“I’m doing my best to avoid it.” Safi declared under his breath with heartfelt sincerity, “but sometimes the choices I have to make are just lesser of evils.” Safi wanted to take Tony’s advice, to spill what was truely going on behind the scenes to the younger man.

It was a shame he didn’t feel he could ruin Chris’s night and trust in fate enough that it would work out of he did.

“But What if I like it better when his creator straightens my ties for me?” Safi really really needed to work on his self control reaching for Chris’s hand that wasn’t gripping his fork, sliding two fingers along the back of it. “Jonah isn’t as-“ the band took that moment to begin the first dance, a rollicking beat that was close to big band but held a distinct hint of ‘other’. The side effect of this was downing out the end of Safi’s sentence, dragging his attention and hand away to watch with narrowed eyes the couples that moved to the floor.

“Like the food?” He asked changing the subject slightly taking a bite of is own oddly sweet spicy greens.

Chris was paying close, careful attention to Safi. He heard the comment. It made him frown, because if he were doing his best to avoid it, but choosing the lesser of evils might be his only route, then it meant that it was possible if not likely that Safi would end up having to move away. Looking at Safi, Chris asked softly, “Is that why you brought me here tonight?” Because they might not have a whole lot of chances to do things together in the future? To soften the blow of being told Safi might be moving away?

Safi would rather have Chris straighten his tie?? He didn’t even have a chance even consider trying to hide the flush that swept over his cheeks and down his neck. He was stuck on the thought that Safi wanted him to straighten his ties. He was going to say why, what Jonah wasn’t as when the band started to play and drowned him out. Chris couldn’t hear him, though he strained to. His head whipped over toward the orchestra with a glare; he needed to know what Safi had said!

The people heading to the dance floor to dance to the music distracted him for an extra moment. He knew how to dance, he enjoyed it. Now wasn’t the moment to dwell on dancing, though. He was opening his mouth to ask Safi to repeat himself when the man spoke again. The food? Safi wanted to know about the food… Chris offered Safi another smile, “Oh, it’s good. I’ve never had it before. Do you like it?”

He was quiet for a long moment as he gathered up the courage to ask Safi, but then he finally looked up, shy but hell, it was his birthday. If not today, then when? “Later, when we’re done with our dinner…” He just had to ask. “Would you like to dance?”

Safi set down his fork smiling softly at Chris, turning his hand up in invitation. “You said you were hungry.” His soft smile shifted into a eye twinkling grin. “I’ve been wanting to finish our dance.” From the night of that VPs daughter, the night of the kiss, the night bloody Belle got shot and that possible future seemed to spiral.

He hadn’t meant for Safi to stop in the middle of dinner to go dance… But while it hadn’t been his intention, he wasn’t going to say no to Safi, now when he said he wanted to dance now. Not when he brought up the only other dance they’d ever had… “I am.” Chris watched Safi, “And I’m enjoying the meal.” Still, he took the invitation, placing his hand in Safi’s, “But I’m pretty sure the food won’t go anywhere if we do this, right?” He had meant to dance after their meal, but far be it from him to complain about which they did first!

Something twisted warm but still pleasant in his stomach when he remembered that party. No, he hadn’t been happy going to it. He had been overworked, exhausted, and irritable. Why Safi had stayed at the party was anyone’s guess, but Christian was glad he had. That kiss… Short as it was, interrupted as it was, wasn’t one he had forgotten. Purposely not thought about, yes, but not forgotten. But really, it had been what Safi had done after Chris had gotten the horrible call that interrupted them that had made him really start to fall for Safi. Without the other man, Chris wasn’t sure he’d have made it through the weekend, or at least he wouldn’t have done so nearly as well as he had.

It boiled down to the fact that his life was so much better with Safi in it.

Safi wasn’t sure when Chris had shifted from odd little man, to sexy coworker, but if he was going to be honest that was what had driven him to wrangle an invitation to that stupid party, to lend a hand to the overworked Chris. His motives had been distinctly impure; he had been attracted to the other man and wanted to make a play for him.

He however was really clear on when the smaller man became more than a potential conquest/casual friend. Safi had learned long ago you either watched someone break down, care, worry, stress and felt nothing...or you dug in and care for THEM. Guess which had happened to him.

The shift from potential conquest to roommate and real friendship had been slow and steady, and Safi thought he’d been content to let that build where it would.

And than Hub.

And everything suddenly took on the urgency of war.

“Well if not this than the next course.” Once Chris made it clear he was willing to risk his salad being whisked away Safi would lead him onto the dance floor. The beat was fast, fenetic and to be honest not something he was particularly good at. But he had fun trying to copy the more experienced couples around them. And at least they weren’t alone in being a little foolish based on the giggles of self deprecation coming from a few other poor dancers.

It had started out as a crush on the beautiful new guy at work. Belle and he had found Safi’s facebook, and Chris had spent far too much time admiring the man, not just the videos he posted online for all to see, but seeing him at work, too. Two months, he had crushed, and crushed hard, on Safi, then the man had seen him hurt. He had come to the party that Chris had been dreading from the start and turned it into a pleasant evening. Chris would say that his motives weren’t entirely ‘pure’ either - he’d had a crush, and he had known that even when he had written out the invitation for Safi himself.

While Safi would say his motives had been impure, Christian would argue that had Safi been only interested in making a play for him, he wouldn’t have gotten Chris together, excused them both, taken him to the train station and then travelled all the way from Central City to Gotham on a train, protecting Christian from anyone who might so much as sit down too near him. Safi had made Christian feel well and truly safe, and still did.

Before Hub, Christian had been unwilling to press the relationship he was making with Safi. Living with the other man, he had come up with ways to know when Safi was returning with someone else, and Chris knew how to beat a hasty retreat without running into him. But then Belle had found Hub, and everything had happened all at once.

Nodding to Safi’s words, Chris waited only long enough to make sure that Safi was okay with this, that he wouldn’t think that Chris just didn’t like the food or felt obligated. “Alright then.” He followed Safi easily, taking the follow role. Thank goodness for all of those classes he’d attended with Belle! Mama Street had definitely done him plenty of favors in his youth, but this he had never thought to count among them. Swing was one of the dances that they had learned growing up, and while this wasn’t a dance he was very familiar with, he could at least keep his rhythm and pace; the steps would come later as they watched and learned and tried. Like Safi, Chris focused on trying to emulate the dances who already knew the dance, grinning at Safi as he did so, and laughing once when he very nearly stepped on the man’s toes, though he managed to correct himself in time.

It was pretty quickly clear that Chris was the more experienced partner here; grinning Safi stepped back raising his hands and voice enough to be heard by at least Chris over the band- “how about you lead?” He offered in good humor, shifting his hands to the ‘girls’ position.

He knew Chris was muscular (fuck him but he knew) yet he doubted the smaller man could manage some of the flips being shown off around them.

At least with Safi as the flipee.

More experienced perhaps, yes, but he wasn’t familiar with the music or the dance. Still, he was doing okay. Safi’s offer for him to lead took him by surprise, it hadn’t even occurred to him that Safi wouldn’t want to lead, he was the taller anyway, it made more sense, but Chris just grinned widely back, adjusting to take the lead role. “Sure if you don’t want to.”

Chris was muscular, he refused to let himself grow fat. Muscle could take more punishment than softer tissues could. He was no less muscular now than he’d ever been, perhaps a bit more than when Safi had first cornered him in that supply closet. He had lost even more of his body fat since returning from rescuing Belle (only to have her go off again), leaving him leaner. Strong as he might be, he wasn’t even going to try to do any flips with Safi. With Belle, he might have if she wanted to do them, but flipping his sister was a far cry from trying to do the same thing with Safi. Instead he stuck to quick legwork and spins, using their momentum to thrust Safi outward before pulling him back, stepping in to meet in the middle and redirect that same momentum into the next step. He leaned in close to speak into Safi’s ear to be heard, “Did you want to wait for a different sort of dance?” He didn’t mind the fast dances, but it didn’t seem to be Safi’s comfort zone, and this was only fun if Safi enjoyed it, too.

If the grin wasn’t enough clue that Safi was enjoying himself than way he took Chris’s lead should have been. The easy was Chris did lead relaxed something deep in Safi’s chest, he’d been the strong one, the soldier, shoulder for the people around him, needing to wear constant masks for months. He wasn’t happy, hadn’t been since his old CO had had his little sit down with him on a deserted Gotham bench while Chris helped Belle pack her things for Hub. Safi had been tasked with bringing takeout, since even that pair of over cooking achievers had determined that moving day was pizza day. They had jokingly pushed him out the door while they sorted Belle's Bedroom, since he didn’t ‘trust them not to get mugged in the middle of the day right?’ Belle’s saucy little smirk might have been dimmed with too recent grief but he knew a command when he heard it.

That conversation had been the shift, the moment when he’d chosen to hide to put on a mask, to save the man he’d grown to care for.

“Na i like it when you lead.” The words were accompanied by a wink..that hid how deeply he truly meant them.

Seeing Safi grin and relax as he took the lead only strengthened Christian’s own ease with it. It was easier to lead when you knew that it was welcomed than it was if you weren’t sure. Oddly enough, even though Safi was definitely his rock, Chris didn’t expect Safi to be perpetually strong. Safi didn’t want to lead tonight, so Christian did.

Moving Belle to Hub had been both happy and sad at the same time. Chris knew she’d miss the city, her jobs, but at the same time, Hub offered her so much more on top of being safer. To Safi’s (not really) credit, he was a good actor. Chris hadn’t known that anything had changed, that there was anything going on. When asked by Tony if he trusted Safi, the magician hadn’t even hesitated; of course he trusted Safi unconditionally.

The statement from Safi earned another, lighter blush. The wink might have been to hide a depth, but Christian just saw it as the playful flirting that Safi meant him to see. Still, he took the words at face value and continued to lead through the dance. Tonight, Chris was happy. He wasn’t always, in fact lately he had been having a harder and harder time finding that cheer that he always wore like armor. Instead, he spent more time working on his projects and less time interacting with the people that meant the most to him. It was easier that way.

“I don’t mind taking the lead if you don’t want it.” Maybe not always, but switching back and forth so they could both find a balance together? He could do that.

He’d been quiet as long as he could, tried to ignore his curiosity, but he only had so much self control. He needed to know what Safi had said when the band had started playing. It kept creeping into his thoughts, and eventually it would drive him mad. Taking a deep breath, he asked, “Jonah isn’t as what, Safi? I couldn’t hear what you had said..”

The end of Chris’s question was lost as the applause met the end of the song, most couples drifting back to their tables as the next course was brought out. He really wasn’t trying to ignore the smaller man, more that he was distracted by the people pressing around them to get seated again as the band stuck up a calmer tune. Some few souls clearly there for romance lingered, using the excuse to move closer and lean on each other.

“Humm?” Safi muttered distracted curling an arm around Chris protectively against any invasions of their space as he walked them back to the table. As he’d warned the salad had vanished replaced by a creamy blue soup. Raising an eyebrow at it dubiously Safi nonetheless took a mouthful, finding it...squash -y? “Pumpkin?” He looked up at the other man to judge, since he was the better chief between them, and pumpkin wasn’t something he’d been familar with before moving to the States, and even since he’d not had many chances beyond the pies from last autumn.

The applause was unexpected, causing Chris it turn and glare at the people applauding as though they had personally offended him. It had been a nice song and a good dance, but Chris just wanted to ask a simple question! He saw the few couples out there and his frustration melted away to a soft smile. He didn’t ask to be one of those few, he understood well enough that that wasn’t for him, but that didn’t mean his heart didn’t linger on the dance floor.

The arm around him distracted him further from his irritation and what he had asked. The contact was nice, when they returned to their table he missed it. This was a dangerous game, it would be so easy, too easy, to forget the reality of their relationship this way. It felt like a real date or maybe even a dream, how Safi was being. There was just the tiniest voice in his head warning that things could only end in pain which Chris was steadfastly ignoring.

Where Safi hesitated to dig into the soup, Chris smiles at the color and gave it a try. And it was good. Surprisingly, considering that Chris wasn’t a huge fan of pumpkin. Well, maybe in bread, but he wouldn’t have thought to like pumpkin soup before today. “Yeah. Pumpkin...adjacent at least. But it’s good.” If he sounded surprised yet please that was because he was! “Do you like it?” Maybe he’d make pumpkin bread in the fall of Safi liked it…. “We’ll have to find out what it is…. Can you imagine this in bread?” He didn’t mention the idea to make it into a pie. Safi didn’t care for pie. But bread, Safi enjoyed.

Safi missed the glare; he was as always oddly unobservant around Chris, perhaps it was wilful blindness, or if one wished a more romantic explanation- he trusted Chris enough not to watch his every expression, someone he could relax his watchful vigilance around. Which if he thought about it sounded very much like he took Chris’s support and good humor for granted.

He was also flip flopping internally about how he was intending to treat Chris, as a friend, or...as the more that he was to him. A state of affairs which was not particularly fair to him.

Chuckling huskily Safi shook his head, “‘Pumpkin adjacent’ doesn't that cover most squash?” he tweaked the other man hurmously. “I think I do? It’s-” Safi’s mouth wiggled thoughtfully, “Oddly creamy nutty, which is not something i’m used to.” Bread? Eyebrows rose in surprise pleasure at the thought. “That would be very very good I think, or maybe roasted and blended in butter?” he offered hesitantly.

Safi reached over for Chris’s free hand, closing around it with familiar warmth; “Thank you for spending your birthday with me.” for once Safi was the needy one, keeping that hand lightly gripping Chris’s across the table as they finished their soup.

It wasn’t often that Christian would truly hide his emotions, and while he remained observant, he certainly relaxed his guard around Safi. He wasn’t tense, looking for danger, because Safi was safety. It was a deep trust, the one that the magician had for the soldier.

The turmoil Safi was feeling was well hidden, or at least well enough that Christian didn’t question it. Then again, Christian had a fairly solid image of what his relationship with Safi was and where he stood. And that image did not line up with romance.

“In a broad sense, yes, but this is like pumpkin’s cooler older brother.” Chris enjoyed pumpkin in very specific ways, ways that did not include pie form. Soup was also not on his list, but this squash, if that was what it was, made soup seem like a good idea. Idly, the magician wondered if they’d had to add sugar at all, or if the squash was naturally sweet tasting. Butter. Safi’s suggestion earned a thoughtful look for a moment as Chris considered the idea before he broke into a wide smile, “If we can get out hands on some, let’s try it. Both of them!”

Thought of cooking and baking ended abruptly when Safi took his hand. Blinking rapidly, Christian’s mind kicked back into gear, this time whirling around that gentle, easy grasp. Was this new? A frantic search of his memories said that yes it was. It was casual, but intimate. It was different than the easy bump of shoulders, or even the relaxed sprawl of both of them on the couch while they watched YouTube. This was somehow more...and he was fairly certain he shouldn’t be reading this much into it but Safi was holding his hand. There was just a moment’s pause between Safi’s words and Christian’s reply, which only made the magician blush, “Oh, um, of course.” I love you, there’s no one I’d rather spend it with aside from my my sister…. but he wouldn’t, couldn’t say those things….

“Is that what you want for your birthday?” Safi rested his hand in Chris’s giving his a squeeze when the other man’s turned to hold his. “What can I give you?” Safi traced his thumb over Chris’s lifeline, a content little smile softening the lines stress etched habitually into his expression.

“I want-” Safi’s hand tightened on Chris, “I want you to be happy.”

Was it what he wanted for his birthday? An image, unbidden by Chris, popped into his mind’s eye of being in the kitchen with Safi, making soup and bread, both of them happy… The flush that spread through him at the thought wasn’t the bright and sudden blushes he so often wore around Safi, but instead a lighter if more deeply felt flush of pleasure and happiness. “You have already given me so much, Safi…” The last thing that Christian truly wished for was the thing that he knew Safi couldn't give him.

The words and the sentiment behind them was both a sting and a balm. Brown eyes wide and dark, Chris reassured Safi, “I am happy, Safi. This last year has been the best of my life, better than all the rest combined. Even with the bad things that we’ve gone through.” He paused to look at Safi for a long moment, “Are…. Are you happy?”

“No.” Safi’s smile was lopsided, too honest and tiny bit broken. “Not ‘happy for what i have’-“ he continued as though correcting Chris not answering his question. “But actually happy. Content, blissful, nothing in the world do I want that I don’t have.” Safi brought Chris’s hand to his lips, gazing his knuckles as he spoke. “I want you have that.” Ocean deep eyes met Chris’s “I want to be selfish.” His voice was a whisper repeating the words that started this adventure “if yesterday and tomorrow don’t exist...what do you want?” Oh he knew the answer didn’t he? How cruel did he intend to be tonight?

The answer was apparently completely. “No consequences-“ lies, there always where- “I want you to do everything, anything you want with me.” There was heat mixed with a nearly fatalist light in his tone. “Take control.” Safi had no idea how ill timed, or how the stone was effecting Chris. All he knew was that he was so very tired of sacrifice, of forcing his idea of balance onto this beautiful man. He just wanted to stop being strong, to be weak for one night, to be everything Chris wanted, to be everything he wanted to be for him.

“Command me.” Safi pressed a kiss to Chris’s palm, “tonight I want to be yours.”

The way Safi was being, holding his hand, speaking so intimately, the lowered voice at the table while straining to be heard and speaking into his ear on the dance floor, it made this feel differently than any other time they’d gone out together save maybe that one time, that first time, when Christian had shyly invited the bodyguard to the party he had put together for a 15 year old’s birthday. It felt like a date, is what it felt like, but Christian had spent the first while here working to not feel that way. Safi made it impossible, though, and Christian had finally given in to the little voice in his mind whispering that this was what he wanted it to be, that he could have what he wanted.

Safi joined that little voice, asking him what he wanted, what he really, really wanted. Telling him that he wanted to give Chris everything, to make him want for nothing, to feel the happiest kind of joy… And Christian knew what he wanted, didn’t he? Of course you do, so don’t be a coward, grab onto the opportunity and take what you want while it’s being offered. Christian spent a lot of energy, a lot of willpower, fighting against so many suggestions that little voice in his head made. Everyone had bad ideas, wanted to do things that weren’t right, sometimes. Not acting on them was the important thing. Sure, he’d been jealous of Tony since that first night in Hub, flirting with Safi like it was his right to do, and then going to bed with him, but Christian had kept his actions in line even if had glared his anger at the hero.

Tonight, Safi was asking him to say what he wanted, what he really wanted. He was saying it would be okay, that tomorrow would be fine, and that little voice in his head agreed entirely with the sentiment and Christian was so tired of saying no… “You.” It had been the silent answer to Safi’s question for so long now that saying it out loud felt wrong somehow. It was something he wasn’t supposed to say, even though he couldn't for the life of him pin down why that was just now. “It’s always been you.” That he wanted, that he didn’t, couldn‘t have.

Not just him, though. That incessant whisper in his mind was right, damn him for it. “I want you to be… You with me.” No Tony, no flirting with someone else or distracted by dangers or disappointed in his magic. The kiss earned a shudder from the little mage, and Chris closed his eyes, focused just on the feeling because the image was too much. “Then be mine because,” he let out a little huff that might have been a self-deprecating laugh, “Because I’ve been yours for a long time now.”

He considered what he could ask Safi to do. "Kiss me so that I believe it." That he believed that Safi loved him, that he believed tomorrow would be okay, that he believed in no consequences.

It was a horrible idea, the most destructive one he’d had since he got high and contemplated eating a bullet that night on the roof with Tony. And he could chose to end it now, leave them both worse with nothing of joy to remember this night by….or he could dive in, take this risk.

Fuck him but he’d always been a sucker for his heart.

Eyes that were just a shade lighter than the men who shared his face deepened at Chris’s breathless command. Humor mixed with lust rumbled out a small chuckle, not at Chris but at himself.

Safi turned Chris’s palm cupping it in his hand, “I’m selfish-“ he began lazily brushing his lips down the line of Chris’s wrist, following the artery. “Everyone is, i try hard to be better, for my girl, for you, for the people i love-“ his teeth bit down ever so slightly at the bend of his wrist. “But at the end of the day I’m not a strong man.” Safi gazed at him. “I’m so tired of pretending that coming home and watching you shout about fondant at a YouTuber isn’t what i look forward to.” He smiled lifting Chris’s hand to cheek smiling against it. “That I am not terrified of hurting you more, that i don’t know how much you coming home to me hurts you.” Safi sighed, long callused fingers massaging Chris’s palm.

“I’m tired of being frightened.” Of losing him. Of Chris going off on another quest and not coming back. Of the thousand unknown dangers of Hub. Of him being found out…

The next song started up and Safi drew Chris’ to his feet, this was a slow near waltz, something that required no concentration- “I want to be with you.” Safi murrumered drawing Chris close, tucking his head into his chest. “To give this a shot. To trust that you are strong enough to tell me to go fuck my self if i start fucking up.” Safi chuckled bitterly. “Because I will. I don’t know how to keep anyone happy.”

His hand slipped down to rest on the hallow of Chris’s back, massaging there under his jacket. “But I’m going to try-“ he took a breath looking up at the crystal ceiling. “Gonna try.” He promised lifting Chris’s chin up dipping his head to whisper- “Because I am pretty damn sure I love you.” The kiss wasn’t lustful for all that it held passion, no it was filled with a promise.

It wasn’t like he had asked for tonight. He actually hadn’t. Did he want it? With all of his heart, yes of course he wanted it, but he hadn’t asked, didn’t expect Safi to lavish him with attention, to offer him his dreams made reality. Tonight had been a surprise from the beginning; being given what he wanted more than all other things, though… And Safi knew exactly what Chris wanted, what he yearned for, when he gave his ‘command’. If Chris were going to act like tomorrow would never come, like there were no consequences, then he needed to believe without fail that tonight was real.

Safi did exactly what Chris told him to.

Chris sucked in a breath that ended in a choked gasp at the sensation of Safi’s lips against his skin. “We…” he breathed and started again, his voice ever so slightly strained, “We’re allowed to be selfish sometimes, Safi. That doesn’t make us weak.” His voice trailed off to breathlessness as Safi nipped at him, unable to easily keep track of what he was saying.

Fondant. The magician’s lips twisted up into a small smile, “You know you feel the same way.” the words were soft, an agreement. Those nights they spent together, watching YouTube and eating popcorn and just relaxing, those were the best nights. The sort of moments that stuck with you, that made you stick it out when it was difficult. Those brown eyes focused on the man before him, honest and open, “You’re what makes it home, Safi. Coming home, you being there, it’s… I cook for you because it’s how I can show you I love you that you don’t mind. Popcorn on the couch, watching...it doesn’t even matter what we put on, that’s home and happiness for me.” Those were the moments that erased the pain, the frustration of everything else. But it only worked when they were both there, both relaxed.

“We’re all frightened sometimes. I’m always afraid, Safi…” His fears weren’t all that much different than Safi’s: losing Safi, Belle going off on another quest and not coming back, of doing something wrong and losing his home, his people.

When Safi stood and took Christian along with him, the smaller man didn’t complain, all thoughts of food were gone now, their meal, mid-way through, was far, far less important than the conversation they were having, than Safi.

”I want to be with you.”

Any doubt, any holdover that this wasn’t real, a dream, a lie, a fantasy they were sharing, shattered at those words. It was everything Chris wanted to hear and never expected to. All of the light caresses and teasing brushes of lips against skin led to those words, built up like a crescendo and then broke over him like the tide. “We’ll both make mistakes, Safi.” The words were rasped out through a throat that held thick emotion, “Of course we will. But we’ve come this far. But I’ll tell you if something goes wrong or bad.” He closed his eyes against Safi’s chest, “You make me happy. Since I’ve met you, you have. You care. I don’t know why, what it is that makes you do that, but you do.”

He was lean, more than he had been when they had gone on that last, horrible adventure, but then, he was busy, they both were. Living two lives, one back home, one in Hub, spending hours locked away on his own with only his orb for company, creating more and more. But a new shirt for an old suit could do wonders to smooth that fact over, the jacket still fit, perhaps not quite as well, but it fit. He listened to Safi, trusted him. It was easy to believe that everything was fine, that tomorrow would bring no unforeseen consequences, when Safi tipped his head back. “I love you. I know I do.” Tonight, there wasn’t the same hesitation there had been that first time, at the party Christian had put together for someone else. The magician was aware of his own feelings, knew this man well enough, loved him well enough, that there could be no hesitation, no moment of realization or question. Those moments had long passed, begun during that first dance, travelling on the train to Gotham, solidified over karaoke and tarot cards and passing through an unknown portal to look for his sister. Chris kissed Safi and fed his love into that embrace. A promise, yes for both of them, one made to one heart and given to the other in return.
