Kailani gripped her sister's arm tightly, grateful that she was maintaining her corporeal nature long enough for Kai to pull her through the portal. A warning cry from her inhuman aide allowed her to gather her pohaku along her arms into a shield. Slamming the two pieces together she watched with relief as the bullet passed right through her now intangible sister- even as the pain bit into her own form with a stifled scream.

Biting the tip of her tongue to draw her mind to a different pain, Kai pulled the now shattered crystal shield back into one shape as she waved her sister along. "Go!" She yelled. "Get to safety!" Kai's sister looks at her like she was expecting the hero say 'Just kidding!'

Or at least Diane gave her that look until the inhuman they knew only as Owl let out a piercing scream- three watchdogs tried to dive through the portal- and Blood splashed into Kai's hair. As the portal deformed into coloured glass, the surfer watched in horror as Owl's head slid from their neck. She was so distracted that she hardly even noticed that two of the three diving watchdogs made it through- or that one of them had only made it halfway through before the portal once again split the two realities. The choked gurgle however caught her attention as the front half of someone's father dropped to the ground, torn from his lower half.

Suddenly Diane understood that this was hardly a place for a 23 year old superhero- it was certainly not the place for a teenage sort of dead girl who could absolutely still be killed. The elder inhuman dive tackled one of the watchdogs as her sister ran off a little.

Kai almost sighed in relief- that was thrown off when her sister yelled back and turned towards the fight again. "IT'S OKAY! YOUR BOYFRIEND IS HERE!" Startled, she whipped her head around to see- Jake?!

Of course that moment was all it took for the woman she was straddling to nail Kai hard in the jaw hard enough to split her lip. Taking the momentum, she split free and rolled hard to the side. "SO HELP ME PUAHI DIANE MAHELONA GET TO SAFETY." She screamed back even as she took a careful stance, spitting to clear the blood from her mouth.

Shielding her face Kailani took a pause to smile at Jake. "I have questions- but I have never been happier to see a handsome man." Dodging a fist and swinging a crystal covered uppercut at the watchdog's stomach she laughed a little recklessly- fear still coating her every thought- but some comfort as well from the sight of the man with the glowing green lights. "And you've seen how happy I've been when we have met in the past."

The hub was amazing.

Jacob Alexander had learned to love the idea of having the entire universe at his fingertips as a Green Lantern. On Earth, his life hadn’t had much purpose. He went through the paces of all the things he had to do, but he was always wanting to wander. Camping trips, vacations, whatever excuse he could find, he was always off seeing something new, doing something new. Now? Going new places was essentially his job, policing the good of all the sentient races in a far-off sector of space where everything was new to him. He still hadn’t seen all the sights that Sector 0221 had to show, him, and now he was in a nexus of realities, where he could see different realities, different versions of even the things that were supposed to be familiar, things that would have even been impossible on his universe.

For example, did anyone on his Earth (or Oa) suspect that there was a universe where Earth’s and Mars’s debris fields had gotten mixed so that they’d formed into one larger planet, which had just enough more gravity that the humans of that world developed with four legs? Jacob had found one very lovely native of that world to let him investigate the effects of that phenomenon. Investigate it intimately.

And so, with two arms and four legs wrapped happily around his slumbering form, Jacob got a very unwelcomed wakeup call.

Incursion detected in specified coordinates.

“Shit,” Jacob muttered, stirring and extricating himself from the still drowsing woman. “Details. Is it an invasion force?”

Unknown. Registering new special anomaly and multiple lifesigns entering from target universe location.

Well, that was just great, wasn’t it. “Sorry to cut and run,” he said to the blearily blinking woman as his uniform formed around him and he reached through a small portal into a pocket dimension. “But duty calls.” Then, even before she’d really started brushing aside the dreams she’d been having, there was a flash of emerald energy, and man was gone.

* * *

“Scan the area for an invasion force,” he said as he dropped down through the sky from a mile above the new incursion.

Registering 4.5 human lifeforms.

That was… an odd answer, odd enough to make Jacob pause in his preparations to attack. “Four and a half?”

Correction: 4 human lifeforms. By formation, estimate 80% likelihood two are in pursuit, two are being pursued.

“Show me.” A green hologram appeared in front of him, showing two figures bearing down on… “Oh holy shit, Kai?” Oh no. No, that wouldn’t do. “Set the exit portal for a cutoff trajectory. I want to pass right between the pursuit and the targets.

Acknowledged.

A shimmering emerald portal opened in front of him in time to swallow him up in his vertical descent. At the same time, another portal opened at ground level, sending him shooting out of it at terminal velocity. His protective aura caused him to skim along the ground, taking on a subtle, practiced shape that gave him a bit of lift as well as he shot across the landscape. He passed right in front of the rearmost watchdog, throwing up a wide wall of green light in his wake that absorbed the weapon fire that he was aiming at the two women.

Jacob skidded to a stop, kicking up a cloud of dirt and rocks, in time to see Kai get clocked by the other one. Oh hell no, this was not going to happen… but then, Kai could take care of herself. Her sister, on the other hand… Jacob lashed out with his ring, latching onto the Watchdog he’d blocked and yanking him through the air to slam him into the ground. The man looked tough, and the signs of tech enhancements under his uniform told Jacob that this wasn’t going to be a cakewalk, but he did have the most powerful weapon in the universe on his side. At the same time, a protective dome formed over Kai’s sister, fixing her in place, but keeping the watchdogs away from her. “Questions are overrated,” he called back to her. “Nice to see you missed me. Can’t say much about this double date you set up, though!”

Kai let her shoulders relax infinitesimally- Jake had a way of reading the situation perfectly, and while Diane seemed less than pleased to be cooped up- the dome would keep her safe from the weapons she knew had hit the lovely ghost once or twice. Questions being completely put aside for the time being, she took a very brief moment to appreciate the sight of one of the watchdogs being flung before focusing on her own fight.

Kailani gathered the crystals back to her fist, biting back another curse of pain as she discovered that the watchdogs were wearing more than average body armour underneath their stupid uniforms. The woman she was fighting gave her a very pointed grin- Kai wondered for a moment whether she was supposed to turn this into an expression off? Did this woman want to pose to the death? Rolling her eyes, the surfer continued her attack.

Aiming a kick at the woman's knees, Kai cried out in frustration as she found the watchdog was so well armoured she wouldn't give at all under Kailani's blunt attacks- so be it. If the surfer didn't need to defend from more than one side, she would take her time. Looping an arm around the woman's neck, she started the slow process of making the woman pass out from oxygen deprivation.

Putting the pressure on, she found herself gasping for breath as she remained sort of still for the first time that day. Kai stood behind the watchdog to avoid the flailing arms and legs, though a couple lucky hits knocked the air right back put of her lungs. Clearing her throat, and running her tongue along her teeth to clean them of blood she offered a tired amusement in Jake's direction. "Aw, and I thought company might spice things up." She replied. "How about this, you can plan the next date." Kai said with a laugh.

"How dare you, you fucking animal! How dare you touch me with your filthy hands?!" Screamed the watchdog in Kai's care.

Kai groaned and rolled her eyes again. "Yes, please go ahead and waste the oxygen you have left." She muttered softly, glancing again at her sister and Jake. Thankfully, her sister was still safe, and Jake was Jake- Kai knew he could handle himself. Glancing at the green clothed man she bit back a smirk. "So how's your day been so far?" She asked with a laugh that was cut short as she got another elbow to the stomach. This woman seemed to be slowing with her attacks but Kai was still uncertain how much longer this might take.

“Got a really funny wake-up, here, but you know how that goes, right?” he shot back at her, finding time to smirk through the banter over at the other woman… who was having a hard time hurting the soldier. Apparently, ringslinging made this easier than… stone… smashing? He’d have to come up with a witty name for Kai’s power later. Right now, it was the middle of a fight, and he had to turn it.

All right, armored enemies. He’d dealt with that before, he’d seen other people do that before. He imagined the Stone-beasts of Mallock VI, and remembered the guns that the natives used to hunt them, weapons that used the tightly-packed atomic structure of dense materials to conduct a plasma charge rather than relying on standard weapon discharges. That would make the armor a hindrance instead of a help, now, wouldn’t it? “Think fast, Surfer Girl!” he shouted, a rifle coming into being from the green light of his ring and sailing through the air toward Kai. “Ah ah ah, no stealing, demerits for bad manners,” he added as the gun sailed wide around the watchdog, who made a grab for it as it flew past her.

“Ring, where’s the incursion point?” he muttered as he held up his fist, emerald light coalescing into a gun turret which began firing at the other watchdog as he staggered to his feet. This gave him a few moments to focus on the problem of getting these guys out of here as he focused on returning fire at the construct.

Incursion point no longer detected.

“That’s… dammit, scan the area for weak points in the dimensional space. The hole they came through has to be here somewhere.” He could, of course, always drop them into the portal he did know about, but he didn’t want to risk them figuring out where a stable portal was, now, did he? Louder, he called over his shoulder as he glanced at Diane. “How are you doing back there, you okay? Yeah? Bored? Sorry, we’ll finish the light work soon.” After another thought, he expanded the size of the dome and created a glowing jade puppy in there, that wagged its tail at the girl. See? Now she had company. Not so bad, right? “You just relax, we’ve got this.”

Kai grinned as Jake brought up some memories that were more than worth a smile. "Hey." She called back, enjoying the banter. "At least I officially don't work for Stark Industries anymore." The inhuman replied, knowing he would understand what she was referring to. "Besides I'm sure anyone in said bed will still be there when you get back. Or not." She blew a kiss. "If you don't get back right away."

Her grin grew a bit crazed as she dropped her still flailing enemy and grabbed the flying weapon, aiming the rifle first at her charge. Pulling the trigger, Kai laughed in minor shock as the woman dropped. "Oh you do know how to treat a woman." She purred back to Jake- she understood the constructs didn't last but Mercy were they fun to play with. Kai turned the sights on the man Jake was playing with to see him knocked down every time he got up- Jake obviously didn't need help. With a side thought Kai shot the female watchdog as she tried to stand up.

Pulling all five pohaku from her skin in their distinct orblike forms, Kai shot them forward to create the most uncomfortable restraints she could manage- solid stone around the woman's wrists, binding them to each other and to her ankles. That completed, the surfer went and sat down on the flailing woman to wait patiently. Jake seemed to know what he was doing so she was content to sit there until she had something to do. Her sister was obviously less so since she rolled her eyes at the puppy, went noncorporeal and ducked through the ground to get around the dome- an action which was met with a strong glare from the rocky superhero. Diane quickly reversed back into the dome and played with the cute creature inside.

"So." Kai offered finally. "Have we got a plan?"

“Brilliant idea here, why don’t you scan where the other half of an intruder is laying,” he suggested, irritably, to his ring.

Detecting spatial anomaly in target area. Estimate 98% probability that it is the incursion point.

“Yeah,” Jacob answered, “We do have a pl-“ He broke off as the turret finally lost cohesion under the extended fire from the other watchdog and a few rounds came at him, bouncing off his protective aura. He threw up a wider wall to block the shots, a wall that moved forward, then wrapped itself around the watchdog, encasing him in viridian energy for just the moment. “Plan. God damn, you have some annoying friends, you know that?” He threw his fist up, focusing his ring on the area above the half-body that had lain mostly forgotten in the dirt. Most lanterns knew how to fly in and wreak havoc, how to make the right construct for maximum damage or restraint. Jacob? Jacob knew portals. Well, and the stuff the other lanterns did, but this was kind of his specialty.

Spatial anomaly targeted.

Target dimension found. Locking on.

An emerald portal opened up, right where the last one had been. A giant green shovel, connected to Jacob’s ring by a thin green stream of power, scooped up the dead watchdog, dumping it unceremoniously through. “The plan is, let’s send these assholes home. You got that one?” Expanding from his ring, a suit of power armor formed from green light, and Jacob stared down the other. “Because I’m sick of toying around with this one.” Charging down the watchdog which had mostly broken free of the hold of the wall wrapped around it, Jacob slammed a gauntleted fist into his face, seized him by the shoulders, and hurled him toward the portal.

Kai raised a neatly cared for eyebrow, having nothing to do while Jake finished whatever he was doing- which seemingly involved yelling at his ring. She wouldn't judge however considering he had come and saved her bacon (and looked hot as fuck in doing so, her traitorous mind offered. Not that she was complaining- especially because it was very true.) While she had been not paying attention, the watchdog she was on top of had started flailing again- even snapping a fee bites at Kai's hand. She pressed the woman's head into the vaguely bloody dirt while Jake replied to her question. "I don't know that I'd call them friends- I mean they obviously want to be considering how much they've been following me." She offered with a one shoulder shrug.

The surfer watched in awe as the portal opened- frozen in amazement for a moment until Jake commented about her dance partner. Blinking back to reality Kai stood up and lifted the struggling woman like she weighed nothing and simply tossed her through the hole- pulling her pohaku back to herself before they fell with the watchdog back into their home dimension. Watching as it closed before either watchdog could get back, Kai nearly fell over from relief.

Taking a deep breath, she wiped as much blood from her face as she could before turning to Jake and throwing herself at him. Kailani hugged like there was no tomorrow- though she remained conscious of her ability to break his ribs so she restrained herself. "Thank you. For helping me keep my sister safe." She murmured into his chest where she had pressed her face.

"I'm going to kiss you now." She offered with a smile as she loosened her hug- ignoring Diane making faces at her in the background- and pulled his face down to where she could reach it if she stood on her toes. Kai let him off with a relatively short kiss- she figured he probably wouldn't be super thrilled by the broken lip (even if it had started to knit itself back together and wasn't bleeding anymore.) of course relatively was the key word there considering Kai had absolutely zero interest in tiny pecks.

"Mercy you are just about the greatest sight for sore eyes, you know that?"

Well, that worked well enough, didn’t it? Both of the watchdogs back through the portal, Jacob aimed his ring at the portal, pulling back the energy holding it open. The portal wavered for a moment, like a television signal going to static, then evaporated into incoherent energy, but not before someone on the other side tried getting back through, as evidenced by the severed arm that lay there once the portal vanished, cutting it off from the rest of its body. “Was that…”

Genetic scan reading affirmative for previous target.

“Huh. Guess some people can’t take a hint,” he said, aiming his ring and blasting the detached limb, atomizing it and leaving just a scorched outline on the ground where it had been. “Well, that settles that, I guess. What was that all abou-“ Jacob was cut off as he found her body impacting his, his arms reflexively closing around her too. “Hey, no problem,” he said, noting that his protective aura came up again under the pressure of her arms. Good lord, this girl had some strength. “Couldn’t just let those assholes go giving you a beatdown I’m assuming you didn’t deserve, can I?” He didn’t know this for a fact, after all, but he could give her the benefit of the doubt (and admit to himself that he’d back her up even if she did deserve it).

When she announced her kiss, he smirked back at her. “What, are we announcing things now?” He kissed her back with complete enthusiasm for the act. No, the blood and her injuries might not make things ideal, but since becoming a Green Lantern, Jake had been through three galactic wars, one involving a shitton of super-powered zombies. An inordinate amount of the girls he’d kissed had been in situations moderately similar to this.

He grinned as she pulled back, shrugging in mock innocence. “I’ve heard that maybe once or twice,” he admitted. People did tend to sing their thanks to whatever gods they held when a Green Lantern showed up on the scene of their tragedy. “Can’t say you were who I was expecting to be pushing through here, though. I’m sure not complaining, though.” Which, of course, raised a couple questions, namely why and how she’d come through, but he figured she’d get to that.

Kai watched in fascination as the portal closed- even as she choked down some macabre laughter at the dismembered arm. The inhuman almost managed the task until she heard Jake's remark and fell into entirely inappropriate giggles, relieved when her sister did the same. So at least she wasn't the only nut in the loony bin- Good enough for Kai. And the hot guy obliterated the limb so that was positive- no trauma for any children or what not in the hub.

Getting her laughter at least under control, the inhuman made a happy noise at the returned embrace- it was kind of finally hitting home that she was safe- that her sister was safe. It was for the best that Jake was there, because Kai had more adrenaline than she had any idea what to do with.

She stuck her tongue out at his remark about announcing things- but like the few times they had met previously, she liked his mouth too much to give it up to sass him. With a sigh though she did step back to answer his questions rather than ignoring them.

Humming for a second she finally explained it as briefly as she knew how. "There was a space asshole- I helped beat him and his crew up slash protected people from him- got outed as Inhuman- and then the fellows who you just drop kicked back home deciding that meant they could help us towards extinction." Kai grinned and leaned back in to nip at Jake's ear. "I'm sure you remember me discussing that at our first meeting?"

When she started relating what had happened, Jacob started nodding. Space asshole. Yeah, that tracked, that was who he’d been afraid had been pushing through, but thankfully it hadn’t been. He didn’t know if he could have done anything about that guy, the guy was supposed to be crazy powerful by everything he’d been able to figure. On the other hand, he was a Green Lantern. It would have, at least, been a fight to see.

On the other hand, the rest of what she said just seemed… weird. Sure, there were groups that had gone watching metas on Earth, from what he’d been able to keep track of. They had watched the Aliens, they’d watched the metas, but superheroes were superheroes. Aside from when Checkmate had gone nuts, from what he’d been told, there hadn’t been anything like that on his world, had there? Being assigned to a different space sector had its drawbacks. “Your world is weird,” he said, shaking his head. “Well… screw them. I don’t think they’re going to get back through there. The portal seems to be sealed up completely,” he said, scanning the air with his ring again.

He looked at the air she’d (presumably, he admittedly hadn’t seen it) come through, then looked at her. “So… are you going to want to go back, or are you going to stay here, or…” He glanced at her little sister, then back at her. Her sister… complicated things. If it were just her, he’d have had a lot of ideas about what she could do, involving a lot of trips into space in his own universe. With her sister… well, he wasn’t sure what she wanted to do there. Still, if she’d been being hunted… “Nah, you don’t want to go back. Come on, let’s get away from here,” he said, opening a portal toward the inside of the Hub. “Oh, hey, by the way?” He grabbed her hand as they started walking toward the portals, “I’m going to kiss you now.” He figured he had this coming, right? He’d saved her, he got to kiss her… and so he did, again, enthusiastically. And, since now her sister wasn’t in a position to see… “Oh, and now?” he whispered, once they were catching their breath again, “I’m going to grab your ass.” Which, of course, he did. Announcing things was apparently the thing to do, right?

Kai snorted at the understatement. "Weird yes. I suppose you must be from a different world- which makes you plenty weird too you know." She offered with a bit of a cheeky grin, that made it perfectly clear that she didn't really care and was still riding an adrenaline high. He seemed like he still had questions to ask- but Jake had a good sense of timing and seemed to realize that she needed to get away from there right then.

Preferably into a hot shower.

Preferably with him for company.

A thought that was reinforced when he kissed her again- Mercy did she like the way he curved when he bent to meet her lips. She didn't like being short- but she supposed there were some benefits if she got to see him chase her lips like this every time he wanted attention. Kai let loose a small chuckle as his hands drifted lower. "Take your time hero- I'm in no hurry." With a glance at her sister who was making gagging motions she added a grin and additional remark. "Though if you wanted to help me find some daycare to drop her off at first- I'm in no hurry to let her get lost in our first day in the new place."

Right. Her kid sister was there. He really needed to behave himself for a little bit. At the moment, what was he going to do with them? “All right,” he said, “Let’s… get somewhere quiet, somewhere that we can think.”

Not many people really thought about ‘up’ in the Hub. He’d heard theories that the planar structure of the place was at odd angles to itself, so that you could end up in a different borough one day and keep going in your own the next, but he tried not to think too hard about that. His ring, apparently, understood it, and that was enough to get him around. Anyway, regardless of that, there was an ‘up’ in the Hub, at least in the central area of it, and that was where the Green Lantern Sector House X was located. Constructing it, after the area through the portal the Guardians had discovered had been explored (by him), had been accomplished the way the Guardians constructed everything: Mysteriously and quickly. In theory, it was a sector house for between universes, to monitor the traffic between worlds. In theory, any Lantern could come stay here when passing through or staging an operation, hell in theory one from any universe probably could. In practice? It had been his solitary home since he got here, when he chose to use it.

He encased his two passengers in a green bubble as he pulled all of them through another portal, bringing them out high enough over the Hub to function as orbit and flying them the rest of the way up there, receiving recognition from the sector house on the way. “All right. I don’t really know if I’m supposed to have guests up here, but my bosses won’t be checking in on me tonight, so it should be okay,” he said. “So yes. This is an alien station that we built in this crazy not-world that you got into, and I’m still trying to figure out how the hell you got in here.” He landed them inside the airlock, let the scanners scan them for contaminants, then cut off the bubble in the very, very green structure. “Rooms are that way, kitchen is that way, and the crazy alien game room is that way,” he said, hoping that would draw off her sister so that they could actually get a few minutes to talk about what the hell they were going to do. He could put her up for a few days, probably, but there was a very real possibility that the Guardians were keeping tabs on this house, which was most of the reason why he hadn’t rented out rooms to crazy hot alien girls so far. He could justify a few days to them, but long-term? Sadly, no, he couldn’t.

Once her sister had given in to her impulse to explore, Jacob waited until she was in another room, then glanced up at the ceiling. “System control, monitor non-corps activity. Restrict exit access and classified computer access.” That done, he looked at Kai, giving her a lopsided smile. “All right, consider that daycare dealt with for now. Want to get yourself cleaned up and patched up? Maybe figure out what the hell you’re going to do now?”

Kai nodded distracted, pinching her sister when she went to start talking. Sure, the surfer trusted Jake, but she didn't want to be distracted from what was going on since she would have to find her way around later. An intent that quickly became irrelevant as Jake showed exactly how he had arrived so quickly. Portals were a lot harder to use as a map since she couldn't duplicate them.

Once they were in what looked like orbit, she raised an eyebrow. "Bosses huh?" Kai questioned offhand, knowing that being the one who had been chased down by heavily armed folk left the bulk of question answering for her- still she was hoping she would get some answers as well. Like why he had a space base. And how he could teleport. "Alien is relative." She added without thinking.

Kai blew out a breath with a pout. She wasn't ready to talk about her friend's death- but Jake deserved an explanation. "I was friends with an inhuman who called themself Owl- because their portals were only big enough to watch." She started to explain before the scanner started having conniptions- it had passed over Jake once and been content, but the damn thing scanned the two inhumans over and over before finally chirping an acceptance. Kai blew out a breath of relief- grateful that the building hadn't just shot them out into space. Her sister would have been okay but Kai still required air to function.

She shook her head slightly to return to her explanation even as she noticed Diane charging off towards the game room. Kai snickered slightly and rushed out the rest of the explanation so she could get back to other things she'd rather be doing. Namely Jake. "They didn't know what this place- this hub?- was but they knew there were no watchdogs, and that meant it was safer than our universe. We were on the run for a week while we bonded- which allowed me to amp Owl so the portal would be big enough for someone to go through."

She paused and added the final remark quietly. "Owl's head was taken off by a watchdog, which is why the portal suddenly cut off, chopping one of the idiots following us in half."

Kai remained a little solemn while he dealt with- corps?- business- of course until he offered her a shower. That made a smile crack on her face. "Oh I thought you'd never offer. I have never longed for a shower more." She said thinking of the past week of hiding without proper facilities. Kai took a few steps towards the direction she had been given before looking back and rolling her eyes when she saw how stationary he remained.

Striding back over quickly, hips swaying as she went, Kai crossed to where Jake was standing. Pressing herself against his chest, she reached back and pulled her hair from its bun. She smiled wickedly up at him as she shed her jacket as well before grabbing his shirt and walking backwards. Kai added a remark in case her implication had been too subtle. "Of course, I think I may need some help. Just to be sure I don't miss a spot. Think you could lend me a hand or two hero? Or do you have more important things to attend to?" She sent a heated glance up through her lashes in punctuation and softly bit her tender but mostly healed lip to hold herself back for the moment. In case he really did have to say no.

Of course he had gone out of his way to get her sister out of the room so they could have some time... And he had already finished commanding his relativelg important instructions to the building's computer...

But then, no one knew how to tease Kai like Jake did, so she'd hold judgement until she got a firm answer.

Okay, so she did know what sort of place she was in. That was good, if only to keep him from having to explain so much of the place to her. He had to briefly wonder if she’d had to leave behind one of her… glowy stones (he couldn’t remember what the word was for them, he’d been kind of distracted when she told him the first time) if it had been hooked to this Owl guy, but he figured if she had a problem, she’d tell him. “Well, there are other portals to get here, but you kind of have to know where to look to find them. Little bit of a chance that some of those assholes might come through later, I guess.”

One in twelve million calculated chance, based on-

Jacob stopped paying attention to the mental cues that the ring was giving him, not really needing to know the methodology here. “Really low chance of it, less than getting hit by lightning twice, and then? You’re just one person in the middle of a bunch of other weirdos here.” So, the point was, for all intents and purposes? She was completely off their radar unless she decided to go back.

He had been hoping that she wasn’t going to be shy just because her little sister was around somewhere, and her answer didn’t disappoint him. Granted, he still had been holding out some hope that he’d manage to get a quick shower sometime, since he’d come straight from bed to respond to the alert, but… well, she was heading to the shower, too, right? Why not multitask? He started debating, very briefly, on whether or not he was above taking advantage of this woman in her vulnerable state, and as he watched her hips swaying on her way back to him, he decided that no, he was not even close to being above that. “I can’t think of anything more important than helping,” he answered, that familiar surge of adrenaline, which still hadn’t quite died, rushing back to full force.

He led her back through his quarters, which locked behind them, to where his shower was. “Of course… I don’t know, maybe this isn’t the way to treat the damsel in distress,” he teased, walking up behind where she’d ended up in front of the mirror, standing just too close for it to be easy for her to focus on an answer. “Are you sure that I don’t need to give you time to get yourself together?” he asked, leaning forward, his eyes darting between the curve of her neck and the reflection of her face in the mirror, “Keep from being taken advantage of by strange men?” Of course, if he was going to let her send him away, why did his lips brush over the crook of her neck while he waited for an answer?
