Mercy hadn't contacted Remy, neither had Henri, because those were the terms and, especially early on, it had seemed best to stick to the spirit of the rules surrounding Remy's exile. But that didn't mean that she hadn't kept up with Remy's life, especially when "Gambit's" exploits started to be reported occasionally. So she'd known that he was doing well, and had taken some comfort in his success. Which didn't mean that she hadn't missed him, of course.

"O'course we will want yo' t'help in her trainin'." Mercy replied "Dat est de reason fo' an 'prenticeship, so dat de child do no' learn jus' from dere Pere an' Maman." exile or no, she wasn't going to prevent Remy from participating in Sabine's training. "Besides, Ah want Sabine t'know her uncle, de last time yo' saw her, she was jus' a babette. "

"Honorable, oui." Mercy replied "Well-behaved?" she snorted with derision at the statement. "Oui, Ah know dat Jean-Luc es a good boy, but dat does no' mean dat he does no' have de devil in him. Tante Matti, she say dat et es a good t'ing dat boy has a tail. Et give yo' somet'in' t'grab on when he es movin' too fast t'grab his ear." Not that they'd grab onto his tail and yank, but it was as sensitive as a finger, which meant that a good firm grasp was enough to get the boy's attention.

Remy hadn't reached out to his brother or sister in law for much the same reasons. It was a lonely life, but he'd tried to make to best of it. He had stayed productive, if nothing else. He had experienced no small success, but if given the choice between that success and going home to his family? Remy would go home every time, hands down.

Of course. Mercy seemed sure, but Remy couldn't be. Henri had every reason to keep his daughter's reputation as far away from Remy's as possible, and Remy wouldn't blame his brother in the least. Especially when it came to apprenticing. “Oh, I don' t'ink t'pprentice her, Mercy, jus'... mebbe give her some pointers, oui? Help her improve some.” Unofficial help from unnamed sources weren’t uncommon or out-of-bounds within the Guild, after all. “Dat es kind o' yo’, Mercy. I would like t' know her." He wasn't sure if it were wise, but Remy wanted his family... So, so much.

Remy's eyes were alight with amusement when mercy snorted. He knew it wasn't so apt a description, but.... "I did no’ say always well-behaved,” the chuckle that followed was choked off at the mention of Tante Matti; the old woman held an almost sacred place of honor in Remy’s world. Her word had always been Law. Not to say that Remy had never been caught by the ear.. "He listens t'Tante Matti, oui?” Everyone listened to Tante Matti… Even their Pere...

"Sabine es no' ready to be wit' one Master T'ief, no' yet." Mercy said "Dat will be a year, mebbe even two. But until den, she es being sent 'round t'learn and try differnt t'ings. An et would be no' bad t'ing, if Robert Lord decided t'take her on as a 'prentice. An' if he do no' do dis, well, den her Uncle Remy can show Sabine how t'do a few little t'ings, non?" she smiled "Et es jus' sensible, Ah want ma Sabine t'learn from de best."

"O' course he respects Tante Matti, and he listen t'her. He never climb on somet'in' after she has tol' him to no' climb on et." Mercy smirked "De only problem es dat dere es so very many t'ings fo' de boy t'climb on."

Ah. well that made more sense, if Sabine weren't ready for an actual apprenticeship... Remy was free to quietly help her if they didn't mind.

Robert Lord had joined the Guild a little more than a year after Remy had been exiled, and he had tested through the ranks quickly and quietly. A soft-spoken, introverted-seeming man, Lord was never seen at the LeBeau mansion, and was rarely within the city, but he had a habit of offering assistance and constructive criticism to the newer, younger members of the Guild, to those who had come in from the streets. He paid his dues faithfully, but he had not yet ever taken on an apprentice. Perhaps Sabine would be the first. Of course, that would be perfectly acceptable, where an apprenticeship with her uncle would not be. Exiles weren't encouraged to be... Involved like that. "Perhaps Monsieur Lord would be willing, oui?”

Only three members of the Guild or family knew the truth of Robert Lodj
Jean-Luc, Henri, and Mercy. Remy knew, of course he did, but Remy didn’t count, seeing that it was his secret to keep.

"Bien." It would not have spoken well of Jean-Luc if he disrespected
Tante Matti. “Well, yo' Canno' blame a boy fo' tryin', non?"

"Dat would be tres bien, if he would do such a t'ing." Mercy replied. Which reminded her of Henri's solution to the problem of Remy moving in with them. She hadn't mentioned it at first, because it wasn't her favorite solution-she wanted to share a house with Remy, not one of his personas, but..."An' perhaps Robert Lord might want t'move in t'de Lebeau Maison as well. If Remy Lebeau prefers to stay in his own flat, well, we will have an extra guest room, non?"

"Non, Ah do no' blame de boy." Mercy smirked "He can no' help bein' a Lebeau, after all. But he es a good boy. Jus' int' mischief."

''Et es possible. Likely long past time he take on a apprentice.” They didn’t want Robert Lord to gain a reputation for refusing to take any apprentices on, after all. He could be picky, but the daughter of the heir to the patriarchy? That would be an honor that no thief should turn down...

Remy stilled at Mercy's words, eyes on her for a long moment as he considered what she had said. Really, his brother approaching him with such an idea would have gone over better, not because Mercy didn’t hold every bit as honored a place in his heart, but… But she really didn’t, not quite. Mercy was well loved by Remy, and very respected, but Henri was on a pedestal that not even his wife could reach. Still… He frowned, “Yo’ would give another my own room, Soeur?”

They both knew who Robert Lord really was, but others didn’t. And others would see Mercy LeBeau give away Remy’s room to a thief Remy had never met. The room had remained untouched during Remy’s long exile, just as he had left it, and not because he’d trapped it; he hadn’t. Remy trusted his family enough to leave his door unlocked and unguarded, he had nothing to hide, not from them. The lock, if it were engaged, was less an obstacle and more a warning that he was using his room, and likely had company, nothing more. “Are dere no other rooms Monseiur Lord could use?”

With a nod, Remy shrugged, “Et comes wit’ de territory, non? We all find our own mischief. S’long as he respects Tante Matti an’ his mere et pere, et gran’pere…” Then yes, Jean-Luc was a good boy. And Remy’s tone made it clear that he expected no less from the son of Henri and Mercy LeBeau.

"Bien." Mercy replied "So Robert Lord will met de fille, an' if he t'ink dat he'll make a good teacher fo' her, den he might take her on as a 'prentice. if he t'ink dat she has potential o' course." since the selection of an apprentice was a seriously matter, on both sides. It wasn't just a question of status or even ability, it was also important that both teacher and pupil be compatible.

Mercy knew that Henri had a closer place in Remy's heart, but she also knew that a suggestion from him would be almost an order, and she'd wanted it to be Remy's choice, not something that he did because he felt compelled to do so. "Non!" she exclaimed "We would no' put anyone en yo' room, Remy. But dere es no shortage of rooms en de maison, non? We'd put Lord en one o' dem, yo' see?" not sure how she'd managed to give Remy the wrong impression, but wanting to correct it. She wouldn't want anyone to get the impression that Remy was being regarded callously by his family after all.

Remy shifted slightly, but he nodded, “Oui. Dat can be arranged.” Remy was every bit as serious as Mercy was about this; he would not, during a conversation such as this one, acknowledge being Robert Lord, but at the same time, they both knew the truth of the matter. Speaking in code, never acknowledging just who Robert Lord was, kept it safer. For all of them. The LeBeau family had plausible deniability, and Remy would fight to keep it that way lest the honor of their family be tarnished. But the idea of taking on his niece as an apprentice under the pseudonym… It was tempting, so tempting, and it seemed as though he’d have the approval from both of her parents…

He would meet with her as Robert Lord and see how the girl was. The worst that would happen was that they wouldn’t be all that good a match.

The idea of coming home, even as someone else, made Remy’s heart ache. He wouldn’t give up his apartment, of course not, but that was a place to be Remy LeBeau, not Robert Lord or Sir Elles, and he wasn’t ready or willing to give that up. He asked about giving the room up because she had said they’d have a room for Robert Lord if Remy refused to come home. But he didn’t disbelieve her when she said she wouldn’t give his room away. He moved to hug her, smiling, “Bien.” He grinned to her when he pulled away, “Et mus’ be very dusty en dere, non?” There was no bitterness or even sadness, only humor in his eyes as he chuckled.

Mercy nodded "Bien. She will be comin' here in a few months, an she will be meetin' all of de members of de Guild who is here. Both her uncle an' Monsuier Lord included, et would no' do t'leave either one of them out." because she wasn't about to make so obvious a slip and accidentally blow an identity Remy had been using for so very long.

When Remy hugged her, she squeezed him tight. It felt good to be close to her brother in law after so many years, to feel like the hole that had been in their family for so very long had been mended. "Do yo' t'ink dat Tante Mattie would allow a room in de house t'get dusty? Do yo' t'ink dat dis Mercy would allow et t'happen either." she wasn't truly offended, but it was amusing to pretend offense.

Remy nodded slowly, not entirely certain it would be a good idea for Sabine to meet him. He trusted Mercy and Henri to make the right decisions for their daughter, this wasn’t about meeting the exiled LeBeau, but rather he wondered if, being a clever LeBeau herself, Sabine might realize who Robert Lord actually was upon meeting him, especially after having met her estranged uncle. But then, maybe her parents had opted to tell her. Or would decide to tell her. If her parents decided she could handle it, then he’d respect that. He just wouldn’t make that decision for them.

Even when he’d been living at home in the mansion under Tante Matti’s loving ministrations of food and more food, Remy had been lean, and that hadn’t changed. He was built of hard, lithe muscle, not thin enough to worry anyone and obviously healthy. It did feel good to hug his sister in law again, to be close to family again. It had been so long, and it had been lonely, even if he hadn’t always been alone. But now, he had Mercy, and he had Henri, and soon his niece would be here, and even if he wouldn’t be her mentor as himself it would be good to spend time with her.

With a quiet chuckle, he shook his head, “Non, yo’ are right, Soeur, Tante Matti an’ yo’ would never let a room grow dusty.” He leaned to kiss her temple, “I expect dat my room would look exactly de way I left et.”
