More than a decade of marriage.
Two beautiful, accomplished children to follow him, the trial of being Patriarch past the first hurdle…

Henri smiled to himself cutting the final wire, all and all not a bad record.

He really shouldn’t be whistling but he was in too good a mood and it wasn't as though he was on a job.

Stepping back he overlooked his work critically, being a Theif meant not just knowing how to steal but also how to forge and Henri...henri specialized in jewelry reproductions, which meant he had a wealth of normally untapped skills when it came to creating unique pieces.

Reaching back to the ‘flowers’ he tweaked a final fire emerald leaf into place. Fifteen years. That deserved something more than his traditional bespoke heist, homemade cooking night out.

No this year he had instead of letting Merci pick her present for him to ‘acquire’ he had spent instead time crafting a bouquet of flowers, each in a bloom carved by his own hands from individual precious gems from earth and far flung universes, one for each year of their marriage, the long silver stems were arranged in a mosaic vase, represented on it were delicately tiled pictures of their family.

For once he would not escort her from their home, instead he requested her presence, sending along a detailed note of which portal to venture through and how to find him.

Henri smiled looking at the rest of his preparations; there was a reason he wanted her to come to him; this world had a strange axial tilit that along with its rings and pockets of lowered or null gravity lead to a fantastic view from the clear bubble topped club he’d rented out.

The unobtrusive flying insect like hosts murmured into his ear that this wife was arriving. Henri nodded, glancing up to verify the roof was still opauge.

The moment she stepped in the band he’d also imported began to sing.

It was perhaps not the most romantic song, but for henri it perfectly encapsulated everything he’d hoped to feel and had come to since he’d walked her down the aisle.

Holding out his hand for hers Henri smiled drawing her out to the dance floor, leading her through the low gravity bubbles as they danced. “Happy anniversary Cheri.” He murmured, the roof opening up to reveal the moon’s surface, the rings brilliantly illuminated above them.

Fifteen years.

It had been fifteen years since she'd walked down the aisle on her father's arm, to be given in marriage to the heir to the Thieve's Guild. They'd been paired up to seal an alliance, but somehow they'd turned what could have been a business arrangement into a love match. That love had become the cornerstone of her life, and Mercy still regarded the fact that Henri loved her with bewildered awe.

Of course, that wasn't the only thing that took her breath away, as she caught a few glimpses of the world Henri had brought her to. The little insects floated around her like jewels, and the hints of the view that she caught as she looked out the windows that lined the hallway were intoxicating.

Almost as intoxicating as the sight of her husband as he pulled her onto the dance floor.

"Mon amour, yo' have outdone yo'self." she said, looking up at the sky.

Alliance that had become so much more. Henri tucked his wife against his frame, following her down into a low dip, loath to sacrifice even a moment of contact.

‘How could I ask for more? A lifetime of laughter at the expense of a death of bachelor.’

He grinned at the crooned lyric, yes that was the truth, stars illuminated them from the exposed crystal clear roof, Henri brushed his hand over her hair, swaying still to the music. “Yo’ deserve de best.” the rings of the moon made a halo of sorts when he spun her. “I would steal the stars for you, crown yo’ with them-” his thumb brushed under her eye, “An’ they would no compare t’de illumination in yo’ eyes.”

Mercy let out a little giggle and replied, her grin answering his as she spoke "Dis Mercy never see a bachelor as eager t'die as yo' were, chere. O'course dis Mercy was just as eager t'do de deed." And not just for the sake of the alliance, or because she'd already been carrying his child, but because she'd thought that they could build something real and sweet and true together.

"An' yo' always give me de best." she said "An' de only sparkle Ah need are de ones en yo' eyes when yo' smile at me. Dis Merci does no' need de stars, all Ah need es yo' love." because when it came to sweet words, she wasn't going to let Henri best her. Not to mention the fact that it had the benefit of being true. "Not dat dis Mercy will say no' to any little t'ing yo' might have stolen." she added with a little smirk.

Edger for it? Henri remembered their wedding day; he had not loved her at that moment, but he’d had respected and liked her which was all was all he had demanded of them both before they committed to this life.

It had not taken long though for that ‘like’ to flourish into something more, deeper that was able to hold them both through the trials that had come...and the ones that were still coming. “Ah than tonight dis Henri has disappointed his aimé.” He couldn’t stop smiling at her, drawing her back to his chest slipping his hands over her eyes. “Dis year I make your gift wit mah own hands.” his fingers spiderwebbed away releasing her vision to reveal the ‘bouquet’ and painted and inlaid vase.

It hadn't been love, not at first, but there had been respect, liking, and a good dose of desire, and that had been all that Mercy had needed to be not just willing, but eager for their wedding.

"Yo' have no' disappointed me, chere." Mercy replied, taking a moment to kiss him before she admired the gift in more detail. "Dis es beautiful work, Henri. Dis year, yo' have outdone yo' self." she looked up at him with a radiant smile, happy that he'd put so much time and effort into the gift, a clear sign that the tension that had been between them was well in the past.

There would always be ripples, angry words, situations that disturbed the contentment they had built year after year, but Henri had faith that ripples are what they would be and no more, there was too much adoration, too many years, for any disturbance to last.

Henri rubbed his cheek over the side of her elegantly styled hair, mussing it with willful playfulness. “T’ank you fo” bein’ mah wife.” Henri leaned down to kiss her cheek.

Mercy tried and failed to give him a reproving look for the way he'd mussed her hair. "Yo' es welcome Monsuier Lebeau" she said, smirking at him. "An' t'ank yo' fo' bein' such a good husband." after another kiss she said "An' jus' t'ink, en a few mo' years we will be lookin' fo' a femme for petit Jean-Luc. An' fo' Sabine, no' long after dat." she paused for a moment and said "But dis will no' be de next weddings en de famile, non?"

“Non.” he sighed, objecting even as he acknowledged the realities of his position and what that meant for his son. Spinning Mercy he drew her back in tightly, “Es selfish o’me but I wish dat I could give him a love match.” he shook his head sadly, “Sabine...es a chance fo’ her if we no need an alliance-” he flashed a quick smile down at her “Dis Henri an’ his pare at least have made it so dat they have no crib betrothals.” the first generation that had avoided that fate by Henri’s vocal and hard working objections.

“Go on than.” he sighed “Who have you put your eyes on for our heir?” Because she more than he would have been watching the young women and their families for who would be acceptable to her as a future daughter in law.

"Even if we try t'give him a love match, we can no' change who he is, chere." Mercy pointed out "Could we be sure dat de fille who was settin' her cap at him was doin' et fo' de sake o' his smile, o' because she want t'wed yo' Heir? De best we can do, Ah t'ink es t'find him a bon fille who he can love, an' who can love him. An' dat may be de best t'ing fo' de Sabine as well, chere. Ah agree wit' yo' dat arranging marriages fo' babes still en de cradle es somet'ing t'put a stop to, but arranged marriages are no' always bad." she slid a hand affectionately over his shoulder "Ah know dat Ah would no' have dared t'speak t'yo', let alone hope t'be yo' femme. An' love marriages are no' always happy ones." She had been happy in her marriage, and knew that part of that was due to luck, but as she'd gotten to know her father-in-law better, she'd also wondered if he'd done his best to select someone who he hoped would be compatible with his son. Whether or not that was true, she was determined to do that for her children.

"Dere are a few filles en de Guild who might make a good match for 'Luc." she replied, "Ah t'ink et would be best t'marry him in de T'ieves Guild, an' dere are no suitable girls en de Assassin's Guild, anyway." Marrying him out of the Guilds was not something that could be considered, not for Henri's Heir, and well, the Guilds other than the Thieves and the Assassin's were not ones that Mercy would consider for her son. Or for her daughter "De one dat Ah t'ink would be best es Seraphine Dugas." the adopted daughter of Claudette and Gabrielle Dugas. Both of them were good friends of Mercy's, Claudette, in particular, had been a very good friend, although that had ended before she'd married Gabrielle. "Yo' know her, she es smart, an' a good thief, an' only a year younger den Jean-Luc. An' dey like each ot'er." she looked at her husband, wondering what he'd say.

Henri just sighed, resting his cheek in her hair as they danced, “Oui, but perhaps I am no as hard as I should be, but i would no wish the choices dat I have forced t’make on him.” He smiled down at her fondly kissing her lingeringly. “No matter dat at least one brought me happiness.” Listening to his wife’s assessment Henri’s mobile mouth turned down slightly at the corner. “What dat boy needs is a strong femme, an you need a daughter dat can stand up t’you.” He rubbed his nose over hers, humor lightening his eyes to nearly silvery clear.

“A wilting girl does no one good.” He added in case his darling wilful wife objected. “Set her cap...Dat..” Henri hummed thoughtfully a odd little smirk that heralded an idea that was not expected. “Now would that be no interesting?” He hummed again clearly thinking half aloud.

“Dere are years yet...but what if we have a ball for his comin’ O’age?” Henri’s eyes gleamed with mischievous intent. “Ah masked ball, und die femmes that find our young prince...well Dey are de most determined no? For his smile or for the Guild. Either way we learn more about who truely wishes t’be de next Madam LeBeau.”

He did not ignore her suggestion, but he thought there were too many years yet to see what a girl was made of before the time for true grooming was at hand.

"Ah know dat yo' want what es best fo' de boy." Mercy replied "An' Ah want t'see him happy too. Et will be easier on him, anyway, he will marry a fille he has known fo' a long time, and dere will be a chance t'find him someone he can love, an' who can love him. Or mebbe who he love already, come t'dat." catching his expression she said "An' yo' t'ink dat Ah would have mah eye on a doormat? Ah like de fille, true, but Ah like her because she has spirit. Yo' remember de picnic a few years back? De girl who yo' had t'fetch down from de tree because everyone was afraid she'd fall comin' down? Dat was Seraphine, an' she was up dere because she want t'prove dat Jean-Luc could no' out climb her. But she es just one possibility, dere are ot'ers. Is dere anyone who stick out t' yo'?"

Mercy laughed "Yo' are too romantic, chere. Et es an idea, bu Ah wonder if et would set de filles, an dere parents at drawn daggers." she smiled "But we could try et. Es more dramatic dan de idea his Maman had, which was t'wait unti he seventeen or so, an' say t'him dat he es much too young t'start courtin' a girl, den sit back an' watch who's window he climb through dat night." because her son was stubborn, and contrary, and telling him he couldn't do something was the quickest way to make him want to do it. "Let him make de choice, instead of just throwing him t' de wolves."

“Oui an’?” Henri might be a romantic, he might be the diplomat prince, but he was also deeply pragmatic. “Too much peace es also no good. Better to let the cats have an outlet for der venom.” Henri chuckled “den yo’ an’ me-“ he curled his index finger under chin. “Find if der be hidden vipers dat we must quash fo’ our son.” Henri laughed at her suggestion. “Oui dat as well, but dat problem comes if he takes after his Pere.” Henri’s eyes gleamed. “For den we will be counting the number of windows an’ no knowing which is love of more than a night.”

Henri and Remy has quite the reputation, and in the Guild it had been easy for the charismatic LeBeau boys to seduce and be seduced earlier than he really wanted to worry about distaff grand babies.

“Ah. Dere can be hidden so strength in the quiet ones Chere.” As well he knew.

“Have I neglected t’say dat I love yo’ in die last few minutes?” Henri slid his hand over her jaw into her hair, “I mus’ correct dis-“ He murmured capturing her lip, drawing her against his body, just a hint of possessive roughness in his hold.

"Either way, he will have plenty o'chances t'tomcat around, if he is goin' t'go dat way." Mercy pointed out. She was well aware of the swath that the Lebeau boys had cut through the young women of the Thieve's Guild, and had no doubt that Jean-Luc could do the same, if he chose. Or he might be like his namesake, who's amorous adventures were far less legendary "Even if we arranged somet'ing fo' him tomorrow, dat would no' change. An', oui, we must have an eye out fo' vipers with sweet faces, as 'Luc gets older." Adding, with honest self-reflection "An' make sure dat we do no' see vipers where dere are none, if he pick a girl dat we do no like. Et matters why we does no' like her, non?" Mercy was determined to give any girl her son set his eye on a fair chance, since in the end it was his happiness, and the happiness of his bride, that would matter.

"Ah t'ink dat et has been a few minutes." she agreed just before he pulled her in for a kiss, melting into him, the hint of possession and passion in his kiss exciting her. As he must have known it would.

“Oui.” He bit down on her lower lip with a growl; this was always their problem, either one had lost any desire for the other. A fact that Mercy would be well aware of pressed so closely against him, “it will be a delicate wire to walk, we mus’ be fair but young love es no always meant t’last.” Which was why if he had his way he would break the tradition of 17 and wed.

Henri was certain that he owed much of the success of his own marriage to the fact that he’d been mature enough to give her the work and effort that his life mate deserved. instead of simply bedding her and assuming that was enough.

That of course did not mean they never argued.

“An’ I was no ignorin’ yo’ question: yes Remy es to ask Jaya t’wed, an’ if she an’ her guild agree to terms dan next we must plan this great event.”

"If dat es what yo' want, den Ah can agree." Mercy said thoughtfully "Ah know dat yo' would rather see him marry later, an' to de fille of his choice. Bien, we can try t'do dat fo' him. But et must be his choice, an' no jus' what yo t'ink es best fo' him. But we can wait a few years befo' dis es discussed wit' him. Give de boy time t'grow an' learn, no?" After all, it might be that Jean-Luc would prefer to marry young, and to a girl of his parent's choosing. Unlikely, but she didn't want to have her son pushed into something he was unhappy with because her husband was determined to modernize the way that the Guild's members found their spouses.

A determination that made her wonder, sometimes if he was.....but no, Henri loved her deeply, and his desire for her, well, that could not be doubted at this moment. She kissed him, her passion and desire matching his, as it always did.

"Oui, we must do dat." Mercy agreed, doing her best to keep her doubts out of her voice. She was still not pleased by the whole arrangement, even though she knew that it was what was best for the Guild, and that in any case Remy would do what he liked "I know yo' have yo' heart set on a big weddin' en de family chapel, is dat what Remy an' Jaya would want? Et es certain dat et es no de weddin' she dreamed of as a girl, her people must have their own way o' getting married." or not, considering, but Mercy knew that speculating about that would push Henri to defend the honor of....well, of the person who Remy was apparently determined to marry.

The Guild would be pulled into modern practices kicking and screaming...or quietly from the top. Either way it was simply inevitable, old did not meant ‘better’ a fact that oddly the Guild accepted when using new tools but rejected or allowed slowly when it came to tradition.

It was not his copy of marriage he wished to prevent for his son, but that of Remy and Belladonna’s aborted one. If they had been older, if that idiot brother of hers…

He heard how carefully she spoke, Mercy was apparently keeping her promise to speak as his wife should and must to his brothers beloved. “An’ she can have dis, but first we must make the show for the Guild.” It wasn’t a discussion, but he would explain his thoughts. “For more den a decade the Assassin’s have held over us the death of the bastard. The Duel was legal, witnessed, and if it had no been the Patriarchs son than Remy would still be with us.” Old anger at the injustice hardened his tone. “An’ we have eaten dis; allowed our Prince t’be sacrificed for a war we could no win.” She knew all of this, and his cold bitter rage should come as no surprise even if he did not talk about it often. Partially out of respect for her old family.

“Now Belladonna es Queen, an’ she has de power t’let the matter die. If we bring Remy t’our chapel an’ invite her...an’ she comes as de Queen t’the Patriarch Sons wedding the den it is done, quietly wit no need t’show de neck of Thief or Assassin.” Of course there was a risk that she would come...and demand Remy’s head.

Henri kept close watch on the state of Assassin Court, the Thieves and Whores kept close ties, and the Assassins availed them of their skills.

Belladonna was secure in her position, and he believed she still loved Remy in some part of her heart.

The question was if she did come for his head, or if she loved him too much to see him with another.

If she did that… Henri would fight her himself; his line was secure in his son and daughter. His death-(and Henri had no illusions about his skills vs the Queen of Assassins) Would buy Remy’s place back into the Guild.

But he doubted she would force the issue to that extent.

"Oui, yo' are correct." Mercy replied. She'd been as angry as he, when Belladonna's idiot brother had challenged Remy to a duel, and then, after the idiot had died, the Assassin's had demanded his exile. Her own father among them. She had not spoken to her father about the matter, then or later, knowing that he'd inform her that she had no place in Assassin affairs. Which was true enough, and she was glad that she was no longer part of that, but it made the sting of the events all the more bitter.

"Ah can see de point o' a public weddin', t'mark de end of de feud." which was what their marriage was supposed to have ended, and it was true enough that in many ways it had been the beginning of the end. "But...de Bella Donna, she has no' wed." Meaning that she might still have designs on Remy, or at least not feel herself free to marry while he was still alive, annulment or no. She did not point out the risks involved, Henri would have already thought of them "Come to et, Ah will be de one t'duel her." Mercy said quietly.

Henri might be modernizing the Guild, might head Mercy as his wife and partner, but in the end he was still a creature that believed in the absolute power of his decision, once made it was unrelenting.

“Dat can be no our problem.” He saw her point but- “I will no tell Remy dat he can no marry till Bella Donna weds, we, de Guild owe him too much.” his gaze implored her to understand. That was the true reason he had pushed so hard with this; he needed to clear the debit to Remy.

..and he missed his little brother.

“He has never even seen our childen.” those missing years of being able to show his son to his brother, to having Remy fuss over Mercy…

“You will not.” Henri paused in their dance, “Because Sabine will need yo more den me, and Jean Luc es too young to lose his Mama t’dis war.” he curled his hands around her jaw protectively. “An’ because I could no be strong enough t’ no cry vengeance fo’ yo’ blood.” He would not care that it would undo everything that he worked for. If he lost Merc to this feud than he would lose his ability to be rational.

"Ah did no mean dat we should ask Remy t'wait, jus' dat de Bella Donna might have no' gotten over Remy. Which es her problem, oui, but if she take offense, et could be our problem to."

And there Henri was, determined to protect her from harm. "Bella Donna es less likely to kill me." Because she and Mercy were friends, and because Mercy had trained in the same arts that Bella Donna had. "An' et will be hard fo' Luc, to loose his Pere, an' t'be forced into bein' Patriarch befo' he es ready. De Guild, de need yo'. An' if de worst happen, yo' will be strong, an' do what yo' must."
