The thing was, Phil really simple, inoffensive, easy going person. That didn't negate the fact that he was also very dangerous, and very good at his job. Normally, that inoffensiveness was a weapon of its own, one that let him go into places and do things that needed to be done, but in this case, it was clearly making the man in front of him more paranoid. So Phil dropped the friendly mask, and slipped into what Clint liked to call 'Agent Mode'-which still wasn't confrontational, but it was calm, collected and serious, with just a sliver of steel in his tone.

"I'm sorry you had a bad experience." Phil said "But I'm not him. I don't send my people in uninformed and unprepared. If that had been me, you'd have been able to put me down before someone got hurt. I'm not a threat to you, or anyone you care about. I'm exploring this place to keep from going stir-crazy while Tony Stark figures out a way for us to move between worlds, then I"m going to get my people and go home. "

Phil filed away the information about the ghost, and didn't inquire further, lest he create a new source of confrontation.

When he slipped into his less friendly face Safi conversely relaxed slightly, he could and did understand this better. The tone reminded him of the senior Mossad he'd dealt with, the ones that would throw you into the wood chipper but would tell to your face what you were being sent to die for and why. He'd always been prepared to die for his people with out knowing the reasons, but he respected the handlers and commanders that told him up front that he was being used.

It was honest. And sometimes all you had was that one precious commodity to hold onto.

Which was why when his wife cheated on him Safi had felt the betrayal of the lie harder than the act.

A slightly more friendly smile touched his lips, “So where is your team?” He slipped the rifle case over the counter, taking the chit back from him. His personal weapon snug under his arm. “Lunch?” He offered “or do you hand to hand after?” That could get interesting.

Phil noticed that 'Agent Mode' seemed to relax the other man, and continued the conversation in the same tone. After all, it was as natural to him as any other face he had, and, like his cheerful, friendly blandness, it was the truth. It was part of who he was, even if it wasn't all of him. And at this moment, it was the most useful part.

"Lets have lunch first." Phil said "I like to unwind after I've been on the range. Hand to hand after makes my body think that things are for real." which would leave him keyed up for a good long time, and he didn't need that. More than that, it wouldn't be useful right now. "Besides, talking about where my team is-that is a bit complicated. I'm between teams at the moment. The team I used to have got dissolved. It was a small team-a infiltration and hand to hand specialist, a sniper and me. The three of us got put on other assignments, I handled other agents, but that was my team." he shook his head, a bit ruefully "When I decided to come here, following my sniper and the rest of our people, the Director said my judgement was compromised. So when I go home, I get to pick a new team." he walked along side the other man, heading out of the range.

“Yes.” Safi agreed a grin pulling at the corner of his mouth “but can be...interesting to feel again. I've been private perhaps too long.” Safi didn't have the blood lust he'd occasionally seen in other members of his units, but part of him did miss the feeling of usefulness, hyper awareness that being in a firefight gave. He remembered the pain, the fear, the grief of battle but he also remembered the feeling of being fully alive.

The agent was right however, he was already fighting becoming too paranoid in this place.

...if there was such a thing.

Safi snorted, “Compromised maybe, but if you didn't come after your people what kind of team leader would you be?” Safi rolled his shoulder shifting the holster into better place, and working out the small ache he shouldn't really feel at his age.

“So name?” Safi asked curiously walking just out of touching distance beside him.

"There isn't anything like it, is there?" Phil said, understanding "Its why I keep looking for ways to keep going into the field, when I'd probably do as much good as a desk jockey. But I've learned the hard way that it's a nice place to visit, and not such a nice place to live, so today, I think taking a break is the best idea." that and the fact that Phil wasn't as young as he used to be, and although he kept himself in good condition, pushing hard every day wasn't a good idea. Better save it for when he actually needed to run at 100% capacity.

"Oh, I'd have come anyway." Phil said "But he was right, I wouldn't have come the second the portal generator was finished and without a team if Clint hadn't also been missing. Up until that point, Director Fury was ok with ignoring the fact that I'd been romantically involved with my sniper for years." Phil still felt a little odd making the admission, after so long hiding his relationship for so long, but now there was no reason to hide. "There are some stupid things you'll only do for love." if he was going to admit to the relationship, Phil was also going to make sure that everyone understood that his relationship with Clint was serious, not some post-mission FWB casualness.

"Sorry, my name's Phil. Phil Coulson." he said, holding out his hand to shake.

“Wasem, Robert Safi. Major. late of the IDF. But you knew that.” He guessed shaking the other man's hand. “And how did the rest of you team deal with you and your sniper?” He asked because honestly? That was the only thing that would have bothered him, if it interfered in the unit dynamics.

The IDF was a fully integrated combat force, he'd served with, under and commanded mixed forces. Sex was a more common problem, and it could also be dealt with in unit.

Love was well and good but if it disrupted team dynamics it was time for a transfer.

"Captain, U.S. Army. Retired." Phil said, "If we're exchanging ranks along with names." when Safi asked how Natasha had handled it, he gave a little snort of laughter "Natasha was fine with it." he said "In fact, she figured it out before either one of us did. She's like a sister to both of us." no reason to throw in the detail about Clint and Natasha having been lovers for a hot minute, that made the whole thing sound more like a soap opera than it really was. "That was one of the reasons I got to stay their handler. Why I was willing to stay in that position, once he and I were involved."

Safi eyeballed him, “not Ranger?” It was actually mildly rude to ask, at least on his world if it wasn't offered, but he was curious and perhaps the same etiquette didn't apply. “Captain.” He nodded, “I was a Major for all of a week before my discharge, bumped me as a courtesy.” He admitted easily, he'd been happy at his rank, and young enough for it, moving up to Major would have been early for him and moved him away from ground ops if he'd still been in the service.

Safi nodded, “that small of a unit…” he shrugged eloquently “casual happens much, long term..less but if stable?” He opened the door for them both, “why rock boat of a smooth operating unit.”

Glancing around as they came to the street Safi gestured for Phil to lead, “you have place in mind?”

Phil hadn't mentioned it mainly because, as a former Ranger, he found bragging about having been Special Forces to be a bit...tacky. But the man had asked, and the question deserved an honest answer. "Yes, I was a Ranger. A Captain for the last year of it. I would have signed on for longer, but then SHIELD came around, and made a more interesting offer." He'd enjoyed his time in the military, but honestly, SHIELD was a better fit for him, on many levels. "I notice you didn't say that you were Sayeret Matkal right off the bat, either." a guess, the unit might not even be called that in Safi's universe, but it seemed like a reasonable one.

"That was the way we looked at it." Phil agreed "But things change, and although I'll miss being in the field with them, it'll be nice to not need to be in the closet about my relationship with Clint." it was one of the supreme ironies of his life that he'd joined SHIELD in part to avoid the closet, only to spend so long hiding his relationship from public view.

"There is a Thai place around the corner I like." Phil offered "At least I think its Thai."

“How more interesting?” Safi nodded at the confirmation of Ranger status, even if he'd not been involved the legendary motto of ‘leave no man behind’ would have driven him to follow and recover.

Safi paused half a step then chuckled, “yes. Golem unit.” He glanced over wondering if the IDF on the agents world had the same designations, “Our answer to meta and magical terrorism events.”

“Closet? Because unit or because policy?” He (clearly) had zero issue with same sex, but not all governments or their agencies held the same standards.

Snorting Safi nodded, “The natives keep telling me that this place cannot poison me. But I am still suspicious of the food.”

"The threats, the hardware and the people that I would have a chance to work with were all the highest level" Phil replied "Not to mention that I'd grown up on stories about Captain America, and SHIELD, back in the wild and wooly days of the Howling Commandos and Peggy Carter during our version of the Second World War and afterwards. The opportunity to join that was a dream come true."

Phil smiled "I've had the opportunity to work with the IDF before." and recruited a couple of former IDF agents into SHIELD, for that matter "But in my universe, they don't have the need for a specialized unit to deal with enhanced humans or aliens. Magic is fairly low key, and mostly dealt with by specialized practitioners, in ways that don't effect the rest of us. Which makes me happy, because magic makes me unsettled." he paused for a moment and then added "Unless of course you count the alien tech that is sufficiently advanced to be indistinguishable from magic. Which also isn't my favorite thing."

"Because of the unit. One of the few rules that SHIELD has about fraternization is that you can't get involved with people under your command. Its not even a rule I disagree with, really. But keeping my unit together meant being in the closet. Otherwise I wouldn't have had to have been, which was one of the other things that attracted me to SHIELD."

"Some of it bothers me more than others." Phil said "This place at least serves food that I've also seen on my Earth."

Captain America.

Safi blew out a breath. Right. “You grew up on stories of him? What kinda stories?” He managed to resist the urge to rub his thumb over his eyebrow, and old stress tick he never managed to fully curb.

“No aliens. Just magic. Much magic and meta’s.” He'd heard rumors of possible incursions but nothing concrete by the time he'd left. “And some meta’s that enhance tech to the point of being near magic.” Safi didn't want to really think about adding aliens to that mix.

“Yes. As you can imagine as just a poor normal human, my experience with Magic has left me...not a fan.”

Safi let Phil lead the way, eyes habitually scanning, his posture made it clear he still considered this place potentially hostile ground.

"Just stories about him during World War II, he had quite the impressive record. And some of his early missions were with Peggy Carter, who was one of the founders of SHIELD." Phil said, not wanting to go on about the man's virtues when Safi didn't like him for some reason "Have you two met?" he asked, wondering what the story was there.

"It sounds like your meta's are a lot like our enhanced humans." Phil said "A lot of them have some really incredible powers. "And yes, I can understand why that would make you not a fan of magic. I'm not always a fan of enhanced humans myself, but given the scale of the threats Earth faces, sometimes we need them"

"I don't think its dangerous here." Phil said as they went inside and ordered at the counter.

“What kind of missions?” Was it weird that he hated the man with his face? Possibly but Safi wasn't going to delve too deeply into that. “You know in my world apparently you are comic books?” He snorted.

“SHIELD, Captain America. This makes interesting questions doesn't it?” Safi nodded. “Yes. There were attached magic users, they came on some missions, when the targets were...difficult to compete with pure human abilities.”

Safi just snorted, “Maybe. But I will keep my eyes open. How long you've been here than?”

"Really?" Phil asked, interested and, for some reason he couldn't explain, amused by the idea "I'd like to read some of those, I'm a big comic book fan. It makes sense, in a weird way." he continued, thoughtfully "You hear so many strange stories here in the Hub, it makes sense that someone would decide to make money selling another universe's newspapers. Or using them as the basis for comic books, anyway."

"I'm always glad to answer questions." Phil said "And yes, that sounds like my experiences with working alongside enhanced humans."

"I've been here a couple of weeks." Phil he continued, collecting a couple of bowls of noodles and leading Safi to a table "Its a facinating place."

“I never read them. Super hero comics are very niche. Too much on the news to get a kick out of it in fiction...or at least for most.” Safi shrugged with a small grin. “I will ask my roommate he apparently used to read them. Next time we are home I'll see if I can order some.”

He snorted, “Now I am curious if Batman, Wonder Woman are comics on your world.” Which...if they held any truth would be very interesting….

He noted the lack of response to his probe on ‘Captain America’ interesting. “Yes. It does seem to pull at the wanderlust in a man.” He shook his head, “if I didn't have a family I would be very tempted to spend a few months seeing where I could go.”

"The only super-hero comics in my universe are the Illustrated True Adventures ones, which, well, you can guess from the name of the company what they're about." Phil replied "Although sometimes they're so creative that they might as well be fiction." he gave a brief snort of laughter and explained "There was one that alleged a romantic relationship between two of the members of the Avengers which...just no. I don't think that Natasha would be interested in him. Anyway, they aren't in comics in my universe, but that doesn't mean that they don't show up somewhere. You should check them out, it might be a good present."

"I know what you mean." Phil replied "I need to find my people, and I need to get back home, but the temptation to spend a few months wandering around is tempting. I think that not-my-daughter may give into it, honestly." by way of explanation he added "I never had kids, but I recently met the adult daughter from a universe where Clint and I adopted. Its interesting, to see the road I could have taken. A little disturbing, at times."

“Disturbing.” He agreed lips flatting out, “how many worlds in how many incarnations? How much is on us for other versions actions?” Safi’s eyebrow rose “your not daughter sees her father, and you see a stranger. Disturbing for both.”

His eyes flicked around the restaurant professionally, a charming smile brightening his expression. “Hi! My friend says you've got the best food in the Bazaar.” He grinned boyishly at the woman waiting tables. “Can I put myself in your hands? Show me...what's tasty?” He drew out the word pulling a half blush and flick of her dish towel before leading the pair to a table.

Safi’s affable smile didn't die as they sat, flipping the chair to straddle it. “True action comics eh? Sounds like the kinda libel that would be people sued to hell and back back home.” Blue eyes twinkled with humor that had been hidden behind this brisk professional face.

"I don't think that any of us deserve credit or blame for what our other selves have done." Phil said "On the other hand, its a window into what we're capable of, or who we could have become, under slightly different circumstances. And yes, it is awkward for both Lori and I. Her, seeing a younger version of her father, and me...meeting someone who knows me that well who I hadn't met yet. And probably won't. It turns out that she's from a different universe from her fathers. They brought her back with them." he smiled and shook his head "sometimes thinking about it gives me a headache. When I"m talking to Lori, just knowing what tense to use gives me a headache."

Phil chuckled "They ruled that superheroes are public figures, so as long as they don't say something that is both untrue and likely to cause damage to someone's reputation, all we can really do is complain, unfortunately." Phil was slowly becoming more relaxed and friendly, although this time there was something subtly different than his earlier behavior in the range. "Although I wonder what kind of libels there might be in a universe where we're totally at the mercy of the people writing the comics. Probably all sorts of crazy and disturbing things"

A different woman, who looked enough like the first to be her sister (which, as it happened she was) brought them their drinks, smiling at both of them, although she did ask, with a mildly pointed tone, how Clint was doing. Phil's answer apparently allayed her worries, because she was all smiles as she brought out the food a moment later. "Meen is a little bit overprotective when it comes to Clint." Phil said with a wry smile as she walked away "They've become fast friends. Thai food is his favorite. Mostly because he's never been to Thailand."
