Kai floated awkwardly in the middle of space, typing and then deleting countless different variations of the same message. It was enough that she had tossed her phone as far as she could more than once at this point out of frustration. She also didn't know how many 'how to' articles she could read before her eyes actually started falling out of her head in rebellion. She was at the point where she wasn't even certain that the words on pages were sentences.

So there she was, throwing her head back in exhaustion such that she started doing slow back flips in space. She was... well. She wasn't prepared for rejection. Kai wanted to pretend she had emotions of steel, but the truth was that she was pretty certain her budding hopes were going to be crushed if Jake turned her down. In part because... even without the sex, he was her friend. She didn't have an overwhelming number of those, and the idea of him not being able to get past an awkward conversation sucked so much. Kai would almost go back to Arjay and ask for advice on how to stop yourself from loving someone rather than admit that she'd be torn to pieces if she couldn't even joke around with Jake anymore.

She was being so completely, absolutely ridiculous. The inhuman knew in some small way that she just being so emotional now because she was letting herself- but she also knew that if she waited until the emotions settled, she probably wouldn't have the motivation to have this conversation.

And, despite her nerves, the idea of Jake agreeing was keeping her insides all kind of warm and bubbly.

Kai forced herself to stop her slow pathetic flips, took a deep breath and slapped her cheeks softly. Because she was being ridiculous- She was Kailani Fucking Mahelona and she was a major catch. Jake was a really good guy too- so what if the sex stopped? She didn't think he'd never speak to her again just because she wanted more of a relationship than he did. She knew that they could be friends despite this- even if it took a while to settle into a new normal. She'd be able to move on- somehow. And it would be okay. Even if it wasn't for a little bit.

She hit the delete button and pressed call instead. When the line connected, Kai started speaking before she could change her mind. "Hey Jake- if you aren't busy, I was wondering if you might come spend some time with me. Any interest?"

The robots were Manhunters, and Jake was royally screwed.

Finding a portal forming that led to a universe where the Corps existed was something of a rarity in Jake’s experience. He’d gone to investigate, rather excited about the prospect of seeing what the Green Lanterns of another universe were like. He probably would never know whether his presence near that portal had caused it or if he had just ended up in the right place at the right time (or wrong place at the wrong time), but instead of making contact with any Green Lantern Corps, his ring’s alarm had gone to DEFCON 1 right before the portal started disgorging the emerald-powered monsters.

Power levels at 31.22%
Rage unlocked

His green ring had been drained low by now, but the Manhunters thankfully didn’t seem to be able to drain the white ring. With a snarl of frustration, he held his joined fists out in front of him, emerald light coalescing into an enormous dragon that snapped up a cluster of those robots in its jaw, then disgorged a torrent of the crimson light of Jake’s rage at the robots that were, even now, trying to make it past him into the Hub. Just like when he’d unleashed the light of fear on that bleak, dying world, Jake was somewhat alarmed to find that letting loose with his rage… felt good. And it wasn’t wrong, was it. These monsters had wiped out an entire world, they’d murdered his fellow Lanterns, and now they were coming to try to take on his new home? Like hell! The red light began dancing in front of his eyes as crimson flames coalesced in front of him, shaping into wolves and demons…

Then, of course, his phone rang, with Kai’s ringtone.

Growling in frustration, he pulled the phone out, looked at it, and then answered it. The manhunters pressed forward, but he gave them an angry wave of his hand that sent burning, corrosive plasma rolling over their forward lines. “Hello? Kai? Why are you using your phone, did you lose your ring?” Oh, screw it, that wasn’t important. Her question was, on the other hand… and alarmingly, as he considered that possibility, he felt that righteous rage start to flicker out. Oh shit… “I’d love to, Kai? But I’m kind of in a bit of an ‘alien robot’ situation, that… ah, damn it!” A blast from an oncoming Manhunter slammed against his shields, and Jake lost his grip on his phone. Welp, that’s going to be five hundred credits to replace, he thought as he watched a blast from the Manhunters shear his phone in half. “Ring, locate Star Sapphire Mahelona, establish connection.” He spun around, catching a Manhunter blast on a green shield, then began pushing them back. “Sorry, got cut off, like I said, alien robot problem. Think maybe you could help? Free me up from this and I’m all yours.”

Kai nearly panicked a little when Jake almost growled in reply. She had been sitting here focusing on how badly things could go- and the tone Jake had was focused all too prominently in a number of the situations she had come up with. Then he elaborated that he would enjoy that but he was busy- and... after her discussion with Arjay, the word love had her warm and happy and maybe a little slow on the uptake when she heard the sounds of battle.

Kai had spent enough time as a superhero to have a pretty good idea what the sound associated with a phone being destroyed- more than once, the people she had fought with had lost their phones mid-fight. It was new to her that she was apparently capable of talking with Jake via ring- but then she was still learning the intricacies of the device. Either way, once she had processed the noise, she had a very clear picture of what was happening when her ring picked up a connection incoming from Jake.

There was a brief moment of amusing overlap as her ring answered the query 'Locate Green Lantern Alexander', as well as the first few words out of her ring from Jake.

'Green Lantern Alexander is located in-'
'-Sorry got cut off-'

Not quite managing to hold back a quiet snicker at the overlap of voices, Kai glared at her ring, trying to tell it to shut up without saying it out loud for Jake to hear. If she wasn't about to head into battle, she was sure her nerves would stop her from flirting, but thankfully, she was going towards a fight, and that sent adrenaline to help her face that.

"All mine, hmm?" Kai offered, rolling the sounds on her tongue. "Maybe..." She added, already heading towards the relevant portal despite her words. "I might need more motivation. What does being all mine entail huh? How long do I get to keep you for?" Her words came through louder and more clear before suddenly dropping in volume as the connection dropped because he could hear her without the aid.

Doing her best impression of a baseball player sliding onto home plate, she skidded into the nearest robot, ripping it's head off and doing a backflip to stab her crystals into the next man hunter. Her lesson hadn't been very based on the combat potential of love, but it was certainly helped her keep up the shield that was protecting her.

Grinning as she swung the robots into each other with a pleasing crunch, she added a wink at Jake. "Hey there Handsome, what's a nice guy like you doing in a place like this?"

Thank god, she had been close by. “Oh, you know, just living the dream,” he quipped back. This would have been a lot more relaxing of a fight with another Lantern next to him, except that these were Manhunters, and Manhunters were nasty pieces of work that came in force when they came at all.

Power levels at 13%

“Damn it!” Jake muttered, and he was pleased to see that red glow creeping into the white ring again. “Be careful. These things can drain rings. They don’t seem to be able to do anything to this one,” he said, giving his right hand with the white ring a wave, “But my green ring’s almost dry, and they might be able to drain yours, too. These are Manhunters.” He held up the white ring, and found that the yellow light came easily enough to him, conjuring a small squadron of the robots to attack the real ones, giving them a brief reprieve. “My bosses made them about a million years ago, before they got the idea for us. They gave up on them when their stupid programming decided that it would be a great idea to start decimating planets. Since then they’ve upgraded, and they like to come try to kill us when they get an excuse.”

And he’d pulled her right into a fight with them. Damn it, he was an idiot…

Rage
“That’s your thing, isn’t it? You like to kill Lanterns. Well NOT. TODAY. BASTARD,” he snarled, and once more, the red light of his rage came, forming into a swarm of wolves that clawed and burned into the metal of the robots. “Take them out from a distance,” he growled. “Don’t let them get close enough to you to drain you. The rage was stronger this time, and Jake had a vague suspicion that the lower his green ring’s charge got, the more the other lights coming from the other ring could escape. That was something to worry about later, after he didn’t get Kai killed by being an idiot enough to pull her into a battle with these monsters…

Kai grinned at Jake's easy quip, and moved to reply when he started cursing. She was so distracted by his warnings, explanation, and obvious distress- she didn't even notice the manhunter coming behind her until it had it's ugly metal mitt halfway around her neck.

She was very grateful that she thought quick- because rather than try and wail on it and let it get a grip on her, Kai simply dropped out of lantern form. In doing so, dropping her flight capabilities, and falling out of the robot's grip as fast gravity could take her. Once she was safely out of reach of the beast, she let her clothes once again evaporate into violet light. The cargo pants, bathing suit top- and machine gun construct? Put together, Kai felt like fucking rambo, unleashing hell on these beasts from below before finally stopping her fall and shooting back up.

Circling the group of bots to keep them contained, Kai moved around until she stood beside Jake. She watched him for just a brief moment as he... started to breathe lava? She wasn't really certain, but he looked a hell of a lot more angry than he had before.

She wondered idly if he was angrier because the manhunters were attacking someone other than just him now. Something that Kai could consider later- when there weren't enemies trying to get the drop on her or Jake.

Throwing a shield up to protect him from a blast, Kai hooked her fingers in his jacket. "Sorry handsome, I'd wait til later to undress you, but I have needs." She muttered, unable to contain her flirting, despite having a reason for her actions. The violet crystals that had previously lined her arms in deadly spikes slid easily under her lover's super suit. It was only the seriousness on Jake's face that stopped her from teasing her extra appendages against his skin.

"Figured you'd rather I grope you than blind you by layering rocks on your face. If your white ring is somehow invulnerable- our best shot is with you amped up. No arguments." She explained, moving to take more of a guarded position. "I'll cover defense. Just focus on your offense."

Jake could have argued, could have argued hard, but he didn’t have the time to spend arguing. For one thing, her stones amped him, and his power came from his rings, not him, so he was pretty sure this was an exercise in futility, but again, he wasn’t going to start arguing now when he should be focused on killing Manhunters.

His green ring was nearly dry, and so he didn’t even bother trying to use it. He was too lost in the other ring, and he found that he had a lot to pull from there, too. Red flaming predators leapt from Manhunter to Manhunter, tearing corrosive claws through them, leaving them slowly smoldering pieces of wreckage. Golden Manhunters herded them in, reflecting the terror he suppressed toward these mechanical monsters. All the while, the green shield of his will surrounded him, because green ring or not, conscious or not, he still had the will to fend these things off.

She was going to cover the defense. All right, he supposed he could let her try… but no, she did seem to be managing it. She didn’t seem to be putting up much offense, but the defense she had was surprisingly solid. Well… in that case, he supposed that this might actually work. He could focus on ripping these things apart, and she wouldn’t let them touch him. He just had to have faith in her, and he found that was easier than he had expected. He could trash these things all day long, and Kai wouldn’t let him get hurt.

Hope
Power Levels Rising
“You are NOT. Winning. Today!” The amount of light flying through the ranks of the Manhunters was absolutely blinding as green and blue joined the red and yellow. Finally, as Manhunter parts littered the sky around them, Jake blew an enormous jet of red plasma out at the portal, engulfing it, not even caring if it was even possible to destroy it like this, just swept up in the sheer animal need to destroy that thing that was threatening them.

Finally, panting, exhausted, he floated in midair, glaring at the hole in space that was still glowing red from his attack, like he’d somehow heated that rift in space to the melting point. Crimson light still lingered around him, swirling into the green light of his aura as his eyes darted around for something else to attack.

Watching Jake's defenses drop, as much as a fighter was prone to do on at any time, made Kai grin self consciously. She had told him she was going to cover him, but it wasn't always easy to trust in someone else's attention or ability. Especially when someone was used to fighting on their own more than anything. It made her happy to know that the same as she did, he could also trust her to keep him safe.

It seemed like no time at all before Jake was straight burning the hole in the sky shut.

Kai was uncertain how she was supposed to feel about that- though she did automatically tug on her stones to return them to their home on her skin. The way Jake was nearly growling meant that it was time to drop out of battle stance and hopefully manage some kind of soothing for him. Kai floated over to him, carefully taking his hand in her own, caressing the side of his face.

"It's okay Jake. They're gone. Neither of us are hurt, you kept them from entering the hub, and they won't come back." She murmured, knowing that her last statement was unproveable, but needing to calm Jake down.

It took her only a brief moment to war the value of kissing the mouth that had just let out a burst of plasma- but that mouth was on Jake, so she didn't have to think too hard before she claimed his lips. She hooked her arms around his neck, appreciating that flying made the height difference invalid.

Kai was content to stay there, enjoying what could potentially be the last kiss she ever had with the green lantern, knowing all too well what negative responses he could have to what she wished to talk about. Eventually she did pull away for some unfortunately necessary air, though she offered him a brilliant smile regardless.

"Now then, let's try this again." She said with a wink, lips dropping into a pseudo serious expression- mischief still clear in her eyes. "Hey Jake, are you free?"

God damn, he was angry. It had been an entire tour in the corps worth of having it drilled into his head that he had to control his feelings, about the evils of acting rashly, since he’d really given in to pure rage like this. It felt good, it felt liberating, to let himself feel all of those things that for fuck’s sake, he had the right to feel. Sure, anger could be irrational, but was this?

Well… maybe. And as he felt Kai’s hand close around his, he felt that red haze lifting from his eyes, that burning fury that had driven him on ebbing away. His rage at the Manhunters was justified… but they were gone now, weren’t they? Anger for anger’s sake was… stupid. He let himself relax, and felt her lips pressing to his… which effectively banished any further rage form his mind. He felt a spike of fear, of course, that somehow, the red power lingered and would harm her as she touched his lips, but she didn’t cry out, didn’t scream in pain, and so he let go of that as well, realizing that yes, everything was all right.

“Yeah,” he finally said. “They’re gone… but they could be back.” He turned his head, looking at that hole in space that he’d poured his rage on. The glow on it was dying, but the blind rage hadn’t been able to do more than cover it with its power. Hell, the red light might have leaked through and made the area even easier to notice. He couldn’t have that. This wasn’t a job for blind force, he had to actually work at it, hoping it would work. He looked down at the two rings on his fist, then pointed them at the portal. Emerald and azure light washed over it, pushing the portal closed, controlling the fluctuations of power that were caused by altering the portal. They worked slowly at first, but after a moment the portal visibly contracted in on itself, finally vanishing with a little ‘pop’ of power. “Okay… now they won’t be back,” he said, nodding, turning his attention back to Kai. “So… no, I’m not free. I kind of promised this really, really amazing girl that I’d be all hers, and she kind of saved my ass, so…” He grinned, still looking a bit worn and tired, but like he was starting to get over it. “What’d you have in mind?”

Kai watched with interest as Jake closed the hole in the sky. There was no fear on her part, no worry that he wouldn't be able to get the job done- just a fascination with the varying abilities he possessed.

She did feel an absurd spike of fear when he started to reply. And... She was maybe incredibly jealous of this 'amazing girl' that had Jake's attention. Kai would have been happy to never feel that sour sinking feeling, though she was sure Arjay would tell her it was just another part of love. Yet here she was, muscles tensed from emotion, wishing that Jake could be a little less complimentary about this stupid bitch that-

Was her. Yeah that tracked with how she felt at that moment. Stupid and bitchy- Kai should have known better. Jake was too good to do that to her- Hell, Kai was pretty sure he was just generally too good for her. Just another facet of the absurd anxiety that was bubbling in her chest again now that she didn't have a battle to distract herself with.

She forced herself to take a deep breath before she spoke. "I was hoping we could talk. Which is to say, I have something to say and I was hoping you'd listen and reply?"

Kai mumbled her words awkwardly, dropping her arms from Jake's neck to give him space to run away before she continued. She couldn't stop herself from twisting her ring for something to do. "I'll just hop straight into it and if you decide you want to leave, that's alright, I understand. I don't want you to feel obligated in any fashion." Kai repeated, quoting one of the articles she had read.

"I like you. Like. A lot. And I had kind of thought I was aromantic so I like you more than I thought I was even capable of, and I'd like some sort of serious relationship thing." Kai managed before her words devolved into familiar rambling. "I mean, even if you would be okay with trying that out obviously we don't need to jump straight to boyfriend and girlfriend, or I don't know, I've never done this before, and I have no proof since I've never really had a relationship but I think I'd probably be okay with you sleeping with other girls still, I don't really equate sex with emotion except with you so I guess I do now but for the most part I still don't I think, I mean I'm certainly physically attracted to people other than you but you're the only one who makes my heart do this dumb fluttery thing-" Kai didn't even try to stop the word vomit this time- not intellectually anyways, her brain was in full on overload, and she wasn't sure that shutting it down would work. At this point she was going for containment- which would be why she clasped both hands to her mouth as she continued to murmur noises behind it for a second.

Forcing a deep breath, she pulled her hands down away from her face.

"That-" Kai sighed, confident she had just screwed up because why in the hell would anyone want her after hearing a single word she spoke. Still, she swallowed the tears that were threatening to choke her and gave Jake the biggest smile she could- which to be fair was not very large. "That's what I wanted to say. Well- a little more than I had intended, and not eloquent or particularly convincing like I had hoped- but I didn't want to drag you off somewhere to hang out and then ruin it by dropping this on you. Figure this way you can get away real quick if you want." She spoke softly, cheeks shaking from the effort of keeping a smile on her face because-

Because she was a stupid bitch. She was so fucking dumb because even if there had been a snowball's chance in hell that Jake would have wanted her as well, Kai was certain that she had torpedoed that. No one wanted a clingy significant other, probably least of all an intergalactic hero. He probably had met so many incredible women- what the hell gave her the confidence to think even for a second that she could be enough? And Kai and her fucking mouth had to go ahead and tell him- more than once even- that she was completely inexperienced, that she didn't know anything about relationships. Hell she had even told him she still wanted to bang other folks- what part of any of that made her desirable in any way, shape, or form?

Worst of all, her stupid super powered brain was processing every second like a lifetime, so she was left to wallow in her misery as she waited for Jake to speak.
