No, it wasn’t going to be for good, but Jack wasn’t especially looking forward to getting to New York. Nothing about the city felt like home to the man who’d been raised in the west, so to him, New York was just as abroad as London, with just one exception. In London, the things that hid in shadows were just a hobby. In New York, they were his responsibility again. So, needless to say, Garnet Jack thought that there was no way this zeppelin ride was going to be anywhere near long enough.

He’d been in the ship’s casino ever since takeoff, and right now he was letting his winnings settle in his pocket. There had been one person who’d started sweating when he’d laid down a handful of garnets to change into chips and that would bear looking into, but right now he just wanted to enjoy the ride and not worry about silly things like a possible monster in disguise. It was too early in the day for anything to be feeding anyway.

He leaned against the bar near the door, smiling amiably at the newcomer who came through the door, tipping his hat slightly with one hand, that endearingly western accent thick on his tongue. “Well now, good evenin' there."

To be honest Ella at first did not note the man who greeted her - attention instead arrested by the view of London laid out before them, the great glass windows displaying her at her best, even if only from the height of 50 feet where the Zeppelin was still tethered.

The scarlet and silver of her uniform jacket firmly corseted to her slim frame was a strange juxtaposition with wide skirts that made up the rest of her costume. But than perhaps the army was to be excused; they had only allowed uniformed female officers for less than five years, so working out the kinks of the ‘non combat’ uniform was not yet completely set in stone.

The white borders of the pointed tails of her traditional ‘red coat’ blended into the silvery white of her skirt, a neat illusion of one garment, utterly impractical of course to maintain that much white fabric, but it had been adapted from the men's uniform and they wore equally impractical white trousers.

At least thankfully she was not required to wear her sword with the damn skirts at the moment, Full Mess Dress for her honestly felt like she was in some sort of play, cavalry sword poking out at odd angles with her skirts pushing at it.

“Forgive me.” she half turned at last acknowledging the greeting, teeth flashing in an almost apologetic smile - “I was arrested by the view.”

Jack leaned over to take a look out the window himself, nodding at the view of London. Cities hadn't ever really held much appeal for him, if he were honest. Oh, look, a mass of buildings, mud and smoke. All the same, even this view was more pleasant than it looked actually being in the city. "Almost looks peaceful from up here," he remarked, taking a sip of his whiskey. Just a few hours of daylight to kill before the tables were hot enough for his tastes again... well, the lady seemed at least to be pleasant enough and wasn't making some sniffing noise at him when she heard his accent. On the downside, she was uniformed, which put a lot of ideas in his head about rigidness of character and moral fortitude. All in all... well, he could do worse for company. He was a gambler, after all...

"Can't say I've ever seen that uniform on someone I could appreciate it on so much," he said with an ever-present teasing twinkle in his eye. In America, women in uniform would be... well, if he went with 'unthinkable' then someone would probably prove him wrong soon enough, but it definitely wasn't done now. "Buy you a drink? It's the least I can do for one of Her Majesty's who's going to have to be putting up with us Colonials now."

Ella’s expression stiffened slightly at the compliment; the focus on her profession and the newness of that public expression of it made her wary.

Odd wasn’t it? Women could be spy’s easily enough in a man’s mind (or at least men who were willing to see her sex as anything other than wives and mothers) but make it official that they risk their lives, give them the uniform and recognition they earned...and suddenly it wa wall too much.

Butttt Ella wouldn’t have the position she did if her skin was thin enough to be overly bothered by what was a fairly common reaction.

The stiff expression shifted smoothly into a polite inviting smile “I would appreciate that.” Came the clear soprano, “Have you flown before?” Polite conversation, hearts and minds Ella girl, you know the game.

For a minute, Jack wondered if she’d been shanghaied into serving like so many men he’d met who’d served in the Civil War (and the ensuing mess before it had fizzled). The only people in uniform he met who didn’t go on reciting their rank and regiment and whatnot were either people who weren’t voluntarily serving, or those who… well now, there was a thought. Yes, he thought it was nice that England was being all open and letting women show their worth (hence the comment), but maybe she was jumping across the pond because she wasn’t actually a soldier? Someone wearing a uniform they didn’t earn didn’t want that subject coming up under anything but their own circumstances, after all. The shoe didn’t quite fit in this case, but… well, it was something to keep in mind, now, wasn’t it?

After all, she had the ‘hide your feelings and pretend to be pleasant’ routine down, but that could either be from being a con or just from being British. Stiff upper lip, and all that, which he found made for a very interesting feel to the lips… But his mind was wandering.

“Well, I had the choice of taking a nice, smooth ride through the air to London or two weeks getting seasick and end up in Liverpool. I decided that I’d rather chance falling than drowning,” he said, giving the bar a gentle knock with his knuckles to get the bartender’s attention. “Whatever the lady wants. I’ll cover it.”

“That is Not exactly an answer.” There was a undercurrent of humor permeated her tone, inviting him to be charmed.

Settling her self on the bar a respectable half arms length from her new acquaintance Ella Held out a confident hand “Leftenant Ella Golding.” Direct eye contact and surety of self was projected with the introduction; Ella might be hiding truths, but this was not one of them, her rank and position were in fact genuine.

….how she came by them was a longer story.

“Headed home?” She asked by way of a conversation starter, at his offer Ella debated for a moment before ordering a ladylike raffia, sweet but it was safe enough to order.

“Well now, if I just settled on ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to everything, I wouldn’t be much of a conversationalist, now, would I?” Jack answered, smiling back.

The rank did visibly impress him (assuming she was telling the truth). There was, of course, the obvious fact of her gender that stood in her way, but that was only part of the story. “Well now, that’s mighty interesting,” he admitted. If she were a man, he’d just assume that her station at this young age could be due to a rich father who wanted an officer for a son. However, would a father make similar arrangements for a daughter? No, he really didn’t think so. More likely he’d want her to stay home and be a good girl. “An officer at your age? My hat’s off to you, ma’am. That sounds like quite a story right there.” A story that he pointedly didn’t request. He wasn’t a brute, after all, he had manners. “John Morgan,” he said, taking her hand and shaking it like he would any soldier he met. She didn’t strike him as the sort who would want to be fawned over as a lady, not if she’d worked against those sentiments –like he was assuming to get to where she was. “But most folk call me Jack, and I’d appreciate it if you were one of them.”

He finished his whiskey, then set it down on the counter for the bartender to refill. “No, just making an appearance in New York, and I pity the soul that calls that place home. I have to stop back in the country every so often to show my brother that I’m still alive, or he might get some fool idea like telling the bank that he’s empowered to act on my behalf again.” And that was, at least, partly true. Of course, he also needed to check back in with his superiors about any activity they needed him to watch, and such things were best not sent by post.

Traveling under uniform made her rank easily read on her shoulder placards - and also invited the disbelief and surprise he had expressed. Ella’s smile did not waver at the compliment or the implicit question. Truth told the only reason her official rank was such was that any higher and no one would believe it. Along with good old fashioned stuck in the mud old boys club that wouldn’t accept anything else.

That was also why the division pin on her jacket Breast held only a eight pointed star denoting ‘at large’ or ‘detached specialist’. Ella was a woman who for a large part controlled her own missions, and reported directly to a small set of superiors.

Which suited her just fine; she’d had her fill of taking senseless orders long ago.

“I have never been across this Ocean.” She admitted curious about his dislike of their destination “Really? I heard that New York was becoming rather civilized even with your war.”

Ella sipped delicately at her crystal stemmed glass, “Does your brother have the habit of attempting to gain access to your finances Jack?”

Rauri wiped at the grease on her hands one more time before she was content with their cleanliness, tucking the cloth behind a painting since she'd absolutely need it again later, and it was her ship after all. It was enough for her that she was going out of her way to make an appearance to the guests, a fact that her second in command has made certain of.

Call her crazy but Rauri's idea of comfortable did not include a starched and pressed uniform, hair pinned in a bun on the back of her head. Then again, it was quite possible she was crazy and frankly she wasn't entirely certain what the purpose of 'sanity' was.

The redhead adjusted the brim of her hat before opening the door to the casino she knew even now would have passengers milling about. At least it wasn't as formal as the dining cabin.

Smiling gracefully, Rauri glanced about the room. She had to choose which of the passengers to introduce herself to. She wanted to just order a drink and wait for them to come to her but that was "rude" and "absurd." So she just walked in the direction of the pair that looked most interesting.

Careful to walk within their range of view, rather than surprise them, she ducked her head in greeting. "Leftenant. Sir. Oi'-" Rauri forced back the grimace that came from trying to hold back her accent for these damned posh brits. "I'm Captain Breen. 'av ye-ou been enjoyin' te view?" She asked, gesturing at the window.

"I promise yeo, 'tis nathin' teo te sky over te ocean." She added before signalling a waiter for another round.

“Well, ma’am, that depends on how you take ‘civilized’ to mean,” he said. “If you mean that it’s a place where people with old money have put down roots, choked out anyone else that dreamed of reaching their lofty height, and keep a nice tight grip on things? Well, I’d have to say that you’re absolutely right.” He offered her a wry smile at his half-serious assertion. “Place I come from, we like the land to still have some life to it. Think of New York as a horse drawing a nice, comfortable carriage, and the towns out west as mustangs running free. I tend to like the latter, myself, but then I’ve been accused of being a sentimental fool sometimes. There’s still room for a man to make more of himself out there.”

He took a long drink of his whiskey as he considered the subject of his brother. “Let’s just say that if there was ever a will left by my father that named one of us over the other, I’m reasonably sure that none of our fortune would survive the aftermath.” Because really… Jack wasn’t about to leave that fortune to his gutless brother, and if Robert was out of the picture, well… Jack wasn’t ever one to manage the business. Thankfully, they’d gotten control of the fortune while their father was still alive, so his eventual (probably embarrassing) death wouldn’t have any effect on matters.

He tipped his hat to the woman that was obviously their captain and decided that he liked her. Coarse-looking, practical, obviously someone ready to make things work her own way than to stick to some sort of rules… she was much more his type of people than the Leftenant’s, he judged. He lifted his glass in a little mock salute at the unspoken offer of another round before finishing it off and setting it back on the counter. “Captain Breen, a pleasure, I assure you,” he said with that easy, almost-joking cowboy charm. Personally, he could do with seeing some plains and forests below them, but people didn’t take airships over land, now, did they?

Ella blinked once at his rather vehement renunciation of city living. “I’ve never seen a mustang.” she commented, “But I would love to see one.” her lips quirked “I’m actually headed over land to San Francisco, so I might have the chance to see that unbridled wilderness you mean.” Ella’s attention was than arrested by a dashing captain. “Captain-” Ella half rose in respect holding out her hand for the other woman. “A wonderful marvel of a ship you have here, you must be very proud of her.”

Ella’s hands herself were delicately manicured but they too were callused if cleaner than the captains. “I am very much looking forward to the day when this sort of transport in the standard.”

Rauri shared a look with the woman who shook her hand, feeling the calluses they shared, and the ones they didn't. She had met plenty of rippers in her day- and it was easy to know that the leftenant had earned her rank. Even a fleeting grip was plenty to identify the roughened patches of skin where the hilt of a sword would rest.

With that in mind, Rauri kept the touch as short as was respectable, knowing all too well that her own calluses told a story easily read by those with the reference needed to do so. Along with a few sliced scars that Rauri tended to explain away as slips while attempting to repair things. It was an easy enough lie to believe for most people- either she was dressed in captain's garb and they didn't believe she had the dexterity to avoid damage, or she was dressed in her beat up clothes and they knew she worked with her hands enough to have those scars.

But when you could read the calluses, Rauri knew they could be a flashing sign of someone who was proficient in small blades.

Smiling at the pair, she acknowledged their replies. "Ah. Aye, pure much so. Drew 'er up myself. Ta." Rauri offered, a hand reaching out to brush the walls of the ship affectionately. It was her invention, her baby. "I look forward te it also. Though I canny imagine any 'ill match up te dis auld lassy." Rauri offered with a grin that came from someone acknowledging the beauty of her ship.

"Nigh, may I ask yisser names? I'm afraid I don't know our boardin' list as well as me second does."

“Well, you’ll get to see something, that’s for sure. I don’t know how wild I’d call all the land the railroad bought up, but definitely a far cry from New York,” he allowed. “What brings one of His Majesty’s to San Francisco?”

There was something about the captain, something that made Jack’s skin tingle. Not the same as it would if he were around something malevolent, but there was definitely more to her than just a simple (ha!) captain of the ship. He sipped his whiskey while the ladies made small talk, idly wondering if their dear captain had served time as a less-than-approved-of privateer, but he wasn’t so tactless as to ask. His own hands were (irritatingly) much smoother than hers, with callouses that told her that he more than infrequently had need to use a revolver, scarred knuckles that spoke to the occasional unarmed dust-up, and wear at his fingers that spoke to him often having more (or just different) rings than the one garnet ring he was currently wearing.

“Jack Morgan, ma’am. Just another poor expatriate heading back to have Uncle Sam tell him to go away again,” he joked. Well, half-joked. It wasn’t like his superiors weren’t happy to have him somewhere that was most definitely not close to them. “Don’t suppose you could be persuaded to have something blow us off course to somewhere more interesting,” he joked, “I really could do without my appointments.”

The captain it seemed earned her stripes the hard way.

Elle’s eyes narrowed slightly, searching her counterparts for...something, what ever it was she did not find it, letting the handshake break as quickly as the captain desired. “So you are also an accomplished engineer.” Ella’s eyes remained thoughtful even as she gave the compliment with a light smile.

“Oh im so sorry-” Ella did not offer her hand again simply inclining her head “Ella Golding, Lieutenant in her Majesty's Reconnaissance Forces.” perhaps also answering some of Jacks curiosity about her final destination or perhaps simply adding to it.

“I’m not sure I would like to know what would fit your taste for more interseting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Jack.” she teased.
