The portal that the rescuers stepped through led them into a pitch-black cave, with an uneven floor. It wasn’t until Jake stepped through and his ring illuminated the area with a bright green light that they could see that they were in a subway tunnel. The way behind them was blocked off by a collapse that a train had crashed into (and the portal they’d come through was, in fact, in the doorway of the last subway car), and the way ahead stretched into darkness. The entire area smelled of decay, and even without stepping close to examine, they could see several skeletons around the crashed train from where they stood.

The tracks were rusted over and in places even removed. The tunnel ahead seemed devoid of anything that they could see, aside from the occasional drips of water from above. There were occasional signs of life in the tunnel in the way of graffiti (“Repent, the end is nigh,” “All Hail the King,” “Chitauri massacre is not genocide” and “Bango Skank was here” visible without them exploring, plus a spraypainted eye that appeared black in the green light), but there was no sign that anyone was presently near them, nor had been for any time in recent memory.

Virgil looked around, trying to keep the green light behind him to not be blinded, and waited for the others to finish coming through the portal and orienting themselves, apparently rather interested in the graffiti while he waited.

Shortly after the group arrived, though, there was an audible clanking sound from some long way up the tunnel.

Since he had to wear the damn thing Safi’s wrist was covered by a purple watch and was the second man through the portal following their cowboy guide, Barnes at his side, both men held their weapons slightly off center, clearly covering Virgil.

Safi peeled right, flicking on the dull red light attached to his rifle, Barnes covered left, both men sweeping high and low for potential threats. His efforts were in vain when the glow stick of fucking Doom decided to back light them. “Can you turn that down.” He hissed narrowing his eyes and not looking towards him to ATTEMPT to preserve his night vision.

Viscerally he did NOT want Chris to step into this place, instinct and the obvious signs screamed that this was a place people went to die. Chris wasn’t a soldier, he didn’t need to see this.

“Any idea from here?” The question was half addressed to the group but mostly at the Cowboy.

The sharp clank drew attention, Safi Let Barnes cover that direction while he covered their flank, he was taking no chances it was a distraction.

“Keep behind glow stick.” He whispered to Chris, let the light show draw attention and fire. Chris could be overlooked in his literal shadow.

If there was one thing that a Green Lantern generally didn't do well, it was subtlety. They were, by nature, not shy creatures, and much of their training tended toward overwhelming shows of force and intimidation. After all... when showing up with the Lantern symbol on your chest didn't make the opposition shit their pants and throw up their hands in surrender, a lot of the time finding a giant green pulse cannon pointing at their groin did. So when he was asked to keep the light down, he suppressed the urge to roll his eyes, at least until he'd dimmed the light and formed a pair of night-vision goggles instead.

Another interesting aspect of the new ring on his left hand was that it could apparently sense the emotional spectrum... or at least imbalances in it. This world was throwing it into a loop with readings that really wouldn't make any difference to the others, but that Jake was familiar enough to be wigged out by. In this world, the Blue Light (which wouldn't help him anyway since apparently he couldn't fucking use it) was absent, or absent in any quantity that the ring could measure. What the hell could do that?

The clanking drew Jake's attention just like it drew everyone else's though, and he spun in that direction, ring raised, a pale green aura making him glow in the darkness. Well, screw it. He didn't really care if that guy didn't like it, he was a Lantern, and Lanterns didn't hide from things coming their way... which, now that he was forced to think about it, was a little dumb. Shit. Also, there was nothing in visible range of them yet, so he killed the protective field, effectively shutting off most of the light he was giving off. A quick query of his ring gave him the answer they needed. "Reading five objects coming this way from a side tunnel that's a hundred meters ahead of us," he said, keeping his voice down as well.

While Christian wouldn’t ever be the guy who wanted to rush through an unknown portal on the other end of which he knew would be an unwelcoming world and possible danger first, he also did not like the fact that Safi seemed to be interested in being that guy. He also didn’t want to admit that he liked being protected, even as he so often tended to hide behind Safi. He could be cautious and still be competent!

Now, he was weighed down with body armor, which Chris wasn’t sure he really liked, but Safi had put it on him, and he wasn’t going to argue with Safi, not when it came to safety. Besides, all the touching, and Chris was still perhaps reeling just a little bit from that when he hustled to follow Safi and Barnes through the portal. But there was no hesitation between the step that took him into the portal on Hub’s side and the one that brought him through on the other side.

It was dark, but that didn’t stop Christian from immediately moving to stand close and just behind Safi, eyes roving over everything, taking in the graffiti, the subway, how run down everything here was, and the terrible noise that came from down the tunnel, past where the green light showed. He turned away from the light, blinking to clear his eyes of it, and immediately moved to pull out a small metal doll and a wax pencil from his satchel, quickly writing a small runic symbol on the doll before replacing it back into his satchel and shifting things around as he looked for the thick paper he’d gotten for the purpose of shield spells. Once the rune was drawn on the doll, Safi was protected with the same shield spell that Safi himself had worked with Chris to learn. Barnes would be next, and then the cowboy; the glowing green guy didn’t seem like he had much need of one, but Chris would make more than enough for everyone anyway, hopefully before whatever five things were coming at them. He didn’t have to so much as touch Safi to shield him this time, but that didn’t stop him from setting a light hand on Safi’s arm and murmuring, “Shield is up.”

He offered Barnes a small piece of the thick paper, “Take this, keep it in your pocket. It’ll protect you. Two direct hits.” Any kinds of hits, Chris had learned. Useful spell. He offered a similar piece of paper to Virgil before he reached into his pocket to pull out two small magnets and clutching them separated from each other. Whatever was coming, he could help, no matter what Safi might think. He could help. Still, Christian obeyed Safi’s words, staying behind the glowing green man, and close to Safi.

Just in case.

Queth checked her gun again as they prepared to enter the portal- something she had been coerced into going through as one of the last- because of course the highly trained cyborg who can see in all types of places- that's the one who should definitely go last. But if it made the short, squishy, humans happy- so be it. She brushed a hand through her hair as she moved into the next universe. She frowned and blinked her eyes to adjust- before blinking again as the floating one turned off the lights.

Her natural lowlight vision was more than enough to scan the area around them- and turning on her thermal in her metal eye, she quickly found the five moving figures. Clicking the safety off on her gun, she raised an eyebrow at Chris. "Have you rethought your position on me shooting everything between us and the damsels?" She asked as she casually shuffled him towards a space where he would be protected- he seemed to be the least combat inclined an thus the best choice to be kept safe.

She casually shrugged her shoulders as she took up the rear- watching where they came from in the off chance they were attacked from behind. "If not- I bet you 100 creds you will before we get there. You may not change your mind- but I'm confident you'll think about it."

Okay, follow Ye Ol’ Cowpoke through a portal to Bad New York with So-Serious Steve, Not-Her-Bucky Barnes, the Green Glowbug, Tiny Adorable Tony Stark, and the Cyborg Elf Chick, to rescue the Damsels Distressed (and apparently naked). Right. Okay, cool, she could handle this. At least three of these peeps were Avenger types (or so she hoped), Cyborg Elf Chick looked this side of badass, Ye Ol’ Cowpoke seemed sturdy enough, and Green Glowbug could float around and make light, so he was helpful. She wasn’t sure what Tiny Adorable Tony Stark could do, as she didn’t see a suitcase suit, and his wrists seemed bare for a wrist gauntlet, but hey, maybe he had some other cool trick up his sleeve. (Maybe even literally, you never knew when it came to any Tony Stark.)

So alright, then. Lori took a deep breath, and then stepped through the portal, slowly letting it out as she came out the other side, ducking to the left and looking around around, pulling a small penlight out of her pocket even as she drew a gun, keeping the light off for the moment as she aimed down the hallway where the clanking noises were coming from.

She wasn’t getting anything from the spell, unlike what she’d gotten when she’d considered kissing Justin for luck, so she figured they had at least a couple of moments to get in place and figure this out. “Those things, whatever they are, are gonna take a few seconds to get to us, at least. So what’s the plan here? We try to sneak out before they reach us for the sake of stealth, or we take ‘em out to keep our backs clear?” Either way, she was good to go. What she couldn’t help was how her eyes went to So-Serious Steve, waiting for confirmation of whatever plan he was no doubt forming. But hey, if someone had something, she’d go with whatever - she just… expected a plan from Cap.

Bucky had been prepared for the combat to start the instant they went through the portal- So the clanking sound did little to change his level of attention. He was- after all- already scanning the left flank for any and all potential threats. The glowing did offset his night vision for a moment- but he could fight blind if he needed.

As it was, he recovered faster than that, giving Chris a grateful smile before tucking the paper into his jacket. Bucky wouldn't pretend to understand magic- but he trusted Safi- and Safi trusted Chris- that was good enough for the commando.

Just for conversation- he hummed slightly. "Out of curiousity- who all are we going to be rescuing?"

Virgil looked behind them, then up the tunnel toward the noise that had (probably quite rightly) alarmed most of them there. Oh, he had his ideas, yes, particularly after what the green boy had said. “Listen, aside from the clanging. Do you hear the air moving? It’s not moving around us, just down there. If there’s a way out of here, it’s that way, not behind us.” There was a chance the others couldn’t hear it, of course. His senses were a bit better than most people’s, and he’d learned in Gilead to use them better even still. He drew out his guns, cocked them, then glanced at the others, seeing with approval that most were ready to fight. Good. “There’s nothing for it. Our way is ahead, sai. We move, and anything in our way either moves aside or falls in front of us.” Anything else would just be speculation. They hadn’t seen what was coming toward them yet, they couldn’t plan for the unknown except to be ready to kill it. “But if what we hear is looking to fight, I’m not going to be caught with my back to the wall like a fool. Forward, then, and keep as much distance between you as you can, less chance of one shot taking out two people.” It wasn’t exactly something that was very applicable in the confines of this tunnel, but the attempt couldn’t hurt.

As the group advanced, the tunnel that the clanging was coming from (and coming much more loudly now) became visible in the dim light still being given off by Jacob’s ring and the red light Safi was using. Even more, a light began to show from that tunnel, dim but visible in the pitch blackness, bobbing oddly with each clang. As the group halted, five figures lumbered out that were vaguely familiar to anyone who had met Tony Stark, yet oddly bulky and wrong. After all, no one there had seen the version of Tony’s armor that Obediah Stane had designed, much less the upgraded versions he made in the years after there was no Tony Stark to stop him. They turned toward the group, metallic hulks that blocked their path, arc reactors glowing in their chests. For a split second, they just considered the seven interlopers in their tunnels… then all five raised their arms, the unmistakeable sound of chainguns whirring up and electronics crackling coming from the armor. “Take them down, for your fathers’ sakes!” Virgil barked, firing at once and putting a bullet through the eye of the nearest one’s helmet as he darted to the side to put distance between himself and Safi. All the same, though, the figure didn’t stumble, didn’t fall… and didn’t stop powering up its attack.

As the rest of the impromptu rescue party filed out of the portal he was presently surprised by how most of them took up formation with little to no overlap in the fields of fire. His estimation of success drifted up into the double digits.

Safi didn’t think Chris was useless, hell he’d proven himself in combat once already, and done more than just keep his cool, he’d kept his head, thinking and moving. That was more than most baby boots could manage.

He just wished that Chris was not there and of this group Chris was who he was here to protect. If it came to it Chris won over everyone. No matter how hard the little man would attempt to sacrifice himself.

“Let’s Hope he doesn’t have to.” Safi’s Gruff voice answered the sarcastic woman.

“His sister and a few others.” Safi answered Barnes, amusement threaded lightly in the voice at the acknowledgement that the other man had just dropped everything on his say so.

It was exactly what he would have expected from Jimmy.

Hopefully this version wouldn’t disappoint him like the other did.

The redhead looked to him for a plan and Safi had already been looking for options, problem was the cowboy was right. And with out a good block of explosives and a shit ton of luck they weren’t getting out the other way.

Which meant moving through ambush.

That was a skill even highly experienced teams failed at.

There was some cover offered by the train but the high caliber chain guns would rip through it like butter.

“Move THROUGH!!” He shouted processing the situation, he saw the bullet pass apparently harmlessly through the eye socket.

See while he’d never seen THAT Tony’s first armors he HAD seen that glowing reactor core before.

The ‘glass’ he suspected was anything but; and that was why God had invented under barrel grenade launchers.

“Crack the Glowy shit!” He ordered putting action to words.

The gas propelled HE had enough concussive force when applied directly to the beautiful target to if not blow out the reactor than damage the protective casing.

The next spray of six directly into the ring should finish the job.

Safi hadn’t stopped moving, trusting skill, luck and the shield to keep him in mostly one piece as he ran through the group making himself a target and hopefully forcing a few to change their tracking away from the rest.

In this situation the fact that they weren’t trained as a group was an advantage. Scattering as long as they could still cover each other was the best way to divide the incoming fire and take them down.

They were barely through the portal and they were already facing off with… Something. Great. Whatever it was sounded metallic, and that meant that it was possible, even likely, that it was ferrous. Thus the magnets. He was immediately making up shield spells for people, which included himself. He might be willing to sacrifice himself to make sure that Belle was rescued, but that didn’t mean he wanted to die. Or be horribly maimed or crippled or left behind.

When the elf asked if he had changed his mind, he arched a brow right back toward her, “No. These might be nasty, but what if we come across an innocent? A child? You going to just shoot them and hope they weren’t trying to run away from us? Going to kill little kids because they might be hostile?” He frowned, “We’re supposed to be the good guys here, going to rescue our friends and family. Not murdering the natives here because they’re in our way.” The set of his shoulders was confident, “I won’t change my mind, Miss. I might be glad we have all these weapons, and people willing and able to use them, but I won’t ever agree to simply shoot first and ask questions later, or even consider it.” He felt strongly on this, and he was standing his ground on the matter. “So you see, it wouldn’t be fair of me to take your money.”

Still, he moved where she put him, making sure he could see Safi from there before he gave Queth a small, almost shy smile as he offered her a small piece of paper with a rune on it, “Put this in your pocket. I’ll protect you for a hit or two.” At this rate, he was going to run out of paper, and that wouldn’t be a good thing. Maybe others would have paper on them. Or they could find something he could write on here as they went along. One thing was certain: with the wax pencil and the metal poppet, Christian could keep a shield up on Safi. Silver linings.

Safi said they had to move through the hallway where the metal things were coming, and as they moved forward, and the objects moved toward them, Christian faltered half a second when he saw them. Iron Man. Or at least, a much clunkier version of them, not all that different from the version than the toy he’d given Tony depicted. Complete with arc reactors. Looking at them, he told them seriously, “We’re friends!”

He didn’t really expect it to work. When the bullet went through the eye hole without any reaction, Christian told the rest of them, “There’s no one inside them…” That… Was good. He would have felt bad about Safi or anyone else here hurting people. And it meant that these things were just unintelligent machines. Things, not people.

With deliberate motions, Christian opened his hand with the magnets in it, holding them loosely in his palm and picked the magnets up to place one toward the fleshy part of his palm, and one where his fingers started, muttering to himself what each represented; each of the magnets were one of the… Iron Legion? Suits. Then, once he had the idea of it firmly in his mind’s eye, he looked at the metallic hulks, specifically the two on the right side, and clenched his hand into a tight fist, forcing the two magnets, both of the same pole, together as quickly and forcefully as he could before then releasing his fist and letting the magnets fly apart. The magnets didn’t go far, not in the first place, and even as they repelled each other, they didn’t go far in his hand, but that was how his magic worked; a small thing from him, a larger effect on his target. He had faith in his magic, but this world, and these things? He had no idea how effective his spell would be.

Jake didn’t know if there were people in those things like Kai’s old boss was asking, and to be honest? He didn’t really care. Even as they stepped into view, his ring picked out eight threat parameters on each one of them, so he wasn’t going to be fucking around. Thankfully, those with him weren’t fucking around either. The cowboy put a bullet into one’s eye (which sadly didn’t have much effect). Scruffy McGunNut was using explosives, which… well, awesome. His ring registered that it was registering as powerless and harmless even before it fell to the ground. Awesome. He didn’t know what Kai’s old boss was doing, but apparently it worked, because the two metal figures on the ends suddenly smashed in together, smashing one other between them and shoving another one forward. Their firing had so far been delayed, which was good, but that one moving forward looked like it didn’t have much of its steam knocked out of it.

Time to show these clowns what a power ring can do. BOTH of you.

Green light spun into being around Jacob. The rings could form light into any basic shape he could imagine, this was true and one of the most basic functions that lanterns used, but they could also recreate any actual item that he knew of. He might not know how to create the mech suit that formed from light around him… but his rings sure did. Emerald steel legs slammed into the floor as he surged forward, grabbing that staggering Iron Monger and slamming it past the others to crush it into the floor. Smacking its hand out of the way as it reached up to try to shove him off, he slammed a ring-armored hand down into the chest plate, yanking the arc reactor free and throwing it aside as the struggles from the figure beneath him ceased. Only then did he really look down at its dislodged helmet and see what those still behind him could see from the two that Chris had slammed in together. Their cracked helmets were falling away to show skeletal heads beneath, with rotting flesh sloughing off, but electronics embedded around the cranium still obviously active as their heads looked morbidly up at them, jaws opening and closing pointlessly as the zombie Iron Mongers righted themselves, preparing again to attack now that their simplistic senses were righted.

Queth rolled her eyes at Chris. "I clearly wasn't suggesting literally shooting everything- I'm not that out of my mind." She quipped in reply, even as she least forward- hand outstretched, ripping the arc reactor directly out of one of the chests. She hoisted it for the others to see before she noticed the rotten ribcage underneath the suit. Making a face, she called back to her sort of teammates.

"Cyber zombies!" She yelled, even as she back flipped out of the way of the next one shooting at her. Turning her momentum, she slid under its fire to swipe it's legs out from underneath it. Twisting to straddle it's back, she pinned down the struggling limbs before pulling them off, one by one. This was a maneuver she was quite familiar with- something that caused her to send a withering look at Safi. So help her, she had been right to suggest she go first.

Pulling up literally every mental defence she possessed- a few traps as well- and quickly backing her memory up to the secure harddrive in her neck- she sighed with annoyance before pulling the cord from the back of her neck. Queth paused for one brief second- long enough to call out "Cover me!" before stabbing the jack into the tangled nest of wires and letting the world drop away from her.

To Queth, she had entered a virtual reality- a surprisingly blocky and crude one (more blunt force than fitness). To everyone else, it would seem as though she had suddenly dropped unconscious while on top of this robot.

Once it was evident (to her anyway) that they hadn’t been in immediate danger, she had holstered the gun; it wasn’t her favorite weapon, and there were others with them. Instead, she loosed her bow from her back, switching to the quieter, more reliable, and favored weapon. She shot Not My Bucky a grin, “Ladies who need rescuing.” She liked this Bucky. It was nice to see that, like the man she knew, he had come along because he was needed, not because he had a personal stake in this rescue.

If the ‘objects’ (per Glowbug) were looking for a fight, well, this little group seemed well prepared for it. There was one amongst them that seemed a little underprepared, and hearing Tiny Adorable Tony Stark say that he wasn’t going to advocate shooting first and asking questions later, that he was against hurting anyone, well… Lori gave the guy a long, skeptical look. But no, he was absolutely for real. Oh god, he was even more adorable because of it, too.

Then there were five… Iron Monger looking Iron Legion bots coming at them with freaking chain guns and oh HELL NO, she wasn’t dying to something that looked like a thing out of Uncle Tony’s nightmares. So Serious Steve’s plan was to push through the big fuckers, so that’s what they were going to do.

Tiny Adorable Tony said that there was no one inside once the bullet passed through the eye socket of the armor without eliciting the smallest of responses, and Lorelei was glad of that. Sure, sometimes people had to die, but… And wow, Tiny Adorable Tony could do stuff. Not just any stuff, but he made those tin cans move, forcing them around, and Lori was suitably impressed. He might not want to hurt anyone, but he wasn’t afraid to take out machines. Good to know!

Lorelei took a few steps to the side, still covering her area, still with the group, just firing over Tiny Adorable Tony’s shoulder. Thwip. Thwip. Thwip. Three arrows flew in rapid succession toward the last remaining monstrous suit, embedding themselves around the arc reactor. For half a second, nothing seemed to happen. It almost might seem like she missed, but then as one, all three of the arrowheads detonated, separating that so-recognizable glowing circle of light from the rest of the suit.

She’d fired before she saw what it was, exactly inside them. And she was so, so glad she had. Because that? That was damn distracting. “Holy shit, this world is fucked up. Uncle Tony had definitely not built these. He would never do something like this, no way. He would never, ever build something that would do something like to people. Or at least, to people who weren’t him.

Cyborg Elf was calling for cover even as she… Pulled a cord from behind her neck and plugged it into the Iron Monger she was atop of. Well then. Lori pulled another arrow from her quiver, sliding it home and holding it there, not yet drawing it back as she watched the Cyborg Efl’s back while she was down for the count.

Bucky raised an eyebrow at Lorelei. "I had kind of gotten that part- I was hoping for names so that I'd know if I knew them." He quipped in reply- even as he was shooting at the iron mongers. When Safi had told them to aim for the arc reactor- oh Bucky had a snarky reply for that as well- he simply held it back when he realized that okay it may have been stating the obvious for him but a the majority of them weren't from a world with iron man.

He kept up a steady stream of bullets at key points on the bots while they fought them off- he didn't finish any himself, but he did think that he had helped some of his team. From there it was just a matter of standing guard over the elven doll while she was passed out on the back of one of the mongers. That was trying to buck out from underneath her despite its lack of limbs.

It was for the best that he had faced the worst Hydra had to offer, because otherwise he'd probably be right disturbed by the content of the bots. Bucky made a face at that, before taking a moment to address the rest of the group. "Good work guys."

The system that Queth found herself thrust into was in a very sorry state. She could access, at first, several subsystems in the armor (the motor functions, the weapon functions, power regulation), but as she moved toward the memory banks, things grew much less structured, much less clear as she moved into systems that were both degraded by decay and… biological.

She could see the record of the soldier, because that’s what it was, lined up, being ordered to fight the Chitauri. She could see the deployment, the battle that laid waste to most of the city as they fought indiscriminately, caring only to eradicate the alien invaders, innocent bystanders be damned. She could see the reports of the devastation of Europe, Australia, Asia, and the western United States, the massive mix of alien weaponry and nuclear holocaust. The ocean had literally receded worldwide because the Asian continent had been blasted away, creating a crater that it could fill. Through it all, they followed the voice of the one man who’d stood up to direct them in what to do, to follow the will of the Crimson King, he said, though by then the world was so desperate that no one even cared to ask who that was.

There was a picture of something massive and green, though moving too quickly to really give any idea of anything other than unstoppable force and an incredible, terrifying roar. The last order had been to guard these tunnels, and that’s what the soldier had done, as he slowly starved to death, unable to defy the orders that were never rescinded. The last recorded thought was that they must have been forgotten as the command center was abandoned in some emergency.

The Iron Monger struggled more and more at this point as the thoughts turned to the horror of it all, the endless agony of being kept alive for centuries by an arc reactor woven into his body. The idea of having a whole body, of having independence and free will was barely remembered… at least, until this free mind was presented, with its curiosity and its functioning systems. Little by little, the only thing that she could detect was one word, over and over: “ESCAPE.” And, with each repetition, the undead, putrid thoughts started pushing toward her, trying to escape their decomposing host and replace her in hers….

As the armored zombie gave one hard buck, revealing the arc reactor, Virgil finally decided that this farce had gone on long enough. He might not be able to access either of their systems (nor did he want to), but he could sense the increase in data flow and could instinctively tell a hostile system when it was staring him in the face. As it bucked Queth one more time, he raised his guns, firing twice in rapid succession, the first bullet cracking the glass (if it was glass) covering the reactor, the second bullet hitting the first and driving them both into it, killing the ancient reactor with a single flash of energy, shutting down both the biological and mechanical systems as surely as pulling the plug would shut off a computer.

"Cry your pardon, sai," he said to Queth, hoping she could hear him (or at least that her senses were still recording), "But nothing in a dying world is going to be too healthy to expose yourself to for very long."

Queth had done her best to protect herself- she wasn't convinced that she had needed saving- but she had been rather distracted by the contents of the mind she found. And okay she hadn't been confident that she could push back the iron Monger too much longer. So yes, Queth was grateful. "No problem- thanks for the assist." She managed as she wiped at the cold sweat that had covered her skin. She had never felt lucky to belong to her world until this moment- had she not, she didn't think she'd make it out with her sanity.

Sitting up, she pulled her connector free of the dead creature beneath her, giving it one sharp tug to have it respool itself in her neck. "So- Things I know- as far as I can tell, this is a world similar to the avengers home world- but the avengers never came to be. Instead- when the chitauri invaded, they armed average humans with this gear. Didn't stop the world from being devastated by the attack- though they did eventually prevail. But expect nuclear wasteland- no iron man means no one to redirect the missile from its target of new York." Shaking her head for a moment to clear it, she held up a finger to indicate she needed a second. Queth took a deep breath as she unhooked her flask from her belt and took a pull of the contents.

"Then the oceans receded because Asia got wiped off the map entirely. After that some piece of drek showed up promising to lead the way- who instructed them to follow the will of the 'crimson King' whoever that is-" She paused and gestured at the area around them. "And then these guys were left to guard this tunnel- an order that wasn't ever rescinded even after they starved to death. Whoever did all of this knew that there was something important here- I think they may know about the portal." She rubbed her forehead, content with her summary before widening her eyes and looking back up at the others. "Also I think I saw something about the hulk? Though that was a long time ago so it may mean nothing."

That...could have gone a LOT worse.

Safi didn’t relax as the last of the mechanical monstrosities dropped, but the fact that their little group had dealt with them with no casualties or even injuries that he’d seen. That didn’t stop him from taking up position next to Chris, “You good?” His position also blocked the view of the poor bastards.

The cybernetic undead soldiers hit all of his personal trigger points, and added ‘high tech’ to the same status as ‘magic’ for personal hate.

He couldn’t see what Queath did but he’d seen enough soldiers left behind to die to guess what had happened to these men.

Luckily she disconnected before he had to ask how long they were planning on waiting, or figuring out a way to transport her and the suit she was attached to. Maybe glow bug?

“Nukes?” Shit. He looked at Barnes “Do you have a Rad Counter?” They were Standard in most full dress out but he wasn’t IN standard dress was he?

“Securing the portal is something we’ll need to handle on the way home. Right now-“ he looked down the tunnel “unless it’s unlivable up there we need to keep going.” And if it was...the women wouldn’t have survived either.

Safi hefted his weapon nodding to the others and headed out.

He really wished he had a chance in hell of convincing Chris to go back.

A small part of Bucky wondered at his ability to see such horror and not flinch- but the winter soldier stood stoically, having seen much worse in his time. Even when he had the chance to see the beings in more detail. It occurred to him in an offhand thought that he had been rather like these things- capable of nothing but executing orders, a combination of man and machine. With his mind so thoroughly entrenched in his past he responded automatically in Russian to Safi. "Nyet." He offered, voice clipped.

It took him a moment to realize that he hadn't spoken English and that an explanation was in order. "That is- No. Rad counters became standard gear after my time. The army can't exactly welcome me back with open arms anymore. Not without treating me as a POW." Bucky offered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly as he had little else to offer to the conversation.

He did perk up at the mention of the hulk- which sent an irrational surge of jealousy down his veins. Because he didn't have claim on any Nat- just because one of them had spent a little time with him and responded to his flirting- didn't give him the right to be jealous. "Wonder what happened to the would be avengers in this world. I'm glad that the only ones of us from worlds with the avengers are used to time distortion." He muttered offhand with a nod at Lorelei. "Imagine how strange Tony, Steve, Clint and Nat would find this place."

Jake came back over to the group about when they were discussing the possibility of radiation poisoning from this mission. Well damn, that was one thing they hadn’t considered when this had started, wasn’t it? This world was looking shittier and shittier… but his thinking was along the lines of what Bucky was thinking. How fucked up would Kai think this place was? “Well, when we rescue Widow, you can ask her,” Jake quipped, not really feeling right calling someone he hadn’t really met ‘Nat.’ And, since everyone was going to worry (although if it was dangerous, he was pretty sure he would have gotten an alert and a protective shield as soon as they got here), he held his ring up toward the ceiling. “Ring, scan for background radiation.”

The answer was audible for everyone, because he didn’t want this to be a big secret from the group. ”Detecting elevated readings from recorded radiation levels of sector 2814 planet designated: Earth. Radiation levels not consistent with nuclear explosion. Radiation levels not consistent with nuclear fallout. Radiation levels not at a level harmful to human life.”

Jake nodded, then decided to just make it blatantly clear. “Is there any risk in going above ground?”

”Scanning.”The ring was silent for a moment this time, then answered. ”Detecting a large extra-planetary body in decaying orbit around this planet. Impact will cause a global extinction event that will negate any risk that radiation poses. 0.000082% estimated chance that this planet will exist long enough for radiation to be an issue.”

Jake swore, then looked up the tunnel. “So. This keeps sounding better and better. I think it’s time we got a move on.” And, just because he needed to know, he queried the ring silently to confirm that no, he would not be able to drag that ‘extra-planetary body’ out of orbit even with two rings powering him. He really didn’t want to share that information with people that probably wouldn’t wonder if he could do that to start with.

“And yet, you literally said that’s what you were wanting to do. And I’m sorry, ma’am, but I don’t know you.” Coming from a world that held the Joker and Scarecrow, that saw humans with amazing and terrifying powers and abilities, Christian couldn’t take a statement and make the assumption it was sarcasm. ‘I can walk through walls’ could totally be an honest statement. ‘I am the Batman’ was just as possible. ‘Let’s shoot everything between here and our friends’ was no more or less insane than someone shooting you with a chicken gun or being made up of what was as malleable as clay.

Cyber zombies was an apt description. To his credit, Christian didn’t retch at the sight. They didn’t have time for him to be sick; he had to just push through. Which he did. When Safi turned to him, Chris was a bit more pale than usual, and he shook his head, but muttered, “Yeah, let’s just get past them, please.” There had been people in those suits. Not anymore; what was left wasn’t people, though that didn’t help him feel any less nauseous. “It has to be liveable up there.” No, Safi didn’t have a prayer in hell of getting Chris to leave; his sister was in this place, this horrible, dying place, and he was going to bring her home. He wasn’t going to be a coward, he wasn’t going to be useless. He hadn’t been useless in the fight! He’d delayed them from firing, at least.

As snarky as he’d been toward her before, Christian followed after Safi, pausing to offer Queth a steadying hand as she climbed off of the Iron Monger she had connected to. “Those poor people.”

Not nuclear fallout. Good, because that meant that Belle wasn’t dying of radiation poisoning. He wasn’t sure he could heal that. It also meant that they could run into living people between here and where the ladies were.

He wasn’t sure he was relieved.
