The Soul yes. But who said it was attuned to a benevolent one? Soul was selfish, greedy, raw the absolute ID of humanity. All want, desire, hungry, grasping.

No Tony Stark had not made the sacrifices necessary to control the Stone, but the two had been connected together, forced into a bond that neither wished for, yet one the Stone was determined to make the most of now that it finally had the last pieces to its completion, to own Tony Stark completely.

Scott’s head vanished in a welter of blood and bone, vaporizing with all the realism of an unarmored skull exposed to a direct hit. Friday was rather glad she wasn’t human to be subjected to the smell and feel of blood and viscera in the air...and splattered over exposed skin.

Friday was the odd girl out, watching the two Avengers from a universe not her own bob, weave and now that their goal was clear, frankly decimate the soul stone’s projections. There was something wonderful, awe inspiring, and dreadful watching the elegant ballet of destruction the two laid out against their fellows.

Even trying to avoid battle left scars on the building, and the Stone’s projections had no such compunctions, leveling whole floors in their attempts to stop the pair.

“I am reading two humans.” Friday reported at last, the prolonged battle had left its marks on both men, yet they were now at the lab. “The Lab doubles as the Armory, the armor here is thickest.” She explained to both men, “If you let me piggy back onto a hard connection, I can force the doors to cycle.” Probably. Even if there was no discernable energy reading, she was sure that this Tony could figure out how to give the giant mechanisms a ‘jump start’.

Thick sickly orange lines pulsed through the walls, and Friday worried what exactly would happen once they breached the doors.

Tony rolled his eyes at the footsie comment. Of course when Tony had wanted to fight his way through, Justin had played the we-need-to-be-reasonable-adults-and-talk-it-out card. But the second Justin decided it was time to force their way through, well. Different story.

He didn't really have the time to be properly irritated, though, instead jetting after Justin and throwing repulsor blasts at at of the facsimiles along his way, glad his armor protected him from the gore of the all too corporeal carnage. At least until Not-Thor caught him a blow with not-Mjolnir that sent him spinning and buckled the armor plating over his ribs. He righted himself, ignored the sharp twinge of pain in his side, and caught up with Justin in the stairwell.

At the lab, Tony said to FRIDAY, "Do it. I'll hit the equipment with enough power to jump start the system for a couple minutes."

Justin really, really didn’t like holstering his weapon while there might be pursuit coming, but he didn’t have much choice here. Stowing the weapon, he yanked the connection cables out of his medical scanner, patching Friday into the systems of the lab. That done, he pulled the blaster out again, aiming it up the stairway and watching for any pursuit. Hopefully, the stone didn’t want to send something massively destructive like, oh say, Thor down where it might accidentally cause some damage to it or its host, but he wasn’t going to bet on it… and all things told, he was a sitting duck here while Friday worked. Lovely.

“So,” Justin said conversationally, “What do you think the odds are that we’ll go in there and they’ll be happy to see us and come out all quietly and happily?” He knew the answer: Pretty much nil, but it was something to get his mind off of the danger that might be coming up behind them. He eyed the damage to Tony’s armor, not able to do a proper scan of him since his scanner was occupied being Friday’s platform. “You going to be all right?” he asked, mentally re-ordering the fight that was probably going to happen inside the room. He was still unhurt… he’d take on Tony if they had to fight it out, Tony could handle Steve. That much had been proven already (unfortunately).

“Right.” If the AI could take a deep breath she would have in that second between Justin attaching the hardline and her code piggybacking over the surge of power from Tony’s suit.

The torerous groan of machinery covered the feedback filled scream as Friday fought...well herself. Backed by the Stone and on a different layer of power than the AI dependent on Justin’s scanner for her processing power…

Well Friday had a choice, fight or complete the mission.

The digital redheaded avatar dove away from the grasping tentacles of her other self aiming for the door controls, riding the current from Tony.

The massive Amory doors slid open.

Inside was a frozen tableau; Friday and Tadashi frozen mid battle holograms flicking with unholy Orange light. Steve crumpled on the couch draped over...well what appeared to be Tony Stark, or at least you had to assume that’s who it was beneath the twisted fissures of Orange power sliced over his face and body.

Tony stood behind Justin as he patched into the system, keeping repulsors trained on the stairway behind them. At the same the he used Extremis to patch in remotely and power the system from his own armor.

"The odds?" Tony echoed, smiling faintly in his helmet because if nothing else Justin did seem to share his brand of humor. "I thought this was a social call."

His smile faded as he caught Justin eying his armor. His side was still aching sharply and he had enough experience in the area to guess he'd probably cracked a rib or two. But Extremis would take care of it in a few days and it wasn't like it was going to slow him down. So he only lied, "Fine. Surface damage. Hammering out the plating later is going to be a pain, though."

Then the doors were sliding open, and every other concern slid to the back of Tony's mind.

"Get Steve out of here," Tony ordered Justin, forgetting for a moment that he would probably do the opposite just to be contrary. "I'll handle Stark. Get him to safety and come back if you can."

There were so many things wrong with what Tony was saying that Justin didn't know where to start. For one thing (okay, he supposed that was a place to start), Friday didn't seem to be in his system anymore. Problem being, when you mixed the tech in this room with the not-really-tech of the Soul Stone, he didn't know where to start trying to fix things here.

Well, he supposed that by trying to do what Tony said was a good start.

"Friday! Ah, dammit... Friday! Where are you and what do you need me to do!" Maybe, just maybe, she was in a system where she could respond, tell him some code to enter somewhere or some wire to cut to make her job easier and let her back into the relative safety of his medical scanner. In the meantime, he flew across the room toward the collapsed Avengers. He didn't go for Steve, though... first he went for the shield laying nearby. If Steve was out, he'd need that shield to keep them protected while they flew out. If Steve wasn't out, he'd need to make sure that Steve didn't have his best weapon to do whatever the Soul Stone told him to do to stop them from saving them. His next moves were clear enough: Put the shield on, then grab Steve off of Tony.

”Tony, I--”

”--love you more than anything in the world, past or present.” One moment, Steve was answering Tony, giving the only answer the super soldier could think to give that was any sort of appropriate, that came anywhere near to expressing his feelings. Then, right in the middle of everything, the world shifted and changed, going from the pretty near-perfect world he’d been in to… A different Tony standing over him and his Tony, and Justin trying to make off with his shield. ”You know, taking things that don’t belong to you isn’t very nice.” It was, of course, the Captain America voice, the tone the ‘I’m Very Disappointed In You’ one that he usually reserved for criminals, villains, and when Tony and Bruce made an evil super-bot without telling anyone else. For a moment, he sounded more amused than upset.

He couldn’t say exactly why his perception of the scene changed the way it did. At first, it was almost homey; Steve expected Clint to come through the door, snickering and telling Justin he was only kidding, he didn’t mean to actually take the shield. He expected… And then he expected Other Tony to unleash a blast of repulsor energy on him and Justin to smack him with the shield and Steve’s expression changed to one of betrayal and outrage. “Why?” Behind the stronger surface emotions, there was something else, an ache, a pain. The loss of that almost-perfect, happy life, being dragged away from so much good, so much happiness, to wake up to what appeared to be a fight? It ached deep in Steve’s core. But at least Tony was okay. Steve glanced to his Tony, gave a small, soft smile, and then turned a frown back on Justin, ”Hand it on over now, or we’re going to have a bit of a problem here.” He didn’t specify what the problem would be, but his body language made it clear enough what he meant.

“That’s not going away anytime soon.”

FRIDAY wasn't responding to Justin, which...wasn't good. Tony reached out for her with Extremis, but came up blank. The Tower was isolating her, or blocking him. Either way, it wasn't good. He watched Justin fly over to Steve and go for his shield.

Which, honestly, he should have known was a mistake. Steve had always had a sixth sense for that thing. And then he watched Steve's expression shift from fond bemusement to the true anger he'd come to know oh so well over the last year. He didn't miss the fond smile at the other Tony, either. Obviously, the stone still had Steve deep in its thrall.

Which was a shame, because Tony really, really didn't want to have to fight another Steve Rogers.

"It doesn't have to go this way, Cap," Tony said in a low voice, moving closer. "Nobody's getting hurt here. The building's falling down and we have to get you out of here. Your Tony's gonna be just fine."

God damn it, Tony. There were so many ways that this could be handled, and making it clear that there were sides here (and that Cap wasn't on theirs) probably wasn't the best one to pick. It didn't help that the way he said it was so damned much like his self-righteous 'stand down and no one gets hurt' crap that he spouted off during the Registration bullshit, either. What could he do to save this?

"Shut up, Tony," Justin said, flipping the shield in his hand and then tossing it back to Steve. In the end, he had to choose between staying true to what he always had faith in and sticking to Tony's lead... and what he'd always had faith in was that you could trust Steve Rogers to not let you down. "We've got to get out of here. We've got to get both of you out of here, and there's probably still resistance on the way up. If you're awake now, you can work the shield a hell of a lot better than I could have."

It both helped show that everything was all right and satisfied his curiosity, so Justin fired up his medical scanner, spreading the scanner display in the air over better-Tony, checking his vitals, his brain activity, any odd signs that Justin knew would be because of the damn Soul Stone... hell, maybe he'd get some clue from this why Friday wasn't talking, but he wasn't going to get his hopes up. "Friday? Come on, tell me where to plug in so you can download again, don't leave us hanging. Tony, do you have any clue what's going on? That damn stone shouldn't be able to screw with electronics."

Friday...well the version of her that had been uploaded from Justin’s scanner was at the moment quite...busy.

From the second she had rejoined the network via the hardline connection she had been under assault...from herself. Apparently Tony had under the influence of the Stone corrupted her Tower persona into something far more...well feral than Friday herself would have ever described her coding.

The burned husk of TADASHI lay discarded where FRIDAY had won her first battle, bloodied now she attacked her copy. And Friday didn’t have access to the processing power that her main tower counterpart took full advantage of.

*Static* “-rupted!” *static*

Feedback and static bookended the truncated phrase as Friday tried to explain what she was doing, could she retreat into Justin's scanner? Possibly. Would FRIDAY follow? Probably. Did she need to distract the AI before someone had the smart idea to wake up the Armory? Definitely.

Tony, the host to the soul stone, was...not good. He wasn’t dying, the stone wouldn’t let him die, but he was no longer aware of anything beyond what the stone was showing him.

Sixth sense or just the Stone waking him to protect itself, Steve opened his eyes to see Justin reaching for his shield, a shield that he had worked hard to earn again. A shield that he still wasn’t sure he deserved, but that he would use to protect Tony, the tower, himself… Friday and Tadashi. Against anyone who threatened. Now, he would like to think that Justin was here to help, but he wasn’t sure. Everything was a little bit fuzzy, something he wasn’t used to since he’d been a kid, and all he knew was that he’d come down here to help Tony, and he had no idea what had brought the other Tony and Justin here.

”It doesn’t have to go this way, Cap.”

Not his Tony said those words in a tone that had Steve’s hackles rising. It reminded him of the airport, backed into a corner, Tony standing there, trying to stop him, and all he wanted to do was help people… He had attacked then. Now, he readied his shield, frowning at the other Tony, ready to protect his Tony and himself. Once again, he and a Tony Stark were on opposite sides of something, it seemed. But he was on the same side as his Tony, and that counted for something. It counted for a whole lot, actually. ”You know, I remember another time that I stood facing off with another Tony Stark telling me it didn’t have to be a fight…” Steve grimaced, ”That didn’t go so well for him. So why don’t you just take a step back, and reconsider your side of things, Stark?”

Catching the shield when Justin tossed it to him, Steve gave the man a long once-over before nodding curtly to him. Justin had helped Tony once, when he’d been in danger, needing surgery. Dying. The two hadn’t always gotten along, (no one always got along with Tony, though) but Justin had always seemed to be the decent sort. The kind of person that Steve wouldn’t mind having his back as an Avenger. ”Wait…” he addressed his question to Justin and Tony both, ”Why would there be resistance? And why is Tony unconscious, we were just…”

They had just been… Had it just been a dream?? Steve blinked, frowned with what could only be pain and sorrow, and then took in a deep, steadying breath, ”Why is the tower collapsing? It was fine when I came in to see Tony. I… I came down here to help him…” He just wasn’t sure why Tony had needed help anymore… Stone? The soul stone... "Friday!" Friday's interrupted voice got Steve into gear, "They were fighting. Friday, you and Tadashi need to get out of here. We need to move." Steve slapped his shield onto his back and then moved to gently, carefully, pick Tony up.

“That’s not going away anytime soon.”

Tony had tried to go the friendly route, reassure Steve that they weren't there to hurt him or the other Tony, which he'd seemed to think they were. All he got from Justin was a "shut up" followed by what was almost the same set of reassurances the same plan. And Steve had done almost the same, except with more righteous indignation and a barely-veiled threat.

Whatever. Over the year of fighting he'd gotten used to his words being twisted, his motivations cast in doubt, even Steve's face (his Steve) wearing that exact expression. He didn't know why he'd expected this to go any differently.

Tony answered Justin's question in clipped tones, resisting the urge to snark at him out of pure principle. "Stone's corrupted the Tower's systems, as you can see. FRIDAY automatically connects to the main system. All the AIs should." FRIDAY's voice came over the speaker for a brief second and he added, "She's fighting."

Then he turned--a little too quickly, as his ribs protested painfully--then said to Steve as he picked up Tony, "Reconsider this. The soul stone that's sitting in my less attractive twin's chest is trying to bring the Tower down on our heads to it can have its way with you. There are several dozen very solid ghosts on their way down here to stop us from getting you out. So, we have to move."

And... well, what could he do now? Tony didn't seem concerned... okay, no. That wasn't fair, Tony was laying the situation out and probably felt as out of his depth as Justin did in the situation. If it was a purely technological situation, Tony could have dealt with it. But the fact that this was magic (or magic-ish) combined with technology threw all the rules out the window, now, didn't it?

Justin squeezed his eyes shut, forcing all of the elements of the situation into separate areas of his mind. First, there was the problem of getting Tony and Steve out of there. Second, there was the problem of getting Friday out of there. Third, there was the problem of the goddamned soul stone. The first one, they could probably handle, or at least the solution was fairly straightforward. The third one, he was sure that he could handle, in the form of getting it the fuck out of Tony. The second one, though, was holding him back. He didn't want to rush out of here, because he didn't know what it would do to Friday. This place was coming down, as Tony said, and the soul stone was keeping them from getting her out of there.

On the other hand... if they took care of the soul stone, would that de-corrupt the system? Then Tony could come set things right, if Friday would even need that sort of help with the system back in its more normal state. She could re-establish control of the tower, she could leave the tower again... And when you got down to it, it was really the only part of this problem that Justin had any sort of control over. He was the one who had to get that stone out of Tony and fix his heart. The only thing he could do here was to stand by the terminal and shout at it like a complete idiot... and, by waiting, probably let them all die in the process. No... Friday wouldn't thank him for that, now, would she?

"Tony, if you can't do anything to the system, take your sorta-twin and let's get out of here. Steve, you're with me. We'll fly out fast and hard... so keep that shield ready and try not to let anything kill me on the way out. We get out, we save Tony, and... we hope that that sets this place back to normal." He paused, looking around the room. "If there's anything that looks like an emergency escape hatch instead of going back up the stairs, now would be a good time to find it."

The Stone had tried to be nice, it had offered a way out for everyone, too bad noone had taken it up on it. So now it used the last card in its inventory.

Tony Stark opened burning orange eyes, sliding to his feet with inhuman grace, “Couldn’t just leave us alone could you? Really? What were we hurting? Just because YOU can’t be happy with your Steve you fuck me an mine up?” Now see Tony under the Stone hadn’t been completely useless, no what he’d done over the last few weeks was create a whole new technology.

The nanties buried under his skin came to life in response to his mental command forming and firing a repulsor at Justin, the suit climbed up his skin encasing him entirely...except his helmet was clear, allowing his expression of rage to be clearly visible. “So get OUT!”

Steve didn’t feel as though anyone had gone the ‘friendly’ route. He’d woken to Justin attempting to take his shield (Tony’s shield, but the genius had...given? Lent? It to him.) and the other Tony was telling him this didn’t have to be a fight, but it sure felt like the man expected it to be one. And the only time Tony actually expected them to fight was when they were going to be at odds. It didn’t make his request to reconsider particularly inviting, that was for sure. “Damn it, Tony,” the words weren’t meant for the unconscious man he had just been collapsed with, but for the one standing here, trying to disparage someone Steve loved, attacking them, again. “Stop it, just… Stop. I know you can be kind, so just.. Try that.”

He looked over at Justin. The man had returned his shield, so there was that. They said the building was going to come down, that this was the doing of the soul stone, but… Why? Sure, Tony was sleeping, but…

Sleeping. Steve closed his eyes for a moment, his face stone as he considered. He had been asleep; it had all been a dream. Just a dream. One given by the soul stone, if he was understanding the situation right. Looking over at the unconscious Tony, wondering what had been so terrible about that dream, why he couldn’t have just been allowed to keeping dreaming? He didn’t have time to grieve the loss of that perfect life, one he would have given so much to have, because the building was going to come down around them if they stayed. “Okay, let’s go.”

And then Tony was awake, and… “Tony.” The word left his lips before he could stop it, joy singing through his heart to know that Tony was awake, that he’d be… Steve blinked at the words that Tony spoke, so angry, and while Tony had always had a leonine grace, this was… Not right. “Tony?” Steve was in motion even before the repulsor went off; he saw the look on Tony’s face, saw the suit beginning to form, and even though Steve didn’t know about the nanites, he knew Tony, knew that this wouldn’t be good. He darted over, a streak of motion, bringing the shield up to protect both himself and Justin from the repulsor, ”They just want to get us out of here, Tony - the building’s coming down. We can still...have that life.” A dream, but a good one… God, Steve wished he didn’t realize it had been a dream, but this Tony… He wasn’t the Tony that Steve had been with on the red carpet.

“That’s not going away anytime soon.”

For once, nothing that had come out of Justin’s mouth made Tony want to roll his eyes. He wasn’t especially keen on leaving Friday in the corrupted systems, but there was no circumventing the stone’s power over her, not with the resources they had here. Getting out was, as far as he could see it, their best option. He answered, however, with a frown. “Emergency hatches are locked into the main operating system. Wouldn’t recommend going that way while the Tower’s still compromised, because if you get stuck I can’t override it.”

He added to Steve, “I reserve kind for people who are not being so stubborn they’re going to get us all killed. You can berate me later. We have to move.”

Then he spun around as the other Tony rose on his other side, eyes glaring orange as he spouted bullshit about Tony and Steve that made Tony’s expression shutter immediately, the familiar pain of grief lancing through him. “This has nothing to do with me or him. Get over yourself,” he bit out.

Everything else happened very fast. He could see the nanites forming, knew exactly what the other Tony was doing, but at the same time Steve was moving to protect Justin and it might not’ve been his Steve but he wasn’t so different that Tony didn’t know how to fight opposite him in battle. As Steve went on the defensive, deflecting the repulsor beam, Tony threw himself forward, pushing between the other Tony and the others and firing his own repulsors straight at the other Tony’s chest. At the same time he reached out with Extremis for the other Tony’s armor, assaulting the layers upon layers of encrypted code. He doubted he could break past it, not when the stone’s magic was supporting the firewall, but at the very least he might be able to distract the other Tony long enough for Justin to get Steve out.

“Go!” he yelled, feeling blood trickle out of his nose and down into his beard. “Justin, get Cap out of here, I’ve got him!”

Steve, Justin knew, could defend himself. There wasn't a repulsor built yet that could blast through Steve's shield, and Steve was the more obvious target anyway. It was somewhat insulting, but it was true, when Steve and Tony were there, Justin tended to get overlooked by the big bads. That did, occasionally, work in his favor, naturally. At the moment, with Steve and his doppleganger there, Justin doubted he'd really even register on Tony's radar.

And so Justin darted to the side, gliding through the air to finish the circle around better-Tony, between Steve and real-Tony. He spun as he went, keeping his back to Tony, knowing damned well that if he did fire at him, the cape would protect him from the worst of the blast. He rolled in the air, bringing up the wrist crossbow and launching taser darts at Tony's back, aiming low to where the nanites hadn't spread the armor yet. Once that armor was up... well, Justin knew his usefulness would be rapidly waning at that point.

When the charge in the taser round was spent, Justin ejected the cartridge without bothering to pull the darts out. Getting out sounded good, but... where? "I thought you said that way was bad," he called back over the sounds of the close-quarters battle. Drawing his blaster out, he fired off a couple rounds, trying to stay behind Tony, waiting to dart in and grab him if he had to. "You grab Steve and get out, I'll be right behind you! You know the best way out!" He would, of course, wrestle Tony out if he had to, using his cape to try to overpower his suit's flight. He didn't think that was necessary, though... once they dragged out Steve, they'd probably have to hit high speed to keep Tony from catching them.

Justin wasn’t wrong; he was not really a threat. At least that the stone was more focused on the other Tony and Steve especially once Tony started to attack him via the armor.

“No we can’t!” Tony snarled, “Its GONE thanks to THEM-” a few thousand volts of electricity coursed from where Justin’s darts had connected with his unprotected ass. There was an absolute second of confusion where the stone had not expected the attack, and needed SOMETHING of Tony to work THROUGH that Friday jumped on, skipping from the main frame into the newest half formed armor

It was HER controlling the suit’s hand to rip out the stone, Arc reactor and all and hurl it to the side. “3 Minutes!” Came the frantic irish brough from the speakers; “I don't have control of anything! Get OUT!” she screamed at the men. “150 seconds.” She started to count down the number of seconds Tony had before his heart was shredded as so much tissue paper.

“Language!”

Steve wanted so much to reach up and take a moment to scrub his face with the heel of his hand; he felt like he was wading through waist deep water; his head felt foggy and he knew they didn’t have time for him to stop and collect himself. “I don’t want to berate you, Tony.” He wanted to lie down. He wanted to have a very long talk with Tadashi about what that dream had meant. He wanted to rest and then have a very long, very hard spar with his AI friend. He wanted to lay back down and go back to that dream more than anything else, though. That perfect, happy life.

It was a good thing that Steve Rogers knew that being happy, that getting what you wanted wasn’t something that was going to be in the cards for everyone. And apparently today, he was one of the ones that was going to have to go without. “We might not be able to recreate that dream, Tony, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have that sort of life.”

Justin tasered Tony and… And it worked. The moment that Tony started to drop, Steve was moving forward, concern on his face and in his eyes, painting his every action and expression, making sure Tony didn’t just fall to the floor in a heap.

And then Friday was ripping Tony’s reactor (his heart) out of his chest, ”Tony! Friday…” Get out, she said, and the tone she used… Three minutes… Steve scooped Tony up without any hesitation, heading the way the other two had entered, head down, grim faced, his eyes lit with determination. He would get Tony out of here. ”Justin, Tony, get whatever you need to help him and follow me out. Let’s go, we’re on the clock.” He left no room for objections; they may have come to rescue him and Tony, but Steve wasn’t going to sit down here while Tony died. Steve moved forward; body hunched over and around Tony, protecting him as the soldier plowed through the building. He stopped for nothing. ”Friday, tell me you have Tadashi with you…” The other AI was the only one not accounted for, after all…

“That’s not going away anytime soon.”

Through the effort of his assault on the stone’s power, it sounded like Justin’s words were coming through underwater, but Tony replied anyway. “It’s bad, but it’s better than this!” But of course Justin wouldn’t go along with his plan, nevermind that he had no idea what the other Tony or the stone would do once he let go with Extremis.

And then the point was moot because FRIDAY had reared up and taken over and ripped the other Tony’s arc reactor out.

Tony let go with Extremis, staggering and hitting a wall as a wave of dizziness crashed over him, then righted himself because really, any semblance of a plan they might have had had just gone out the window with FRIDAY’s move.

Then Steve was scooping up the other Tony’s limp body and heading for the exit, yelling for Tony and Justin to grab what they needed. Which was all well and good except that Tony had no idea what the other Tony used to run the arc reactor, since it was obviously different from any artificial heart he’d had before Extremis. Oh, yeah, and not-his-Steve was running headlong into a bunch of angry and very solid ghosts.

“Justin, I’ve got you covered,” he said, jetting up into the air and ignoring the brief swoop of vertigo. Whatever damage it’d done to him, he had been able to face off against the stone’s power, and if it tried to attack Justin through the Tower’s systems he knew he could do it again. “Get what you need, then we’re catching up with Cap and helping him bust out of here. Got it?”

Justin, being Justin, would probably just do whatever he wanted, but at least Tony would have him covered.
