Phil wasn't the dedicated marksman that his boyfriend was, Clint spent several hours a day on the range, when he wasn't out in the field. But that didn't mean that Phil didn't put in a decent amount of time on the range, and since now was the "hurry up and wait" period that often happened before going in to unknown danger, it seemed like a good time to put in his bi-weekly range time.

When he arrived, Phil saw that he wasn't the only one on the range. Safi, the bearded, Israeli not-Steve who'd arrived a few days ago was on the other end, and a glance showed that he was very ably hitting his targets. Phil let himself watch for a moment, to take in the measure of the man, and get some idea of his skills. He hadn't gotten a chance to do much of either, although he'd heard that the man was paranoid, and very protective of the not-Stark he'd followed into The Hub.

As usual when he was observing someone there was nothing hostile about Phil's actions. He was a nice guy, there to engage in a bit of harmless target practice, slightly curious about the person he was sharing the range with, curiosity that involved interest in the breadth of the other man's shoulders and his shapely ass as much as they did the gun in his hands. The gun interested him more than the ass, truth be told, but it was the less confrontational reason for him to be observing an attractive stranger while he took his pistol from its case and loaded it.

After that, his attention was focused on his own target.

Chris was off visiting his sister who had apparently made herself very comfortable here which meant that they would be spending time here too, because while it wasn't Gotham didn't mean safi felt secure in letting Chris wander around alone.

Plus good goddamn if he'd ever felt the urge to explore this place fed it like no other.

Safi while physically similar to the Steve they had met was distinctly not identical; he was leaner, scared, and to someone with the eyes to see it favored his right side very slightly in the way that someone who had been injuries long ago badly did.

The gun in his hands was a standard sig, barely customized from the base model. There was a reason for that, it was the standard hand weapon of the Lexcorp security service, each member was discouraged from using their own personal weapons in favor for the standard.

Which was fine, but it required practice to make it natural for a man that had been using a different model his entire military career.

A new shooter stepped up to the lane next to him, Safi gave him half a glance verifying non hostile intent. Finishing out his clip Safi stepped back watching the other man service his targets.

Phil noted the stiffness, which, along with the fact that Safi was leaner told him that this was a man who had worked hard for his skills, not someone who had benefited from super-soldier serum. Which was something that he could respect. The man's bearing said ex-military, and not just the mandatory minimum that Israel expected from everyone. Which again, was something Phil could respect. He'd been an Army Ranger, in another lifetime, before he'd joined SHIELD. Not that it showed in his body language, but he'd been out for twenty years, and had put some effort into learning to not look dangerous.

His own pistol was a Colt 1911. The same one that he'd owned at the start of his career as a Army officer, and for the first bit of his time as a Ranger, as it happened. He'd bought it for his own use, when the issue weapon had changed to a Berretta. Which Phil still thought was a mistake, he didn't like abandoning things that worked just because they were old. He owned other pistols, but this one was an old friend, and as he turned his attention to his targets, it fit into his hand with the comfort of long practice.

Phil shot like he did everything else, with quiet, neat, practiced efficiency. Although a careful observer might note a little bit of flash in the fact that he'd gone for head shots, rather than the easier and more reliable center of mass targeting. And there was one target where he'd shot the arms, both right and left. Those were the shots he'd meant to make as well, not misses from attempts at torso shots. With those, like all of his targets, the groupings were nice and tight, even if he hadn't managed to duplicate Hawkeye and Natasha's favorite way of showing off, which was to put all their bullets in exactly, or almost exactly, the same hole. Or trying to do the Robin Hood thing, and split his own arrow, in Clint's case.

If he was honest Safi would admit to missing his Jericho, the ‘Baby Desert Eagle’ that had been developed specifically for the IDF special forces, he still had his old service pistol locked up at home.

His shots had been simple center mass shots, the only change had been on a single frame every shot had been a hand shots. The reason he'd kinda of loved this range was that they could project full body targets for him, which meant unlike paper, he could take shots against prone, partially concealed, or holding a hostage.

Also they had damn near every weapon able to be ‘rented’, flipping catches open; Safi lifted the SR -25 out of its case like the old friend it was. The owner of the range had promised him once he'd sighted down on it he could hold this specific gun for his use.

Safi didn't ask the how, he'd see if it held true. Right now though…

Safi has been the DM on his missions more often than not until he was in command of his own unit.

Sighting down took five minutes of carefully placed shot, checking the placement and adjusting. Once done…

Speed drills. That was the other reason he'd loved this place. 55 targets in various positions in three minutes.

He rarely missed.

Phil watched as the other man brought up a variety of targets, and, he had to admit, felt a little bit of a desire to compete. In addition to the fact that a variety of targets was better practice than he usually got.

He brought up the same set the other man had been using, and took care of his own targets with quiet efficiency. He wasn't quite as accurate as he'd been against paper, but that was only to be expected, and he didn't 'kill' any of the hostages, which was the important part.

Phil noticed that the not-Steve was trying out one of the range's pistols, which marked him as someone who needed to use a variety of weapons, which was interesting in and of itself. As was the fact that he was fast. Fast, even by the standards of someone who'd been working with Hawkeye and Black Widow for years.

Which meant that next set of drills Phil had to do were the ones for speed. He wasn't as fast as the other man, but his performance was still pretty respectable, and he had a little smile of satisfaction on his face as he started reloading his clips.

The truth was that if he did his job right Safi should never have to worry about keeping his long distance marksmanship skills developed. Practicing with the rifle had been a call back to an older life, one where he'd been part of a very unique team.

Before he finished the booth next to him started up the same programs, meaning that as he broke down the SR-15, he could watch the other man.

“This place is strange.” He opened with once he was clearly done, “in my world I would ask if US Army, but is possible in yours that the 1911 is not called that or is for different nation. Or perhaps there is no America.”

"This is a very strange place." Phil agreed with his best smile. The one he used for recruiting assets. "But to answer your questions, yes, its still called a Colt 1911, and there is an America. Although now I have to ask if, in your universe, the US military had the sense to not adopt the Beretta." he shrugged a bit self depriciatingly, "What can I say, when it comes to hardware, I'm a traditionalist." Phil continued, in the same friendly tone "Now, if I were guessing based on my own universe, I'd be asking you if you were ex-IDF, and who you were working as a bodyguard for."

Just because he'd turned down the Mossad's offer after he'd retired didn't mean he couldn't recognize the look and bearing of a Agent. Especially when they had just played The Who has the bigger gun game.

Raising his eyebrows Safi nodded once, “yes.” Wondering how similar their worlds where. “I would also guess...CIA?.” It was a near fit but something didn't quite match.

“I am a security specialist for Lexcorp headquarters.” He watched the other man curiously to see if he recognized the company.

Phil smiled a bit wider, it was always nice to know when your guesses were right. Which was not always true, when it was across universes, but apparently Safi's universe and his weren't all that different.

He shook his head "Close, but no. Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, as it happens." which didn't indicate anything about the man's universe, since even in his most people would guess FBI or CIA before they'd guess SHIELD.

"I can't say that I've heard of it, so it probably doesn't exist in my universe." Phil's eyes twinkled "In my universe, I'd have guessed Stark Enterprises, Tony Stark has a penchant for hiring attractive bodyguards."

“No Stark.” He shook his head, filing away that bit of data about the man who'd offered his home away from home.

“....your world likes to make pretty acronyms.” Was all he said about THAT cluster.

Attractive? Safi’s gaze deepened, while the man was not his type in a few ways he could always flirt for information. “Well-” he began, clicking his case shut. “Mr. Luthor believes in brains over beauty, but that one does not mean the exclusion of the other.” Safi smiled charmingly, now he remembered why he didn't take up the Mossad offer. He didn't like this type of cat and mouse play.

That how ever did not mean he was bad at it, he simply preferred not to have to lie with his body and eyes.

"They were pretty dedicated to making sure the initials spelled SHIELD." Phil admitted with a little laugh. Well, Fury had at least, and his list of rejected names was impressive. And amusing. Phil had seen it once, when they were both very drunk.

Phil noticed that the 'attractive' comment hadn't gone unnoticed, which was another difference between this man and Steve. Steve would either have been embarrassed, or it would have gone totally over his head. Not that he was really flirting, either for recreation or information. Normally Clint wouldn't have minded about either, but Safi looked too much like Steve for Phil to start. "Mr. Stark likes to have both in one package." Phil replied "Which is probably why he's always trying to recruit my boyfriend." establishing that he wasn't on the prowl, and that he had something in common with this man. In his experience, straight men, even ones who weren't homophobic, didn't flirt back when they thought a man was flirting with them. It was a bit cat and mouse, but Phil loved playing these games.

Safi inclined his head fractionally, acknowledging the quick bilateral confirmation of what they were. Or at least one aspect.

“And what is it that you shield?” He asked curious to the party line.

He didn't need to show off, stripping his pistol down and cleaning it while the spoke. It was something anyone could do with enough time in.

“You are permanently here?”

"We're a UN chartered organization that works to protect Earth from the threats posed by alien and enhanced human actors." Phil replied "Which means that we work closely with most major governments, although technically we're our own jurisdiction." It was a simple enough description, even if the US government was always trying to leverage SHIELD into being a arm of the US government.

As they spoke, Phil worked on cleaning his own pistol. Doing so was completely automatic at this point, and wasn't a bar to conversation. "I'm only here temporarily. I followed some of my people here, and some of them are still missing. Right now the plan is to try to locate them, then we'll all head home. Although I have to admit that the idea of staying here and exploring the multi-verse is tempting, at least in theory. What about yourself?"

Safi snorted: “a UN level agency?” He shook his head ruefully “how is that working? In my world each country has there own branch of Magic and Meta enforcement, everyone does it differently. Some are at the federal level the US has a branch of the NSA, others do it on the local police level. Most have at least one military unit for Israel it was based out of the counter terrorism.” Which he thought made perfect sense. After all when mages went crazy you needed a specialized team.

There would be no Gotham in Israel!

“Followed my roommate through the looking glass.” He snorted rolling his eyes. “Was looking for his sister. Found her now missing her boyfriend.”

"It works out pretty well." Phil replied "The threats are global, so the response needs to be as well. Each nation has their own laws and responses in my world as well, and SHIELD generally works with the locals, instead of stomping all over their jurisdiction. I may be biased, but I think we do a good job. At least its better than the alternative which is letting some countries handle things well, while other do so badly." picking up on the thread of what Safi implied about his world.

"He must be a special person to rate that kind of loyalty." Phil remarked, probing a little. It wouldn't be the first time that someone in a same-sex relationship had a 'roommate' or a 'close friend' after all."Was the boyfriend with her?" Phil asked, now curious. "Will you be going home after that?"

Safi crunches his nose in disagreement, “At least on my world there's no way you could get that kind of cooperation from the member states let alone the ones that refuse to join.” Considering the problems peacekeepers ran into…

“Your borders your problem is how it's mostly dealt with. Or Gotham would have probably been nuked from the air by now.”

Special? Safi didn't like that quick pry, sure he was from another universe but that didn't mean he couldn't be a threat. “He's a babbling bouncy PA that can't walk down the street with out getting broken ribs on top of getting mugged. Who is now spending time at an intergalactic whore house because his sister is tending bar there. No I'm not leaving him here alone.”

On the other hand finding Jim… “no he came to find her too we think. But he's got...issues.”

"Maybe that is a difference between your world and mine." Phil said "It isn't always easy, but it works pretty well. Or at least it works well enough to keep whole cities from falling into chaos. If I'm right in assuming what happened in Gotham.

Phil smiled a little at the description, now fairly sure that there was something between the PA and the other man. "What is his name? I've been to the Green Goddess a time or so myself, its a good place to collect information and meet people. Unless there are two inter-galactic brothels in this place." which was possible, but somehow seemed unlikely.

"Oh?" Phil asked curiously "What kind of issues?"

Safi grimaced, he didn't know the full history of that cursed city just- “Its been dying for decades. Only thing that's keeping it alive is stubborn people that keep trying to live there.” At least that was his opinion.

Safi narrowed his eyes, “why.” He asked bluntly, stance shifting automatically into something more balanced.

“Jim is dead. This creates issues.”

"I've seen a few places like that in my world." Phil admitted "Although not on the same scale. Its always unfortunate, when a place starts to fall apart."

It took everything in Phil's training and long experience not to shift his own stance, but he knew that getting into a dick measuring contest with someone who was this paranoid, and this determined to protect his person. "Because if he's as big of a magnet for trouble as you say, it might be a good idea for someone else to know who he is to keep an eye on him." Phil suggested "Besides, since we've met, he and I know someone in common, and I like meeting new people." everything in his tone and language relaxed, calm and not at all sounding like he was worried about a very dangerous man deciding he was a threat.

"I would imagine that would create issues. Although in my world, it would also cause problems in the dating department."

The very inoffensiveness of this man was getting his back up because he knew it was a lie. “In my world-” safi began “there are many men I have met like you. Many different governments. All have this-” he gestured to Phil. “Blankness. It is a skill. I respect that. It makes a man hard to judge and easy to underestimate-” THAT was who he reminded Safi of, the memory blooming behind his eyes “There was a Agent. Friendly. Nice. Kept his Op orders close to the chest. Our job was to get him in place, take out the target. He didn't tell us the target was a magical sickness spread by touch. He didn't mention when he was hit. We didn't see it coming when he ripped the throat out of my rook.” Safi sized Phil up and shook his head. “I don't trust spooks. Especially when they ask about civilians.”

Jim how ever was a ghost and could take care of himself. “Yes well, apparently they made it work.”
