The Soul yes. But who said it was attuned to a benevolent one? Soul was selfish, greedy, raw the absolute ID of humanity. All want, desire, hungry, grasping.

No Tony Stark had not made the sacrifices necessary to control the Stone, but the two had been connected together, forced into a bond that neither wished for, yet one the Stone was determined to make the most of now that it finally had the last pieces to its completion, to own Tony Stark completely.

Scott’s head vanished in a welter of blood and bone, vaporizing with all the realism of an unarmored skull exposed to a direct hit. Friday was rather glad she wasn’t human to be subjected to the smell and feel of blood and viscera in the air...and splattered over exposed skin.

Friday was the odd girl out, watching the two Avengers from a universe not her own bob, weave and now that their goal was clear, frankly decimate the soul stone’s projections. There was something wonderful, awe inspiring, and dreadful watching the elegant ballet of destruction the two laid out against their fellows.

Even trying to avoid battle left scars on the building, and the Stone’s projections had no such compunctions, leveling whole floors in their attempts to stop the pair.

“I am reading two humans.” Friday reported at last, the prolonged battle had left its marks on both men, yet they were now at the lab. “The Lab doubles as the Armory, the armor here is thickest.” She explained to both men, “If you let me piggy back onto a hard connection, I can force the doors to cycle.” Probably. Even if there was no discernable energy reading, she was sure that this Tony could figure out how to give the giant mechanisms a ‘jump start’.

Thick sickly orange lines pulsed through the walls, and Friday worried what exactly would happen once they breached the doors.

Tony rolled his eyes at the footsie comment. Of course when Tony had wanted to fight his way through, Justin had played the we-need-to-be-reasonable-adults-and-talk-it-out card. But the second Justin decided it was time to force their way through, well. Different story.

He didn't really have the time to be properly irritated, though, instead jetting after Justin and throwing repulsor blasts at at of the facsimiles along his way, glad his armor protected him from the gore of the all too corporeal carnage. At least until Not-Thor caught him a blow with not-Mjolnir that sent him spinning and buckled the armor plating over his ribs. He righted himself, ignored the sharp twinge of pain in his side, and caught up with Justin in the stairwell.

At the lab, Tony said to FRIDAY, "Do it. I'll hit the equipment with enough power to jump start the system for a couple minutes."

Justin really, really didn’t like holstering his weapon while there might be pursuit coming, but he didn’t have much choice here. Stowing the weapon, he yanked the connection cables out of his medical scanner, patching Friday into the systems of the lab. That done, he pulled the blaster out again, aiming it up the stairway and watching for any pursuit. Hopefully, the stone didn’t want to send something massively destructive like, oh say, Thor down where it might accidentally cause some damage to it or its host, but he wasn’t going to bet on it… and all things told, he was a sitting duck here while Friday worked. Lovely.

“So,” Justin said conversationally, “What do you think the odds are that we’ll go in there and they’ll be happy to see us and come out all quietly and happily?” He knew the answer: Pretty much nil, but it was something to get his mind off of the danger that might be coming up behind them. He eyed the damage to Tony’s armor, not able to do a proper scan of him since his scanner was occupied being Friday’s platform. “You going to be all right?” he asked, mentally re-ordering the fight that was probably going to happen inside the room. He was still unhurt… he’d take on Tony if they had to fight it out, Tony could handle Steve. That much had been proven already (unfortunately).

“Right.” If the AI could take a deep breath she would have in that second between Justin attaching the hardline and her code piggybacking over the surge of power from Tony’s suit.

The torerous groan of machinery covered the feedback filled scream as Friday fought...well herself. Backed by the Stone and on a different layer of power than the AI dependent on Justin’s scanner for her processing power…

Well Friday had a choice, fight or complete the mission.

The digital redheaded avatar dove away from the grasping tentacles of her other self aiming for the door controls, riding the current from Tony.

The massive Amory doors slid open.

Inside was a frozen tableau; Friday and Tadashi frozen mid battle holograms flicking with unholy Orange light. Steve crumpled on the couch draped over...well what appeared to be Tony Stark, or at least you had to assume that’s who it was beneath the twisted fissures of Orange power sliced over his face and body.

Tony stood behind Justin as he patched into the system, keeping repulsors trained on the stairway behind them. At the same the he used Extremis to patch in remotely and power the system from his own armor.

"The odds?" Tony echoed, smiling faintly in his helmet because if nothing else Justin did seem to share his brand of humor. "I thought this was a social call."

His smile faded as he caught Justin eying his armor. His side was still aching sharply and he had enough experience in the area to guess he'd probably cracked a rib or two. But Extremis would take care of it in a few days and it wasn't like it was going to slow him down. So he only lied, "Fine. Surface damage. Hammering out the plating later is going to be a pain, though."

Then the doors were sliding open, and every other concern slid to the back of Tony's mind.

"Get Steve out of here," Tony ordered Justin, forgetting for a moment that he would probably do the opposite just to be contrary. "I'll handle Stark. Get him to safety and come back if you can."

There were so many things wrong with what Tony was saying that Justin didn't know where to start. For one thing (okay, he supposed that was a place to start), Friday didn't seem to be in his system anymore. Problem being, when you mixed the tech in this room with the not-really-tech of the Soul Stone, he didn't know where to start trying to fix things here.

Well, he supposed that by trying to do what Tony said was a good start.

"Friday! Ah, dammit... Friday! Where are you and what do you need me to do!" Maybe, just maybe, she was in a system where she could respond, tell him some code to enter somewhere or some wire to cut to make her job easier and let her back into the relative safety of his medical scanner. In the meantime, he flew across the room toward the collapsed Avengers. He didn't go for Steve, though... first he went for the shield laying nearby. If Steve was out, he'd need that shield to keep them protected while they flew out. If Steve wasn't out, he'd need to make sure that Steve didn't have his best weapon to do whatever the Soul Stone told him to do to stop them from saving them. His next moves were clear enough: Put the shield on, then grab Steve off of Tony.

“Language!”

”Tony, I--”

”--love you more than anything in the world, past or present.” One moment, Steve was answering Tony, giving the only answer the super soldier could think to give that was any sort of appropriate, that came anywhere near to expressing his feelings. Then, right in the middle of everything, the world shifted and changed, going from the pretty near-perfect world he’d been in to… A different Tony standing over him and his Tony, and Justin trying to make off with his shield. ”You know, taking things that don’t belong to you isn’t very nice.” It was, of course, the Captain America voice, the tone the ‘I’m Very Disappointed In You’ one that he usually reserved for criminals, villains, and when Tony and Bruce made an evil super-bot without telling anyone else. For a moment, he sounded more amused than upset.

He couldn’t say exactly why his perception of the scene changed the way it did. At first, it was almost homey; Steve expected Clint to come through the door, snickering and telling Justin he was only kidding, he didn’t mean to actually take the shield. He expected… And then he expected Other Tony to unleash a blast of repulsor energy on him and Justin to smack him with the shield and Steve’s expression changed to one of betrayal and outrage. “Why?” Behind the stronger surface emotions, there was something else, an ache, a pain. The loss of that almost-perfect, happy life, being dragged away from so much good, so much happiness, to wake up to what appeared to be a fight? It ached deep in Steve’s core. But at least Tony was okay. Steve glanced to his Tony, gave a small, soft smile, and then turned a frown back on Justin, ”Hand it on over now, or we’re going to have a bit of a problem here.” He didn’t specify what the problem would be, but his body language made it clear enough what he meant.

“That’s not going away anytime soon.”

FRIDAY wasn't responding to Justin, which...wasn't good. Tony reached out for her with Extremis, but came up blank. The Tower was isolating her, or blocking him. Either way, it wasn't good. He watched Justin fly over to Steve and go for his shield.

Which, honestly, he should have known was a mistake. Steve had always had a sixth sense for that thing. And then he watched Steve's expression shift from fond bemusement to the true anger he'd come to know oh so well over the last year. He didn't miss the fond smile at the other Tony, either. Obviously, the stone still had Steve deep in its thrall.

Which was a shame, because Tony really, really didn't want to have to fight another Steve Rogers.

"It doesn't have to go this way, Cap," Tony said in a low voice, moving closer. "Nobody's getting hurt here. The building's falling down and we have to get you out of here. Your Tony's gonna be just fine."

God damn it, Tony. There were so many ways that this could be handled, and making it clear that there were sides here (and that Cap wasn't on theirs) probably wasn't the best one to pick. It didn't help that the way he said it was so damned much like his self-righteous 'stand down and no one gets hurt' crap that he spouted off during the Registration bullshit, either. What could he do to save this?

"Shut up, Tony," Justin said, flipping the shield in his hand and then tossing it back to Steve. In the end, he had to choose between staying true to what he always had faith in and sticking to Tony's lead... and what he'd always had faith in was that you could trust Steve Rogers to not let you down. "We've got to get out of here. We've got to get both of you out of here, and there's probably still resistance on the way up. If you're awake now, you can work the shield a hell of a lot better than I could have."

It both helped show that everything was all right and satisfied his curiosity, so Justin fired up his medical scanner, spreading the scanner display in the air over better-Tony, checking his vitals, his brain activity, any odd signs that Justin knew would be because of the damn Soul Stone... hell, maybe he'd get some clue from this why Friday wasn't talking, but he wasn't going to get his hopes up. "Friday? Come on, tell me where to plug in so you can download again, don't leave us hanging. Tony, do you have any clue what's going on? That damn stone shouldn't be able to screw with electronics."

Friday...well the version of her that had been uploaded from Justin’s scanner was at the moment quite...busy.

From the second she had rejoined the network via the hardline connection she had been under assault...from herself. Apparently Tony had under the influence of the Stone corrupted her Tower persona into something far more...well feral than Friday herself would have ever described her coding.

The burned husk of TADASHI lay discarded where FRIDAY had won her first battle, bloodied now she attacked her copy. And Friday didn’t have access to the processing power that her main tower counterpart took full advantage of.

*Static* “-rupted!” *static*

Feedback and static bookended the truncated phrase as Friday tried to explain what she was doing, could she retreat into Justin's scanner? Possibly. Would FRIDAY follow? Probably. Did she need to distract the AI before someone had the smart idea to wake up the Armory? Definitely.

Tony, the host to the soul stone, was...not good. He wasn’t dying, the stone wouldn’t let him die, but he was no longer aware of anything beyond what the stone was showing him.
