‘Always dashing’

Safi just chuckled, his ego accepting the compliment.

Chris’s easy compliance, the little smirk he could feel and hear in that single syllable...Safi’s lips curled into a open grin, this was the sassy little PA he’d cornered into a supply closet when he’d seen him walking in battered once too often.

“Ah-” he answered in turn when his time came, the odd almost caramel taste of the cake itself was overridden by the slightly almondish flavor of the...fondant. Of course fondant. His hands closed around Chris’s cheeks pulling him forward, Safi was too amused, too into the romance of it all, he pulled the other man closer, meeting him halfway to share the taste of the ridiculous cake.

He didn’t think about how this was their first kiss, or how he might maybe should have been able to see the other man to make sure he was comfortable, no instead using his skills he experty angled in, swiping his tongue against the seam of Chris’s lips.

It was the truth, nothing more, nothing less. The only difference between tonight and any other night was that Christian was finally feeling bold enough to say it, to tell Safi just how Chris viewed him.

Chris had changed, grown, since that day in the supply closet at Lexcorp. He had discovered, learned, and explored his magic. He had travelled to the end of a world, faced off against demons, met his heroes, made friends, fallen in love… Perhaps not every change in the man had been for the better, but Christian was still himself, if not quite the same.

One thing remained true, or perhaps was now more true than it had ever been: Christian loved Safi.

The magician was grinning as he fed Safi the piece of cake. It was befitting, that they both disliked fondant, and of course that would be what they would receive as a surprise dessert, but it was good. At least, Christian thought so. This wasn’t like the fondant they had back home, that much was for certain. He hadn’t known what to expect, if Safi would like it or not, but what he had definitely not expected was for Safi to hold his face, to pull him forward and kiss him. That did not, however, mean that Christian did not react to it. Long, dextrous fingers reached to hold Safi, one hand at a wrist, the other along Safi’s other arm, Chris’ grip was gentle, but firm.

Safi might not consider it, but this was their first kiss. The thought wasn’t the one that was on Christian’s mind in the moment, though. Honestly, later, when he looked back at this moment, this night, he would consider it a very good first kiss, and first date. It was certainly the best birthday he’d had in years, no offense to Belle, of course. His lips parted at the press of Safi’s tongue, just slightly; his chest ached but didn’t hurt, a flood of all the moments he had thought himself alone in his feelings rushing away from him.

Thumbs thick with old calluses swiped over barely there stubble, in the instant Chris surrendered Safi pushed forward, letting him taste just the edge of the passion laying tightly coiled. Safi pulled back slipping his hands down Chris’s arms turning their palms together. “Tasty.” he chuckled closing the dome blindly.

Their hosts were not so ill prepared that the world returned in a rush, rather light and sound filtered back to their little bubble slowly, an ocean slowly filling with the sounds of life.

Now if this was a normal date Safi would consider Chris well in the bag and planning out how quickly they could get somewhere semi-private. But this wasn’t a hook up and Chris was...more than that, so instead all Safi did was stroke his thumbs over the other mans palms, a gentle contented smile relaxing the lines of his face.

Oh.

Christian was an organized person. Tidy, yes, but more than that, he was organized. It showed at work, how everything he did was always orderly. At home, that order morphed into something warmer, different, but still organized. If you asked Christian where something was, he knew. Even living with Safi, he had brought his own brand of neat into the apartment; it wasn’t invasive or stark, it was quiet and comfortable. His mind was much the same way. Except for in moments like this.

The moment Safi pushed forward, Christian’s mind became a disorganized mess, just temporarily, while the moment pushed everything else aside. It wasn’t the first time Safi had had this effect on the magician, but it had been a long while since it had happened. “Mm.” The sound was an almost noncommittal noise that sounded more affirmative than entirely neutral. It was rare that Chris be at a loss for words, but for the moment, he had yet to find his voice again.

In the bag. All said and done, that had been so for quite a long time now. As it was, Christian was at ease, eyes slowly adjusting to the light, eyes dark as he listened to the sounds that were filtering back in to them, lips turned upward into a small, soft smile. The little mage looked more content than he had in months, hands relaxed, enjoying the contact with Safi for the moment. His voice was serene as he asked Safi, “Do you think they sell the fondant they use?” He met the soldier’s eyes, “Think of the cakes we could make…” Together, it went unsaid that Chris wanted to make the cakes together; the ones from the show they shared. It was spoken with a content casualness, with the easy expectation that they would be together to make cakes.

A smile curled at his lips, soft, indulgent, because of course the first words from his mouth had to do with cooking.

“You should be a chef like your sister.” His mobile mouth showed his fond amusement “- she needs a good pastry chef to class up her cakes.” No disrespect meant to that worthy but she kept things simple intentionally he was sure and not from lack of talent.

“Has to be less stressful than Lexcorp.” The idle joke suddenly made more sense, after all if Chris agreed….well they wouldn’t be going back would they once he finished his business.

He wanted that domestic life, more than he had once imagined seeing the wreckage of his marriage, being banished from his home.

Of course his mind went immediately to cooking; food was a central part of Christian. Not that he really overindulged, but he loved to make food and share it with the people he cared for. And cakes were something they both enjoyed.

The magician blinked at the idea of becoming a chef. Perhaps; he loved food and cooking, after all, but… “You really think I could pull it off?” Was his food so good? His cakes? He frowned slightly, “None of Belle’s food needs ‘classing up’, Safi. We both know that.” If it had been anyone else, there would have been an edge of offense or irritation, but Safi had said it, and Christian took the jab far more in stride for the speaker.

Stressful? Christian considered the statement, then shrugged, “I didn’t really mind the stress at Lexcorp, but you’re not wrong.” Safi knew things that Chris didn’t; sure, travelling back and forth could get just a bit much, remembering what he had to keep secret in one world when in the other he was entirely free to be who he was, but Christian didn’t know he would have to give one of those worlds up entirely to be with Safi. Not that it was a choice, it would never be a choice; Belle was in Hub, and Safi would be in Hub, and that made Hub Christian’s home. He went back to work, but the apartment was only home when Safi was there.

Safi might have embraced the adventurous life, but Christian had ever been the opposite; he lived very happily in domesticity. Safi hadn’t missed a meal since Chris had moved into the apartment. The little mage cooked and baked and kept the counters and fridge well stocked. And should Safi neglect a meal, Chris was there to hound him about remembering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There were nights on the couch watching YouTube or television, and he had a little place set aside for his own little hobby of creating his tiny machines, which had moved away from humanoid dolls and on to other things that tended to be sweet regardless of the form they took. Adventure had only found Christian since they had stumbled upon the Hub, and he had embraced it as thoroughly as he had embraced his magic.
