Oh lookie he didn’t go splat.

Green surrounded him holding him til he was in easy foot reach of floor. The monster had thrashed his final death throes Safi caught the eye of the glow bug, nodding his thanks for the save.

The sudden armful of Chris wasn’t unexpected but- “we have to keep moving before something else happens.” The words didn’t stop him from rubbing the smaller mans back in soothing circles. “I’m ok. Your shield worked it’s ok.” He repeated over and over, shifting the smaller man under his arm to free his gun hand suiting words to actions he moved to the staircase glancing at the cowboy for confirmation.

“Glow bug?” Safi looked up the long stairwell considering the very hard time limit they are under- “Can you get us up there? Faster than is walking I think.” At the confirmation he helped open up a elevator shaft.

“Chris. I need you to pull together.” Safi’s turned to the other man trusting the glow bug to have their back for the ride up. “We don’t know what’s next or how belle is doing. I need you to be able to push the fear aside for right now.” He kept his voice low and private as much as one could hope that the others would politely ignore the moment.

“You can do this. I believe in you.” He squeezed his shoulders.

As the top of the shaft came closer Safi reorientation them so Chris was behind him again.

Queth cursed loudly and violently when the man's skin began to change colour. She should have known better- she had seen something about the hulk in the iron monger's mindscape. Instead she had disregarded it like someone on their first run. Frag, she knew her drek, and yet a couple month's away from her 'verse and she felt like an idiot again.

She pulled her sword out- confident she could cut him- though less confident about how long that may take. It was a bit of a relief to see the other woman loosing a deadly looking arrow, meant that Queth wouldn't have to try and hold on while she cut the angry man's head off.

She followed the rest of them, helping Safi force open the door on the elevator shift. She was about to ask how they were planning to get there- since she was confident in her ability to climb the shaft but not in other's ability to do the same- when a glowing light gave them some sort of platform and sent them all the way up.

Clearing her throat, she made a pointed notion at the door as the others got back in position.

Bucky vaguely wished to be sick when he realized who's neck he had just snapped. Certainly he had never met the man, but the way Steve spoke about Dr. Banner made Bucky think that this world had lost one if it's last great minds when he was subjected to this experimentation.

Of course, most of him was fighting off the desire to pale in fear as the jade giant began to attack them- neck swinging loosely with the lack of solid bone there. He had his gun at the ready but hell if he didn't want Steve's shield with him right then. The beast was capable of shrugging off tank fire- Bucky's gun wouldn't help.

He placed his hand on Lorelei's shoulder in a gesture of solidarity after she loosed her arrow. "You did the right thing. His suffering is over now." He offered softly, waiting to see if she needed a moment before going with her to where the elevator shaft had been opened.

At the top of the shaft, there was a door. Bucky didn't bother waiting- the turtle said this was where to go so Nat must be back there. He attempted to kick the door down. (When that failed, he switched to using his metal arm to shoulder check it.)

This had been a mess so far, through no part of their own. Come into the dying world, fight through the zombie Iron Men, don’t kill the last refugees of the world, fight the ancient Hulk… Well, once he put it to words, it actually didn’t seem that far off from any normal mission. Hell, the Blackest Night had been a hell of a lot worse than this (though disturbingly similar to parts). Now, though, they were in a quiet tower. “Ring,” he said quietly, the unnatural silence of the world getting to him a bit, like one giant funeral that you didn’t dare speak up in, “Locate Kailani.” She would be with the others, after all, it stood to reason, and his ring knew her by now. The answer came immediately, and he looked up at the ceiling pointlessly. Over a hundred stories up… yikes.

“Yeah, let’s take a shortcut here,” he said, agreeing (somewhat grudgingly) with Safi. He could have yanked the doors off himself, but he let Safi and his buddy handle it so they could feel like they were contributing, then he seized the ruined elevator car behind them with his ring, crushed it into a ball of twisted metal that he could fit through the door, and threw it out into the street. Then, the rest of them gathered in a bubble of emerald light trailing behind him from his ring, he rocketed up the elevator shaft.

The door that they were looking for was easy enough to find. The entire floor was the ruin of a corporate office, and most of the rooms were just glass walls that had long since been crushed to splinters. The last room, though, was reinforced concrete and steel, and the door to it was some kind of armored, no-handle job. The guy with the metal arm… Barnes? He really needed to pay attention to some of the other people in Kai’s world sometime, he recognized him a bit at least, he thought that was the name. Anyway, he kicked the door, which resulted in… well, nothing. When he started trying to force it by hand, Jake stepped up to help, blasting it from the other side of the frame with his rings, the green light and cyborg strength sending it (eventually) crashing into the room.

The women seemed unharmed, though they were chained up and naked. He let out a cry of relief as he hurried into the room with the others, taking aim at Kai’s shackles and snapping them off. There was some weird crystal that he thought at first was one of hers tapping her on the head, but he caught that and pinned it to the wall with another bubble of green energy. “Thank God,” he said, not sure if it was what you did for your kidnapped… whatever she was to him, but he hugged her anyway, giving her a quick scan while he did to make sure she really wasn’t hurt. “You okay? We hurried as much as we could. Ring, make her decent.” The outfit that the ring created was simple, but it’d serve, and it beat being naked, right?

There was one other problem, though. Now that they were there, with the prisoners, and they didn’t have any more reason to be in this world, Jake tried to recreate his little link-to-the-portal trick… and it didn’t work. Oh for fuck’s sake… What’s wrong, Ring?

Spatial anomaly no longer present.

WHAT!? The portal can’t be gone!

Spatial anomaly no longer present.

“Ah… guys? New problem. Our portal isn’t there anymore.”

Kai had tried a few more times to free herself- each attempt tiring her further. So she hadn't fully processed the thumping against the door until she saw the green light seep in below the door- which gave her a new surge of adrenaline as she worked hard not to get her hopes up. Just a trick of the light she told herself. Even if it weren't, she knew there were plenty of green things that were not good things to have coming towards you and she should know better- but so help her if her heart wasn't in her throat. Kai could distinctly picture Jake behind the door- and she knew that despite her best efforts, she would be crushed if someone or something else came through the door.

Her smile was so wide upon his entrance that it genuinely hurt a little bit (though to be fair, her face was still healing, and most movement hurt a little.) She fell into his arms with relief, nearly sobbing now that she was processing everything. And perhaps because Jake had come for her- not just out of obligation, because in a room with three people to be released- he had released her and then held her instead of freeing the others.

"I'll be okay." She whispered as she held him and shook slightly now that the fear and helplessness were washing away. Kai was embarrassed as hell as well-but she was just so grateful to be in his arms that she didn't care.

She perked up a little at the announcement from Jake. She bit back annoyance even though her mouth formed words anyways. "Kanapapiki" She growled- before grasping Jake's hands and pulling them off of her.

For a brief moment it occurred to Kai that it might seem to him that she was pushing him off- but in reality she was trying to force his sleeves up. Once she had some skin available to her, all but the first of her pohakus layered on the visible flesh of Jake's arms. "What about now?" She said- trying to hide how much more her body was shaking after her power up had transferred to him, now that it wasn't helping her regain her painfully low energy stores.

Bucky nodded gratefully at the green powered man as the door finally blew. He ran in, eyes scanning across the (admittedly beautiful) women to find Natasha. Once he located her wall, Bucky moved with expediency- even if he couldn't just magic the shackles off like the glowbug could. Still- there were benefits to having your arm replaced by an evil organization- since he just snapped the manacles directly off of the other assassin's wrists and ankles. The minute that was done, he shrugged off his jacket and laid it over her shoulders in the hopes she'd find it some form of comforting. He placed a hand on one shoulder, and managed to keep his eyes to her face as his brow furrowed slightly. He took a moment to pull his mask off so that his face would be theoretically less threatening.

"Are you alright Nat?" He offered softly, rubbing his thumb in circles while he waited for a reply- though his attention was abruptly snapped away when the glowbug announced that there was no portal anymore. He didn't move from his position in front of Nat even as he dropped his hand and self consciously shucked his shirt to offer to her. "Here Nat, that should be a little longer than the jacket. Though you can of course hold on to the jacket too." He added, to her alone, before turning to face the others, sticking his hands in his pockets in a faux form of casual.

"So- We don't have a way home- or we'll have to walk back to the portal?" Bucky asked, voice vaguely hopeful, though he was pretty confident it was the former of the two.

Of course Safi didn’t ‘go splat’. Christian would never have let that happen; he had worked hard and quickly to protect Safi, spending much of his stored magical energy in the process. But it had been worth it; Safi would be safe both for now as well as in the immediate future. Besides, Christian had enough energy left to cast more if he needed to. They’d be okay, he’d make sure of it.

Even in the midst of a panic attack, Christian had enough wherewithal to move to Safi in order to hug him, in part because, well, holy shit Safi had just almost died and that was a thing that Christian never, ever wanted to have happen again, but also because he needed the physical reassurance that yes, Safi was there, and that he was okay and that this was real, this was happening.

Keep moving. Christian didn’t comment at the words, but he frowned against Safi’s chest. Before something else happens. As in, before Safi decided to go find another nearly invincible creature to piss off and get himself backhanded halfway to the rapidly approaching moon… Because yes, Safi’s immediate response to the HULK was to climb up him and shoot him in the neck.

Seriously. How had this become his life?

He could remember back before, when his most serious, dangerous concern was how to separate himself from Camilla Espinosa without starting her to shrieking about how he didn’t like her and treated her like a little kid.

“Of course my shield worked.” Chris muttered quietly, not looking up at Safi, “It’s the spell I’ve practiced the most.” Because Safi. Because the man kept doing things like pissing off the Hulk and stepping into the line of fire when people were shooting at them.

”Chris. I need you to pull together. ...I need you to be able to push the fear aside for right now.”

The fear? Pull together?? Christian looked up at Safi, his mouth drawn down into a tight frown, his brows furrowed together and his eyes narrowed. Was Safi serious right now?! “I was afraid for you! You almost died!” The small man didn’t yell; the words came out in as angry a hiss as Safi would ever have heard come from him. Fondant didn’t upset him this much. Tense and defensive, Christian muttered, “It wasn’t me that went and pissed off the Hulk. It wasn’t me stepping out into full view of the people with guns…” Still, his back straightened a bit when Safi said he believed in him.

It was nice to hear. “I’m okay. As together as I can be. Just… Stop doing stuff like that.” It took a few moments, but Christian stood straighter, breathed deeper, and pulled himself back together, shoving aside all of his worry and fear and yes, his anger too, just for the moment. He put aside the knowledge that the Iron Mongers had once been people, that Bucky Barnes had snapped Bruce Banner’s neck, that Safi had gone flying the way he had, all of it, he put the memories aside along with the nausea that came with them. But even as he did all of that, he remained close to Safi, touching the larger man lightly, just a brush against his arm here, the slight shift of his fingers there, never anything solid, and never for long. Just silent reminders that he was there, that he was okay. They’d get through this.

He rode the elevator created by the green hero silently. When Barnes and Jacob took the door down, Christian stood back, letting them manhandle the door open. But the quiet meekness broke the moment he laid eyes on his sister. “Belle!” He rushed forward when he saw her, taking in the room, their surroundings, the other women, but not truly focusing on any of it. He wrapped her in a gentle but heartfelt hug briefly before letting her go and pulling out two thin pieces of copper wire, looping them and twisting them into twin lengths, each with a “cuff” at one end, representing the two manacles that held Belle to the wall. Then he took wire snips and cut them, breaking their far more sturdy counterparts as well.

He shrugged off the vest that Safi had put on him, and then his blazer, offering her first the jacket and then the vest. She needed it more than he did. “Are you hurt? Are you okay?” They were two different questions, both asked with concern and the fervent hope that the answers were no, and yes.

The disappearance of the portal bothered Christian less than it likely did the others. He was tired, but he wasn’t dead on his feet. Yet. He was getting there, and he knew it, but they were so close; he just needed to get them home. A temporary portal would do the trick, and then he could just curl up in bed with a thermos of soup and some good bread and call it a week. “I should be able to get us home…” He’d learned how to make a portal from John Constantine, and he had worked hard to learn more about them from Agatha. He could do this. He just needed a few moments to work it out and make it happen...

“Oh indeed, that portal is gone now. Well done.” Again, it was certain that the man hadn’t been there before, but perhaps they had missed him in the hallway in their excitement to get to the room their friends were kept in? It was possible… even if unlikely. “What would it need to be there for? There are no more humans born of this world left on it.” He smiled as he pointed at Lori, looking like he’d tweak her nose, he was so pleased with her. “You killed the last one. Congratulations! You know, I always thought I’d be the one to wipe out life on this planet for good, but no… officially? It was a little girl with a bow and arrow. I’ll have to do better next time.”

“So… I suppose that this is the point where you poor, stranded souls ask to make a deal with me? Unless you want to trust that magic works the same at the end of the world as it did where he comes from,” he said, nodding at Chris. “It’s up to you, but…” He winced, looking at a watch that he wasn’t really wearing. “Tick tock. We’re on a bit of a tight schedule. Any second now…” He smirked, making a little ‘explosion’ gesture with his hands, mouthing an excited “Boom!” as he did.

It was a shame that all eyes were on the sorcerer, because the old Gunslinger’s reflexes were sublime. In an instant his gun was in his hand, and no one even knew it until the shot rang out in the ancient boardroom. The sorcerer, though, simply vanished in the moment it took the hammer to fall on the revolver that was aimed at him, and the bullet passed straight through where his head had been, smashing through the wall behind it, nothing left of the man that had stood there but a fading, echoing laugh.

Virgil’s face was contorted into an expression so incongruous with his previously seen unshakable calm that it was almost unrecognizable: Furious loathing. “Marten Broadcloak! Walter O’Dim, Randal Flagg, whatever accursed name you call yourself!” he bellowed as he stepped into the doorway. “I’d call for you to stand and fight like a man, if you weren’t lower than the lowest rabid cur to ever walk creation!” He spat into the hallway and swore in the High Speech, still scowling as he turned back into the room, reloading the shot he’d fired from his gun. “He won’t have gone far. He can’t gloat at us if he runs, and beside… he needs a way out of here too. That’s how we’ll leave.” The sorcerer gone, the gunslinger’s expression and voice slid back into his usual mellow tones. He shrugged out of the long duster he wore, offering it to Belle (choosing her, in truth, by virtue of her being next to the door, but she did have the look of the one who was least comfortable being naked in mixed company.

“Any deal he’d offer us would have a knife hidden in it. There aren’t words for the crimes against creation that man has committed. I could tell tales of him, but there’s just no time for it,” Virgil said, when he finally led them out of the room. He knew where Marten would be. When you factored towers into it, there was only one place for the ruler of it to be, for the escape from it to be: At the very top. “Just let it be known that there’s not a man he ever called a friend he didn’t betray, no confidence he’s never broken. If I call my duty to keep creation from falling, then he’s my opposite, and even that relationship sickens me.” He pushed open the stairs, the trip up that last staircase being blessedly brief. “But he’s a powerful sorcerer. He knows secrets that even Gan has forgotten, has magic older than time, if he chooses to use it. There may not be a more dangerous man in all the universes than this one, and we have to try to kill him now.” At the top of the stairs was a door, and Virgil paused, looking back at the others to make sure they were ready before he opened it. “Cam-a-cammal, pria-toi, Gan delah,” he murmured under his breath as he pushed the door open, guns ready.

Whether this had been the original design of the room or not, now the room was a wide, open space, save for shelves of trophies that Marten had gathered along the walls. On the opposite wall was another doorway, this one filled with a portal. Between it and them, the Man in Black sat in a wide throne, smirking in amusement at them.

Queth was ready to start helping the boys when the door finally gave way. Entering quickly, she swept the room for surprises before focusing on the redheads. Somehow the brunette had acquired clothes, but the elf had brought shorts in the expectation that some of the woman would like to not worry about their modesty as they made their escape. The black widow she doubted would, though she unrolled a pair of black spandex from inside her arm to offer anyways.

Focusing on the one woman in the room that Queth did know personally was her next step- she stooped to snap the shackles that Chris had missed around Belle's ankles. Straightening, she offered her the pair of pyjama shorts Queth was carrying- nice and warm and everything. Even if some might consider the penguin pattern childish- so help her Queth didn't wear shorts. She was doing good for finding three pairs of shorts at all- let alone ones which could fit all four women. She gave a soft smile to the redhead.

"Sorry I would have brought tops, but last I checked, you're shaped like a gorgeous woman, where as I am almost literally a lamppost." Queth paused. "I also tried to take a page from your book and bring food for comfort, but we ran into some folks who needed it more." She added with a small grin, confident Belle would approve of the gesture.

The elf was content to wait for the human to answer her brother's questions, until an unfamiliar man appeared in the room. Flipping her attention, she moved automatically in front of the recently freed Belle to protect her as Queth's weapons once again slid home to her relevant hands. She had her shot lined up and finger pulling the trigger home when the man in black disappeared. The shot that was let off- by their sort of leader, missed it's mark so Queth loosed her grip, pulling back from the trigger and clicking the safety back on.

"I feel like I should apologize for automatically going for the high ex rounds but somehow I feel I made the right choice." She quipped, not bothering to replace the weapon in its proper place- instead listening to the explanation. With a sigh she emptied the clip into her hand, trading the high ex which could damage their way out, for piercing rounds.

Waiting beside Belle, Queth kept a watchful eye of the area as she put on her ramshackle pile of clothes. Then it was up the stairs and through the door at which point Queth immediately sent out three shots at the man sitting there.

Tears of helpless despair shifted into gasping breathless happy half hysterical giggles “oh ya sweetie.” She reached a hand out to cup Queaths cheek. Belle hugged her brother tightly, for just a moment basking in the idea that she was safe and that the worst fears were unfounded.

Penguin Pajama bottoms, trench coat, blazer and tac vest was a…look. Belle gladly took what was offered sheltering behind her brother and Queath, blushing with a mumbled ‘thank ya very much.’ At the older man who offered her the duster.

“No. An no.” Belle answered Chris’s questions with a watery broken little smile.

And than he returned and Belle vibrated with barely contained rage. “That’s what this whole thing was about wasn’t it? Who is it ya want? Who’s ya really after for that devil's bargain?”

She did not object to being defended Queath was a damn scary woman when she wanted to be(and a absolute teddy bear when she let herself feel).

Belle wholeheartedly agreed with the old gentleman, Martin wasn’t to be trusted. But if her brother couldn’t work his magic…

She just wished she knew who the bastard was after really.

The journey up to the penthouse was about as tense as it could be. And even clothed now Belle was still the most useless person there. A liability and she knew it.

While she appreciated the effort belle doubted the shots would do much.

Unfortunately.

Maarten made a sweeping motion with his hand and a familiar star-spangled shield, still dangling the skeletal arm that had died holding it, zipped across the room, intercepting the shots on the way. "Ah ah ah, manners, little girl," he chided Queth. "You all want to leave, now, don't you? Well, there's the door," he grinned, jerking his head to indicate behind him. "I'll even let you use it. All you need to do is kill him." Marten's gaze fixed directly on Virgil, that nasty smile not bothering to hide his malevolence. "It's not like you'd even be willing a real man, and you already did that with poor Bruce downstairs..."

Natalia had been ready to die, had accepted that this was the end for her existence, and other than Natasha's bitterness that her death would be useless, pointless and stupid, Natasha also accepted the inevitability. Black Widow agreed that hope was for children, and that the death was to be met with clear eyed calm, which would be easier if she could manage to ignore Natalia's stupid hope that maybe there was some sort of afterlife where she could find James.

Still, even Black Widow had felt a stir of hope when she heard the fight, and it was all Natalia could do not to weep when she saw the Winter Soldier's familiar mask. Bucky had come to save her, even if James couldn't. Which meant that while Black Widow was assessing the rescue team, and Natalia was trying not to cry, Natasha was in charge of the reunion.

Which meant that she grinned at Bucky and said "My hero. How can I ever repay you?" before she accepted the shirt, and handed back the jacket. Her personal modesty might be less than zero, but she knew that casual nudity bothered other people, so she took the shirt, and the shorts that Queth offered as well, pulling them on with brisk efficiency. Natasha had to admit, once it registered that Safi was one of the search party, that it was good to be dressed-encounters with former sex partners were usually less awkward if both of you were clothed. Thankfully he hadn't noticed her, Black Widow noted with approval, there would be plenty of time for personal bullcrap after they'd gotten out of the dying world.

Which was when everything went to hell.

And she didn't have a weapon.

That last part was easily fixed, one of the things laying in the room was a familiar gun. Very familiar, it was still in working order, and came to her hand like an old friend. She quickly checked the clip, and chambered a round, ready to fire at her former captor. He might have the shield, Natalia's reaction to seeing that was something Black Widow would ignore for now, but that didn't mean that he was invulnerable. "Like hell we will." she muttered in Russian, as she lined up and took a shot.

So. That had happened. Lori would be happy she never, ever had to face off with another Avenger again. Once was more than enough. Tiny Adorable Tony just about had a panic attack, or maybe he actually had a panic attack it was both adorable and worrisome. They still had to get out of here and apparently their portal home was gone.

Still, they had rescued the missing women, so at least they done what they come to do. Lorelei stood back while the others went to go free the people they had come for. she knew Natasha, but not this Natasha, this wasn't Aunt Nat, so while she was glad to see the woman was safe, she had no claim to her. instead, Lorelei focused on the fact that their portal home had disappeared and how they were going to now get back to Hub.

She still had her bow in hand when the man in Black reappeared. His taunts about Bruce were salt in a wound, but Lori didn't flinch. yes, she had killed Bruce Banner, but she had done so in mercy, not cold blood or ennui. She had shot that arrow at a man she loved, a man who had helped her with her homework and

And then the man disappeared, even as the old Gunslinger shot at him, even after his supposed to offer to bargain for a way home.

To be fair, that offer hadn’t gotten a very warm response. Still, Lori was content to take Virgil at his word; that any deal the man would have offered would have been unwise to take. He’d just felt wrong. Oily. She’d say he gave off the same sort of air that Loki did, but Loki had nothing on this guy.

She moved to climb the stairs with Virgil, considering the cowboy for a few long moments before she asked him quietly, “Why is it that half the stuff you say feels like things I should recognize?” She’d been a young teenager when her father had read the Dark Tower series with her, and unlike her father, Lori hadn’t gone crazy over them; oh, they’d been a great read, and she had liked the books well enough, but she’d been at the age where homework and (more often) handsome boys had stolen her attention. The thing she had shared with Clint Barton had been her love of shooting their bows, and they had gone to the range to do so together often. Archery had been their bond, and both had latched onto it.

The names Virgil had called out after the man in black, Marten Broadcloak, Walter O’Dim, Randal Flagg… They were familiar. And there was something about the guy that was...something...too.

They entered the penthouse and there sat the sorcerer. His words before, about killing Bruce, had hurt, but she hadn’t so much as blinked. Pain was part of life, and her family had prepared her for it as best as they could. Loss was inevitable. Bruce Banner would have forgiven her; this Bruce so old and ready for the end to finally come, and the Bruce Banner she had known nearly all of her life. His callousness regarding Hulk this time put her on edge. It grated against her and very nearly upset her calm. The shield though, that was too much, to see it, to see... “So you’re the troll guarding the bridge, are you?” Her voice was quiet, but it was sharp and tense. She hadn’t spoken until she had nocked an arrow in her bow, this one with a slender but electronic head on it, and in one smooth motion she drew and fired, letting the arrow fly through the air to embed itself in the throne next to Marten’s head.

Like her father, Lorelei Coulson Barton never missed. She always hit her mark, wherever it was, and this time was no different. The moment that it hit, the arrowhead emitted a high, piercing tone that dissipated in the air, rapidly losing its potency. Her Uncle had always been a genius, and when Lori had asked for something that would incapacitate an enemy without being lethal, or even requiring her to shoot someone, he had pulled this out of his brilliant mind. Based on an older technology that he had once been on the receiving end of, Tony Stark had made her a ‘sonic arrow’ (so sue her, she loved the Doctor and his screwdriver. She controlled the arrowhead from her bow as she did most of her arrows; as long as she kept the tone up… Well, he was human, she hoped, and he would be vulnerable to all the same things as other humans, she also hoped. Ideally, this would paralyze him. If nothing else, maybe it would slow him down.

“No one go too close to him.” Because the sonic arrow would affect anyone who got into range and didn’t wear earplugs. Which she didn’t exactly have ten sets of.

For a moment, Jake was irritated with everyone. When Kai batted his hands away, he was afraid that he’d pissed her off, or let her down, or… something but then she went and put her stones on him, which told him what he needed to know about this situation. Hell, Bucky’s question just echoed it: Apparently, this was his fault, or so they thought. “What? I- Stop that!” Hell, Kai could barely stand up, what was she doing trying to use her power on him!? “It’s not a range thing, I can tap a portal from orbit if I have to! The portal just isn’t there.. And my rings might be good, but I don’t know how to make a portal out of this dimension with them, if they even can do that.” Frankly, he was willing to bet they couldn’t. “Take those back,” he muttered to Kai, trying to free himself from her pohaku and get them back on her. “You’re about to collapse as it is, stop pushing it.” It was true, yes, but he wasn’t going to say it loud enough that everyone would take notice, right?

The journey up the stairs was spent carrying Kai (which he didn’t mind at all) and going over his options (which frustrated him). He’d confirmed that no, he couldn’t contact the corps, if they even existed in this universe (which, again, he was betting not). He had no idea where he’d take people if he booked it off of this planet. He knew of planets in his universe, but not this one, were the planets the same here? Thankfully, the cowboy said that there would be a way out, so he was going to just buy that for now.

The speech from Marten, though… yeah, they should have seen that coming, although why it was the cowboy he wanted dead, Jake wasn’t sure. Either way, that was not the way a Green Lantern dealt with his problems. He set Kai down as they listened to the ultimatum, glaring into the room as he did. “Keep the wall up for me, babe… gotta go do that hero thing again,” he muttered. Then, as Nat and Lori started shooting at him, Jake took to the air, flying into the room, hoping that maybe he could separate this prick from everyone long enough for them to book it to the portal.

Well, this was amusing, at least. They’d barely met the gunslinger, but they wouldn’t save their skins by killing him? “Well, if we’re going to be all noble about this,” he said, catching the three bullets out of the air with three quick snatches, then flinging them into the path of the oncoming arrow. It spun in the air, somersaulting past him, shrieking sonics that were unpleasant, yes, but wouldn’t they hurt everyone? With a sweep of his hands, the air rippled, warping the sound back at the group in the doorway. Oh, and a glowing man was flying at him with a weapon he’d long learned the secret of. Yawn. “Fear,” he said, flicking his hand at Jacob. He could almost taste the terror that suddenly coursed through the man, and everyone could see when it took effect. That was the moment that the green light completely cut out and the man kept sailing as far as inertial would carry him, crashing unnaturally to the floor, wasn’t it?

Spoiler: the ‘when’ was ‘immediately.’ So probably before the girl had even shut off her funny little sonic arrow that had been sent off-target.

“Isn’t it funny? This world could have used some nobility a few centuries ago. Now? Oh, now it’s just going to get you killed, just like everyone else, isn’t it?”

Kai shook her head at Jake, despite the shaking of her body. She was confident he could recognize the motion- and it gave her another second to find the words she needed. "I can't do much more than stand up even with the amp- even if there is no portal to draw from- I trust you, and I think I'm better off with you amped for now." She said with a smile, pressing a kiss to his mouth, despite her weakness. Perhaps not the best of her ideas since he made her weak in the knees at the best of times- but she had been afraid she'd never see him again and he had come for her and- and she had some emotions without names that may pertain to him.

She held on as he lifted her- snuggling into the warmth of his arms on the way up, even as she wrapped the twisted pohaku in her hands. She couldn't undo what had been done, but the least she could do was put the spirit of the stone to rest when she had the chance. Kai watched Jake's face from her vantage point below him, admiring the look of determination on his face- even as she tried to echo her fears from the last outing they had. He hadn't come to save her because he cared, he came to save her because she tended to show her gratitude in a physical fashion. Which sounded hollow even to her, and she almost didn't notice the asshole on the throne over the pounding of her heart.

Kai did her best to stand up when Jake set her down, grinning first at the comment about holding up the wall, and then blushing quite thoroughly from the moniker. She glared at Marten for daring to use cap's shield like that- she would have launched herself at him, except that she was weaker then a newborn kitten at that moment. Something that she conveniently forgot the moment Jake went down. "Jake!" Kai yelled prior to sending a glare at Marten. Which she did before shoving herself off the wall and stumbling towards her fallen paramour- who she made it just a few steps short of before her legs fell out from underneath her. She laid one shaking hand on his shoulder as she tried to get a reaction from him. Something that said he was conscious- though she would have accepted alive and not terribly harmed.

“But I didn’t.” He pointed out, giving Chris a smile, they were stuck in now, no point in showing anything of his fear, Chris needed confidence so Safi gave it. “Your shield held. I trust you.” And that was the crux of it, Safi had placed his safety in Chris’s hands and in return he would step into the fire to make sure it was his body that took the beating if it came to it.

Three women. All the hostages-( his mind supplied that description, collecting the evidence of shackles and the way they had been ‘led’ to this place..) accounted for. “Natasha.” He nodded the the redhead, Belle well taken care off in the fussing of the cyborg girl and her brother. “Good?” Barnes clearly from both his question earlier and the way he responded some relationship with her.

That wasn’t fucking complicated at all.

“Hey fiance.” He grinned at Belle after she was dressed continuing the old chestnut hoping to make her smile, of all of them the siblings he guessed had seen the least violence, “Sexy.” His eyebrows wiggled at her mix of outfit, his little ‘rawr’ earned him an half smile eye roll so mission accomplished.

What was missing though was foot wear; Safi scooped her into his arms, the interaction with their captor over and done with before he could find a better course of action than shooting. Which clearly did shit all.

Fear.

It crashed down on him, drowning him, feeding the little voice into a screaming Tsunami. There was one person here he couldn’t feed to this dead world. Not Belle, not the woman wearing his wife’s face.

Belle Was set down, his hand curling around the familiar frame of his Glock.

It was Safi that broke, his gun rose, hand shaking for the first time in a decade he sighted down on the back of an innocent man’s head.

Kill the cowboy(he’s old, it’s not a sin to save-) and the one man he couldn’t watch die would live.

His finger was bearing down on the trigger when all hell broke loose.

Do you want to know the truth?

Belle knew fear, she understood, the low constant background dread the pooled in your belly every day when you woke up to try and live your life in a city filled with maniacs.

She knew the pulse spiking touch of it when someone walked too close.

She knew throat closing terror when you realize there’s no fighting back.

She knew the crushing helplessness of being useless.

Belle though herself weak, useless, a burden.

And the man who’d loved her had given her a gift, that would protect her, help her fight the battles he knew would come from being his beloved. He’d never told her what that gift held, and than it was too late.

Fear called it, that crushing terror that pounded down on her, screaming inside and out. Only this time there was an open portal for it to fulfill its purpose.

Her engagement ring screamed through the open portal breaking past the enchantments the wizard had set on her belongings to keep them safe; cracking black and scarlet light zipped into this world landing on her outstretched hand.

Belle knew fear.

Her love of a dead man had opened a door, her work to feed him with a Magican skilled in hellfire propped it open. And the ring she’d willing taken reached using her fear.

Hell was such a mailable concept; here it was simply the realm of the unquiet dead, and there where so many to let out.

Starting with the owners of the artifacts collected in that room.

Words never spoken on this world echoed in the in between spaces; a broken arc reactor shone brightly again ’We might not be able to save this world, but we sure as hell will avenge it’

The roar that shook the building was intimately familiar to the group having silenced its owner only minutes before, yet that spectral behemoth seemed to have no confusion as to who his rage was truly meant for.

The Avengers who never were assembled for the first and last time joined by ranks of Shield agents.

‘Do it and I’ll tase you into the carpet.’ One who kicked away Safi’s gun, turning to join the fray.

Belle never saw any of it, her body acted as a channel for a much power beyond her leaving her collapsed and unconscious.

Bucky gave a grin and a wink at Nat in response to her reply- she was obviously at least somewhat alright if she was cracking jokes. Which. Actually scratch that- but who was he to mess with a perfectly good coping mechanism? He took the jacket back with haste, happily shucking it over the scars and metal that was his left shoulder and arm. He was content to offer it, he wanted Nat comfortable after all- but he did not like the feeling that came with others being able to see the total of his prosthetic.

"I got to say doll- I feel like the sight of you in my clothes is repayment enough." He quipped in reply before turning his back to her and crouching. "But if you wouldn't mind climbing on- It's not exactly debris free on the ground." He added with a nod at her shoeless state. He waited for a moment as she made her decision before standing back up and following the others out the door.

He (set down Nat/ Stepped away from Nat) to give her room to maneuver as he whipped out his own weapons and prepared to fire. He didn't hesitate to start shooting at the man, didn't even consider taking a shot at Virgil- the fear that was suddenly running through his veins simply shut off Bucky as the Winter soldier took his place.

The winter soldier only noted the spectres as a side thought- even as Bucky tried to break free and cover Steve. That instinct remained however and he found himself working in concert with the spectral Steve and the Bucky who had died a Hydra pawn. There was no hesitation in their teamwork, not one of them questioning what was happening, or why.
