Kaalth stood outside of Nala's door, trying not to be nervous. They were just going to see one of the gardens, and the bazaar, and that was nothing to be stressed about. Just a normal outing, a chance to talk to Nala and get to know her better. To, hopefully, convince her that he would make an acceptable suitor.

Which was why he was nervous. Nala was interested, but there were still things that could go wrong and... No, Kaalth told himself firmly, he wasn't going to worry about that. Everything was going to go fine.

He shifted the wraps that he'd brought so that they were laying more neatly over his arm. They were similar to the simple rectangular shawls that Orions wore when it was cold out, and the garden that he was taking her too, even in early fall, could get chilly. Besides, it was an excuse to give her a gift, to let her know that his interest was sincere and serious.

His task done, Kaalth squared his shoulders and lightly knocked on the door.

Nala sat in front of her mirror as she rearranged her hair. It wouldn't do for her to look overly eager and she was more than happy to spend the excess time making herself overwhelmingly beautiful to the point where her date would forget how to use words. It was a discipline that she had started when her father had started setting her up on meet-ups with any man he deemed eligible enough for his only daughter. Nala had learned that it was an excellent way to judge a date's character- based on what they did when they saw her.

Smiling to herself, she decided to pull out a number of the stops (not all of them- She didn't want to stop Kaalth's heart. For longer than a few seconds.) Nala twisted her vibrant hair up and slid the burgundy jeweled hair pin that she was saving for special occasions. Regardless of whether he had seen it already or not- Nala felt quite confident wearing it, and that combined with the exposed skin of her neck meant she was pretty certain she was a knockout.

Speaking of knocking, she smiled when she heard Kaalth making his arrival known. Nala hummed softly, pretending that she hadn't been waiting for him and instead called out in response. "I'll be ready in just a moment!" She calmly relaid her small bits of loose hair carefully around her face. Straightening up she then tugged slightly at her outfit to make her outfit look elegant but not like she had put a large period of time into picking it out. (To be fair- She didn't spend too much time on it- she didn't have that many outfits to choose from yet.)

Deciding she had waited long enough, she strolled casually to the door and opened it with a small gasp and a quick flutter of her eyelashes. "Kaalth! I'm sorry, I got caught up in a book I was reading- Were you waiting long?" Nala said, transitioning her faked surprise into a smile.

When Kaalth heard the "I'll be here in just a moment!" he knew that Nala was trying to play him, and make it seem like she wasn't too eager. Which made him smile, it made sense, according to what he'd been told about modern Orion rules that she'd want to make sure that his interest was sincere, but it also meant that she was interested, because if she wasn't, she wouldn't be playing the game.

When she opened the door, it was all he could do to not gape like a fish at the sight. "You look beautiful." he said, too overwhelmed to try to turn a more elegant compliment "Are you ready to go?" he asked, and then flushed a bit with embarrassment. Clearly she was ready to go for a walk.."Would you like to go to the gardens first? Or the bazaar?" he asked, letting her set the agenda. As was proper. And he wanted to make sure that she knew that he was a proper, well brought up man, who would let her make the final decisions.

Nala couldn't help the small bit of amusement that tugged at the corner of her lips as her appearance successfully rendered Kaalth only partially functional. It was a bit of a mark of success for her when she could stop a man from properly thinking. "Thank you. And Yes. I believe I said I was ready." She said, with a soft bite on her bottom lip to stop from laughing.

She stepped out the door to her room, pulling it closed behind her. Nala stepped into Kaalth's personal space for a moment- tilting her head up to meet his eyes and brushing her hands along his lower arms before smirking and walking past him. Nala turned her head back to him after she took a few steps.

"I was thinking gardens to start- So you'll need to lead the way."

Kaalth paused, breathless as Nala ran her hands over his arms. It was only the lightest, most gentle of touches, but it was a promise, and a reminder and he couldn't help but shiver a little at the contact. He let her walk past him, partially because he wasn't sure if she'd want to take the lead, at least until they got to the door, and partially because he was too focused on the sensation, and too happy that she'd actually initiated physical contact.

"Oh!" he said, hurrying to come up alongside her. "Of course, I'll be glad to show you." Shyly, knowing that he was being almost inexcusably bold, Kaalth held out his hand, so that she could take it if she wanted, as he lead her out of the Green Goddess and towards the garden.

It was only a short walk to the garden, and as they headed along the path, they moved out of the "city" and onto a gravel path. The temperature started to drop as well, and Kaalth held out the shawl he'd brought, which was in shades of red and purple, made of some incredibly soft wool. "I thought you might need this." he said, offering it to her.

Nala smiled at the offered hand- though she ignored it to hook her arm into his elbow instead. Call her paranoid- but after the last mission with the Orion raised away from his species- she didn't have any desire to give a man a grip on her hand. Their men were far too strong for her to resist his control- and she could caress his arm in a way that would distract him from anything she didn't feel like talking about. "Thank you." She said with a flutter of her eyelashes.

She hummed quietly as they walked- a simple tune but something her trained vocal cords handled well. When he offered the present however, Nala was briefly caught off guard. She blinked slightly before ducking her head with a soft smile. "That's so sweet!" Nala said happily as she stepped ahead of him and looked at him over her shoulder. "Help me put it on?"

Kaalth flushed with pleasure as she slipped her arm into his, thinking that she was doing it because she wanted to be closer to him. It didn't occur to him that she'd be worried about her safety around him, and would have been horrified if he had known. As far as he was concerned, the gods had made it so that men were bigger and stronger so that they could do the physically demanding work, the idea of using his strength to hurt a woman was not something he had ever entertained. Especially not Nala of all people.

As they walked he pointed out the things that they passed that she might find interesting, finding it easier to talk when he was focused on explaining things about the Hub, letting the conversation flow naturally.

"I'd be glad to." Kaalth said, wrapping the shawl around her and carefully arranging the folds. As he worked, he didn't try to avoid any opportunity to 'accidentally' caress her neck and shoulders. "There" he said, smiling at her "That should keep you warm." Once Nala was taken care of, he wrapped his own shawl around him much more quickly, and then offered her his arm once again. They headed down the path, into an avenue of trees, the leaves turning red and yellow and purple.

Nala smiled softly as she noticed the flush on his cheeks. It was nice to see that he hadn't read her intentions for what they were- and had simply enjoy the choice she made. It was good- meant that he hadn't even considered using his strength on her (... at least not for nefarious purposes.) Her shoulders relaxed slightly and her smile brightened at Kaalth.

Their walk was nice- hearing him tell her about the place they were in- only proved her suspicions that if Kaalth had been given a proper education, he would be quite intelligent. Nala briefly thought to herself that it was a good sign for her future lessons that he seemed to absorb information quite well.

She hummed happily at the feel of the fabric against her skin- one of the softest things she had felt in a while- spaceships did not make for luxurious homes. The colours matched her hair and hair pin quite nicely, which made her smile more set in her face. Nala also didn't fail to notice the way his hands lingered, the slight roughened texture sending sparks down her nerves as it caught her skin. Ducking her head a little shyly, she waited until he had his shawl on before hooking her arm back into his, appreciating his warmth as they moved into the colder area. She pursed her lips slightly to avoid grinning in an unbecoming fashion before offering. "Well- if it isn't enough to keep me from getting cold, it seems that you could probably do a wonderful job warming me up." Nala offered in an offhand fashion- watching him from the corner of her eyes as they walked.

Of course, her attention only remained on him for so long before she noticed the leaves around them in their array of colours. She gasped softly in sheer excitement at the garden before them. Certainly her home planet had somethings similar- but there were colours here that she hadn't seen on a tree before. "Beautiful." She said unintentionally, her eyes fully caught on the passing terrain.

Kaalth smiled happily at the way that Nala was enjoying their outing, and the way she'd approved of the shawl. Not to mention the way she'd reacted when he'd brushed his fingers against her neck. And then she'd made a teasing remark about him keeping her warm, and his face split into a grin. "I'd be glad to do that, if you start to get cold. Not just here, anywhere. Or if you get too hot, I could help you get your clothes off. I can do that too." Kaalth said. He knew, even as he said it, that it wasn't the smoothest line any man had ever trotted out, but he wasn't good at flirting, and knew that. Still, he was trying his best, and as they walked, he was aware of the way his scent was starting to change. Orion men didn't have control over their pheromones, and they weren't nearly has powerful as the ones that women produced, but it would be quite obvious that he was happy and that he was very attracted to Nala.

Nala seemed to enjoy the garden, which also made him happy, especially when she paused at one of his favorite views. "I like this spot too." he said, and, deciding it was a good opening, added "Not as beautiful as you." as he spoke he lowered his head so that his nose was near the join of her neck and shoulder. Almost, but not quite touching her. Not touching her, but close enough to breathe in her scent. It was a bold move, doing that was as firm an expression of interest as an Orion man could make-it indicated that he wanted to be hit by the full force of her pheromones, that spending the rest of the day unable to think of anything other than pleasing her was the most desirable of outcomes.

There was something sweet in the rather sincere response to her blatant flirting- Nala was quite certainly aware of what he was implying, but it was kind of cute, the combination of innocence and innuendo. She bit her lip slightly to stop her giggles before replying. "Yes. I imagine you could." She offered vaguely, not letting her opinion out in one form or another.

Nala could almost feel her pupils dilate as his scent changed. Part of her was pleased as punch that he was happy- but the scent of his desire was more of a heady flavour that raced along her nerves. She bit her lip again, only this time to stop a small noise from escaping her mouth. There was something about a man showing such want for her- it made her feel powerful, desirable, in a way that no non-orion ever could. She took a deep breath to regain her focus and listened to his reply.

Her mouth split into a smile when he informed her she was more beautiful than the leaves nearby. "I am not sure all would agree with that statement- but thank you." Nala replied, eyes still on their surroundings to the point where she found herself rather surprised by the feeling of his breath on her neck. It had been quite a while since a man had made his interest so apparent to her- likely in part due to most of her dates being set up by her brothers or father. There was usually rather a lot of awkwardness on dates rather than seduction. In response, she increased her pheromone production in a way that she knew would hit him hard, and also make her own desire perfectly clear.

If her scent spiked more than she had intended- well. Nala would claim to be out of practice- though it might be more accurate to say that it had been a while since she had actually cared all that much about a man's opinion, past those of her family or temporarily those of her targets. She took a half step forward so that she could turn to meet his eyes with her own gaze- but not far enough to stop their faces from being rather close. "Where to next?" Nala asked with a sparkle in her eyes from her enjoyment.

At least she found his attempts at flirting amusing, that was better than nothing, Kaalth thought, which was why he offered up a sincere compliment when the opportunity presented itself "Anyone who disagrees is either a man with absolutely no taste, or a woman who is jealous that she'll never be able to compete with you." he replied. The leaves were beautiful, but they were nothing compared to Nala. Even before he dared to lower his face to inhale her scent.

It was evident that she returned his interest, which gave him the courage to try to deliberately smell her, which otherwise he'd have trouble summoning the courage to do. It was a bold move, one that he'd never have done if he hadn't been positive that Nala was the most beautiful, wonderful and special woman that he'd ever met, or would ever meet.

His courage was rewarded, when his senses were overwhelmed by the pheromones that she released, the clearest possible indication that his interest was returned. She took a step towards him, and all he could hear was the blood pounding in his ears, all that he could see was the woman standing in front of him, his skin was so hyper-sensitive that he could almost feel how close she was standing, all that he could smell was her. When she asked where they should go next he wanted to say that they should go back to the Green Goddess, back to her room. He wanted to step forward and kiss her.

But he'd already gone beyond all the bounds of propriety just by doing something like deliberately smell her on the first date (and never mind that, by the standards he'd been raised with, going on a date was almost scandalous by itself) and touching her, or propositioning her was something that, well, doing it wasn't something that a proper, decently brought up man would do, and Kaalth didn't want her to think that he was easy, or that what he was offering was cheap. So when she asked what they should do he managed to say, in something that was almost a normal tone of voice "I think you said that you wanted to see the bazaar? We could go there, if you still want to."

Nala couldn't help but look down and smile at his compliments- it was hard to argue with someone who was so sincere and utterly convinced of their thoughts. "Thank you." She replied this time, accepting the flattery.

When she had unbound her scent- she had been anticipating a bit of a stagger- a small step backwards to lessen the effects she'd have on him. To do anything less was to offer her a trust she had in no way earned- because no matter how excellent he smelled, they both knew that if she said she wanted him to do something insane- he would, just to please her after getting hit so hard with pheromones.

So when he instead stayed still and breathed deeply as though he hadn't known air until that moment- Nala's mouth opened slightly as a simple blush made itself present on her skin. She wondered for a moment whether it might be too much for him if she reached out to take his arm again- if that was a cruelty or a kindness. Either way, she'd never been proficient with rejecting her own desires so she did just that and looped her arm through his.

"That sounds wonderful. Please- lead the way." Nala said, voice soft and husky in a way that more than proved she wasn't faking her interest in the man- her mind racing with further possibilities for pleasure.

Kaalth knew perfectly well that a lot of Orion women got off on having a man who would do whatever they wantedt, and the first time he'd set eyes on the copy of her when he walked into the Green Goddess, the first time he'd caught that faint whiff of her pheromones, he'd understood, for the first time, why a man would give up his reputation, his chance for a respectable marriage, for safety and home and children for the thrill of a few hours alone with a beautiful woman. That revelation had shaken him to his core, and he'd finally understood reasons why in his day and age well brought up young men were taught to keep their distance from strange women.

Not that he'd cared, of course. Even knowing that she was a copy- it had seemed worth it. Worth it to look for excuses to do things for her, to spend time around her-even though he'd barely dared to speak to her at first. Then he'd discovered that he wouldn't have to settle for being an hour's diversion for her. Instead the copy had been kind to him, and as gentle and sweet as his mother would have wished for him, and he'd resolved to win the real Nala for his own.

Now, intoxicated by her scent, he knew that he'd made the right choice once again. She was playing coy, wasn't pretending to be disinterested, instead her response was as clear and as honest as his own. Not to mention the fact that she'd offered to teach him, and had planned on doing so before she'd even met him.

And even if she changed her mind later, this was still worth it, Kaalth thought as she slipped her arm into his. He let out a little sigh as she touched his sensitized skin, even as lightly as this, but her request to go to the bazaar pulled him back to reality. Perhaps, though, it wouldn't be a very long trip to the bazaar, and then they could go back and....Right. Bazaar.

As they walked along, he tried to focus as best he could, tried to point out interesting shops, things she might like to look at or eat or that she might find amusing, but he found it hard to focus on anything other than Nala for more than a minute or two at a time. To the point that he didn't hear the first time that Millicent called out to him.

The second time, when she called louder "Kaalth! O! Kaalth, come over here!" he heard and started to walk over there, saying to Nala as they walked "Millicent owns a shop that deals in semi-precious stones and beads. She's nice, and some of the things she sells remind me of what I used to mine." as they approached, Millicent was revealed to be a grandmotherly looking woman , dressed in a black dress, that would have been plain if it hadn't been covered in black beads that made the whole thing shimmer like the skin of some exotic insect, with more of the same beads threading through the white hair that was piled on top of her head.

"Kaalth!" she said, smiling at him as they reached the counter "I'm glad I saw you! The thing you ordered" she cast a glance at Nala, revealing the reason why she was suddenly being unspecific "arrived, if you'd like to take it with you. And since you brought your lovely bride with you-"

At that Kaalth's face assumed a horrified expression and he said quickly "You're thinking of someone else. This is Nala, she just arrived in the Hub yesterday."

Which caused Millicent to grin even wider, and give Kaalth a conspiratorial wink "Oh, I apologize. Its a pleasure to meet you, my name is Millicent." she dropped her voice, and said conspiratorially to Kaalth "that was clever, young man. That way, you could be sure she'd like what you picked out. " raising her voice again "Still I imagine that she'll like those pearls just as well, and this strand is even nicer than the one I sold awhile back, so I'll just go grab them, shall I?" without another word, she darted into the back, leaving Kaalth and Nala standing there.

Nala knew she should actually pay attention to the bazaar- learn where things were- instead she caught herself watching Kaalth out of the corner of her eyes often during their walk. The small sigh he had given when she touched his arm was confirmation enough for her that his skin was actually quite sensitive- something she filed away for the moment while he continued to point things out.

She smiled at him when he explained the strange lady calling to them. "She sounds lovely." Nala offered softly even as she followed him to the booth- where her face quickly turned to a mask of shock. She tried to put the pieces together herself- this woman thought Nala was Kaalth's bride, Kaalth already knowing her favourite things- and making them the way Nala would. It wasn't a flattering picture of her date, so with a small purse of her lips she turned to stand in front of him, a hairsbreadth from pushing her body against his.

"Kaalth" Nala said, drawing his attention even as her pheromone production skyrocketed. The scent would make it that much harder for him to avoid saying anything but the truth. Her brow wrinkled slightly as she decided how to ask. "Why did she think I was your bride?" She settled on finally, laying a hand on his arm to draw on the sensitive skin. She met his eyes and schooled her face into a mild form of faked distress. "Will you explain for me?"

Nala waited in a pretence of patience- she would damn well ask this Millicent if she needed to- though it occurred to her with a bitter taste, that her cousin would likely have known whatever this situation was.

The afternoon had been going so well. Nala had liked his present, Nala had liked the garden, Nala had shown every sign of liking him. Then they'd stopped at this booth, and things had gone abruptly sideways.

Kaalth had hoped that Nala wouldn't attach any great significance to Millicent's words, or that she'd wait to question him until they were in a less public location, which would at least give him some time to get his thoughts in order. Clearly, the Goddess of Luck had no such mercy in store for him, because now she was standing in front of him lips pursed in annoyance, clearly wanting an explanation. Demanding an explanation, by the way that her pheromones spiked, and in a way that made him compliant, almost unable to disobey her words.

Then things got worse. Nala touched him and assumed an expression of distress that was at odds with her earlier flash of anger. That meant that she was putting up a wall between them, treating him like a client, like a mark, like an alien. That hurt. He knew he deserved it, but it still hurt. He wanted to lie, to say that Millicent had been mistaken, that she'd used the wrong word, to try to brush it off, but the combination of pheromones and guilt were too much and he couldn't lie.

Shamefaced, he dropped his eyes to the floor and answered her. "I'm sorry. You shouldn't have found out like this. There used to be-there was-before there was a copy of you here, in the Hub. The copy and I were-well, we were married, sort of. For a few months. I'm sorry."

Nala knew what she was doing would hurt- if he knew anything about the trade she and Jaya shared, he would know that Nala was treating him no longer as a date, but as an objective. A task. It hurt no less to see the look on his face at her change in attitude- something that reminded her all too well of past promises to not get attached so easily- something Nala was never actually good at remembering to do.

Still she bit the inside of her cheek and continued on, despite a small niggling part of her mind telling her to stop.

Her faux distress morphed into angry disgust. "Of course." Nala started evenly. "Makes perfect sense. I knew there had to be something wrong with you." She offered in a monotone fashion as she stepped backwards and cut off her pheromone production in a single move- turning herself to metaphorical ice to make it quite certain what she was feeling.

Nala swallowed hard, blinking away the prickling in her eyes- something that if she weren't restraining her scent so tightly, would have been a fruitless maneuver. She took a small breath, attempting to calm herself, but inevitably being unable to do so. Nala shook her head at Kaalth, face scrunching up in anger. "I've had men chase me because they couldn't have my cousin- or cousins. Or friends. But that's so much worse- you're chasing me because you couldn't keep an imitation of me." She said with a grimace.

"That's low." She said in a dark voice. Giving up on the situation altogether, she pushed him out of the way, pausing her storming off only for a moment. She looked back at him before sneering slightly and ripping the shawl off, throwing it in the mud, and letting her speedwalk turn into a run as she left.

Nala choked slightly on the tears she had been holding back- continuing to force them away because- well. Because she should have known better. Things never went her way. Nala knew she may as well be cursed- but something about this date hit harder than most. Maybe because she had actually been enjoying herself- actually thought that maybe Kaalth was worth spending time and energy on. Her run slowed to a stop as it occurred to her she'd still have to teach the man. That was a promise that she wouldn't break.

She let out a yell of frustration to the middle of nowhere as she realized how alone she was- and apparently would remain.

Kaalth didn't look up as she shut down her pheromones, but he was painfully aware of the sudden change, as she shut herself off from him even further. He wasn't sure if it was better or worse than it had been when she was treating him like a client, but it was bad. It underscored the disgust in her words, made the rejection complete.

"I'm sorry." he said again. It was all he could think of to say. When she told him how contemptible she found him, Kaalth wanted to protest, but what could he say? That her copy had been happy with him? That he'd sought her out because he'd decided that he wanted the real thing? None of that sounded like a defense, so he just said again "I'm sorry." Then she shoved past him and was gone.

A moment later Millicent came out, and he mechanically accepted the package, and explained that Nala had needed to leave suddenly, reassuring her that everything was fine in a distant, mechanical tone that the woman didn't believe but decided to accept. As he turned to go back, he saw the shawl laying in the mud and picked it up. As soon as he touched it, he knew that was a mistake. It smelled like Nala, like Nala when she was happy, like Nala when....When he'd been lying to her, Kaalth told himself severely. He'd done this to himself, he'd brought this on himself, and if it hurt him to carry the shawl back to her, it was no more than he deserved. Not that he expected that she'd want to keep it, but he couldn't let something she'd touched lay in the dirt of the bazar. So he folded the shawl over his arm, and set his feet on the way back to the Green Goddess, occasionally wiping away the tears that misted his vision.

As he walked back, he thought about his next step. It was unlikely that Nala would want him around, and she was Jaya's cousin. She had more of a right to be there than he did. So he'd leave. There was a flophouse that Death owned that he could stay in for a few days, while he found a job. Hopefully something that would get him out of the Hub for a long ass time.
