unnecessarily lead her on- which would be dumb if he was taking her on a date. He wasn't that kind of guy.

But maybe her awkward was rubbing off, and even though he was likely used to wining and dining all kinds of women, he didn't know what to do with her- it being her first proper date of all time after all. She reached for the door at the same time he did, before stepping to the side at the last second because damn of course he would try and open the door, what was she doing?!

Walking in, she hesitated before reaching for his hand again. "It's very lovely here." Kai mumbled finally, not knowing what else to say.

Stars above, she hoped the food was good so that she'd have something to at least talk about.

He wasn’t really sure what to make of her comment about the violet light, or more to the point he just couldn’t make up his mind about how he should take it. On one hand, it was reassuring that even she, who had been specifically picked by a violet ring, needed lessons. It made him feel like a bit less of a dunce. On the other hand, was he supposed to ask her for lessons? She was farther along with it than he was, obviously, but… well, he just hated letting her see him at less than his best, and with unknown shades of the emotional spectrum… well, that was practically him at his WORST. As much as she might be able to help him, he didn’t want to let her see him like that at all.

Granted, as they sat at their very expensive table with its magnificent view of the Hub, he wasn’t cutting much more of an impressive figure, was he. He had no idea what to do now. This was… well, it was practically an Earth-normal thing. He’d once been forced through an accelerated Eporlean courting ritual by a very angry father (and his eager-to-save-face daughter) and managed to pull it off flawlessly, but taking a girl he liked to dinner? He was clueless here.

“They said it was supposed to be the best place in the Hub for dinner,” he offered. Salvation came (momentarily) in the form of the waiter who came bearing a bottle of some obviously-otherworldly wine, which Jake readily said they’d love to try. He listened to the waiter go on snootily about its ‘earthiness’ and ‘full-bodiedness’ and the ‘bouquet’ that the wine had, finally trying a sip once the guy left. He got as far as almost swallowing it, then his eyes practically bugged out of his head as his tastebuds suddenly rose up in revolt. “What… what the…” Jake coughed, reaching for his water. “Oh my god, I haven’t tasted anything that sour in my life, what is that!?”

Kai smiled weakly, uncertain of what she ought to do. Should she offer to practice with him? Was that what a good girlfriend ought to do? Or.... Was it weird to offer assistance like that? She didn't want to seem like she was taking pity on him, or thought she was better than him- Stars, she was barely learning herself. She was starting to understand how to defend, but attacking was still largely beyond her. Despite all of that, she'd really like to be able to teach him, because she wants to show off, and wanted him to see that she was well worth the investment.

She wished she knew that he was out of his depth. She would have been much more at ease if she knew that she wasn't the only who was completely lost here.

Wine was a very good conversation greaser. She grabbed the glass tossing it back without hesitation. She could worry about class once she had enough liquid courage to be slightly less afraid of screwing everything up- and presumably, in the process, screw everything up.

Taking a quick look to make certain that no one else was looking at them, she grabbed the classy cloth napkin and started wiping her tongue off aggressively. "Wha te hail is tha???" She managed, around her attempts to clean her taste buds. Grabbing the water, she chugged it back just as efficiently, shuddering when it was down. "I feel like I would have enjoyed drinking vinegar more than that!" She offered, her smile growing as she threw her head back with a laugh.

Blushing slightly she leaned forward conspiratorially. "Would it be really poor form to suggest we go to a- a dive or something? I am not classy. I just want a good beer." Without even thinking, she pressed her elbows inwards, emphasizing her assets, adding a small tilt of her head.

They couldn’t think of anything to talk about. They hated the snooty wine. Everything, absolutely everything so far had been as awkward as awkward can be, and he had no idea why. Well… okay, he had one idea, didn’t he? “Oh my god, we’re terrible at this, aren’t we,” he asked, sitting back in his chair and chuckling. “I… have absolutely no idea what we’re doing here. I have literally never done this before.”

On one hand, the stupidly stubborn part of him (hallmark of a Green Lantern!) told him to not give up yet. They could do this. They could totally figure this out. There were absolute idiots that went on dates all the time, did fine with it, and had great times. How could they do it when Jake and Kai apparently couldn’t? Well… for one, they probably just went and did something they already liked. “Damn it… how big an idiot am I?” he muttered.

”Insufficient context to eval-“

“Shut up,” he muttered, giving his hand a little smack to shut the ring off. On one hand, the reservations alone had cost a month’s stipend to get. On the other hand, the way she was now sitting gave him a great view of her chest, and he knew she knew what that did for him… “You know, we’ve got bars from all over multiple worlds here, and we still don’t know who has the best beer, do we?” He tossed a few credits down on the table, covering the glasses of alcoholic vinegar they’d gotten, then stood up, a gree corona surrounding him. “Hell with it. Let’s get out of here.” He grinned and nodded at the edge of the balcony. “And let’s use the superhero exit, yeah?”

Kai gave a surprised laugh at the realization. That he was actually as dumb founded as she was. Laying her face in her hands, she fought back her laughter long enough to admit her thoughts. "Being largely aromantic, I haven't even really watched a single romance film. I have no fucking clue what we're supposed to do here." She offered with an exaggerated hand wave.

She giggled again at his ring speaking up. "I liked the idea. Even if it turns out I'm not really designed for fancy restaurants." She blushed slightly at the way his eyes traced her obvious action, pleased as hell that it had done what she intended. Her and Jake- and they really should have known this- were an earthy pair. Adventures, and beer, and sex. They had made it way more complicated than it had to be.

So what if this was traditional? Jake and Kai sure as hell weren't.

Grinning wildly, she took a few brief seconds after he stood up. She reached into her hair, pulling out the stupid barette that kept it twisted up and away from her neck. As she shook out the waves to her preferred state, she leaned over and pulled off her high heels. And then unceremoniously chucked them over the edge of the building.

With that, her nerves about the situation disappeared. This was her. And this was Jake too. No need for fancy shows of attire and money and eating stuck up food. They'd both be happier with ribs and beer so to hell with anyone who thought that wasn't the way things worked.

A quiet part of her mind thanked her lucky stars that it hadn't been just her who was fucking things up here. She did think her heart may have shattered if she had tried so hard, but hadn't been good enough, formal enough, for Jake.

Turning to face him, she walked backwards to the edge. "Let's. Catch me." She demanded before letting herself tumble over in what could be the world's most dramatic trust fall- but she knew her ring would catch her if Jake was too slow.

For a second, Jake thought she was going to chuck the dress off, too. It was ridiculous, of course, but after the hair and the shoes, it was the last not-normal-Kai thing she had on (that he’d seen yet, but the night was young), and this was an impulsive girl. Of course, jumping over the edge wasn’t what he expected either, but that kind of fit for her, now, didn’t it?

He glanced over his shoulder at the staring diners as he ran for the balcony rail too, feeling much more lighthearted about this than he would have been if he hadn’t known she could just fly if she needed or wanted to. “Tip your waiters! But not too much, they’re richer than all of you!” he called back as he dove into free fall over the edge.

Ring or not, Jake knew how to dive, and knew how to close the distance between them without ever turning on one of his rings. He settled into freefall with her, slipping his arm around her as the ground rushed up at him… eventually. This building was really tall, after all. “Nice day for a jump, huh?” he said, grinning manically at her. “So I’ve got an idea… first one to use their ring loses.” He glanced down at the drop below him, then kissed her, hard. Did she know that the rings would activate to save them without their interference? Maybe. If she did, this might be a much longer kiss…

Kai wouldn't lie and say she hadn't been tempted to tear off the dress. But then, she had nothing else to wear and she did actually want to spend time with Jake. Not just with her favourite parts of his anatomy. Though, she admittedly had a very high opinion of all of his anatomy. She giggled like crazy when he caught her, wrapping her own arms around his neck and grinning.

Adrenaline was a hell of a drug, and it was one much better suited to Kai than any other. Her heart had been in her throat all evening, choking out any hopes she had of breathing easy- but now it's hammering was a comfort and a pleasure. Feeling the beat of it against her ribs reminding her as little else did that she was alive. To hell with reality, space, and time. In this moment, Kailani Mahelona lived, and she would make her presence known.

Maybe she wouldn't change anything. Maybe she was nothing more than a shooting star in the night sky. Kai was okay with that. She would watch over her descendants in the future, but for the now, she was alive. Her grin turned wicked as she tilted her head back just out of his reach long enough to remark. "Aw but you're powerless without your ring. And I'm not." She half cooed, half yelled over the rushing air, her pohaku stretching out across her back to caress his arms while she kissed him.

Yes, she also knew the rings would keep them from danger. But that was hardly so much fun. Even without her ring, she had a chance of surviving this fall, and she never ran from a challenge. Kai would be the one who ended up dead from a game of chicken before she gave in to her fear.

Idly she wished she had waited to pull her hair free, as now it streamed around them in the wind, keeping them both from seeing the ground.

Oh holy shit, she was right. While he was used to being the big powerful Green Lantern, and she was a rookie Sapphire next to him, take off the rings and she was still a superhero, while he was a pretty splat-on-the-ground in the making. Could she survive this fall? Well… maybe. Maybe she could, even forgetting the rings. He, on the other hand, most certainly could not. The bottom line was that, while he might have figured she was going to be the one to freak out and ring up? She was perfectly fine not doing that.

Great job, Jake, great job.

All of these thoughts made him stiffen against her as he realized that there was a very real chance they were about to slam into the ground and… well, honestly he’d never actually tested the ring’s emergency fall-stopping. He knew that it worked in theory, but in all honesty…

“Shitshitshitshitshit,” he muttered, his nerve finally cracking as emerald light surrounded them and he sent them streaking up into the sky. Damn it, she’d called his bluff, and he’d had to show his hand. That was… kind of embarrassing, but what else could you do? “All right, you got me,” he admitted, grinning sheepishly as he carried her through the sky, angling toward one of the more lively parts of the Hub. “So what does the Goddess want as her prize?” he teased.

It was worth noting that while Kai was stupid strong, four times what she had been pre-awakening, she was still largely flesh and blood. It was mainly bravado carrying her down the side of the building. The fall was enough that they had reached terminal velocity, and she didn't know that someone four times stronger than your average surfer girl was going to withstand that splat.

Just because she had a better chance of it meant nothing. Kai was just wondering how long it would take Jake to figure out that Kai probably would have gone splat too.

The way he stiffened against her- and not in the fun way- Kai assumed he was too vague on the details of her power level to know if she'd go splat or not, and had just realized that he was notably more likely to do so.

Kai was plenty content to keep kissing him in the mean time. Her giggles curled up out of her chest, unable to contain her amusement when he gave in. Floating relatively peacefully in the sky, she brushed her hair out of her face. "Hm" She considered thoughtfully, her arms wrapped around his neck as she hadn't currently suited up and wasn't tapping into her own flight capabilities. "Well- as you stated... I got you, Which is more than enough prize for now. I'm sure I'll come up with something else later~" She purred, pressing a kiss against his jaw.

An act which required her to still pull herself up further, too short to reach his lips with ease from up here. Kai smirked at him, Finally suiting up- in what she had settled on for a uniform. Pants, a backless halter top- Still acceptably revealing for a star sapphire, but gratefully more comfortable. "For now, I think we should probably go find some diner or something. Race you to the nearest one?" Kai offered, tracing her fingers along his chest and taking a brief moment to appreciate how good he smelled before she pushed him away and took off flying.
